    Heart Sutra

The Blessed Mother, the Heart o the Perection o Wisdom

    Bhagavati Prajna Paramita Hridaya

bCom ldan das ma shes rab kyi pha rol tu phyin pai snying po

Homage to unutterable, inconceivable, inexpressible Perect Wisdom,

    Unborn, unceasing essence o space,

    The eld o sel-aware gnosis,

Mother o past, present and uture Buddhas!

Homage to the perection o wisdom, the Blessed Mother.

    Thus I have heard once:

The Blessed One was staying in Rajgriha at Vulture Peak along with a great com-

munity o monks and a great community o bodhisattvas, and at that time, the

Blessed One entered the meditative absorption on the varieties o phenomena

called the appearance o the proound. At that time as well, the noble Avalok-

iteshvara, the bodhisattva, the great being, clearly beheld the practice o the pro-

ound perection o wisdom itsel and saw that even the ve aggregates are empty

    o intrinsic existence.

Thereupon, through the Buddhas inspiration, the venerable Shariputra spoke

to the noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva, the great being, and said, How

should any noble son or noble daughter who wishes to engage in the practice o

the proound perection o wisdom train?

When this had been said, the holy Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva, the great

being, spoke to the venerable Shariputra and said, Shariputra, any noble son or

noble daughter who so wishes to engage in the practice o the proound perec-

tion o wisdom should clearly see this way: they should see perectly that even

the ve aggregates are empty o intrinsic existence. Form is empty, emptiness is

orm; emptiness is not other than orm, orm too is not other than emptiness.

Likewise, eelings, perceptions, mental ormations, and consciousness are all

empty. Thereore, Shariputra, all phenomena are empty; they are without den-

ing characteristics; they are not born, they do not cease; they are not deled, they

are not undeled; they are not decient, and they are not complete.

Thereore, Shariputra, in emptiness there is no orm, no eelings, no perceptions,

no mental ormations, and no consciousness. There is no eye, no ear, no nose,

no tongue, no body, and no mind. There is no orm, no sound, no smell, no

taste, no texture, and no mental objects. There is no eye-element and so on up

to no mind-element including up to no element o mental consciousness. There

is no ignorance, there is no extinction o ignorance, and so on up to no aging

and death and no extinction o aging and death. Likewise, there is no suering,

    6 7

  • 7/30/2019 HHDL_program07

    5/25

origin, cessation, or path; there is no wisdom, no attainment, and even no non-

    attainment.

Thereore, Shariputra, since bodhisattvas have no attainments, they rely on this

perection o wisdom and abide in it. Having no obscuration in their minds, they

have no ear, and by going utterly beyond error, they will reach the end o nirvana.

All the buddhas too who abide in the three times attained the ull awakening

o unexcelled, perect enlightenment by relying on this proound perection o

    wisdom.

Thereore, one should know that the mantra o the perection o wisdomthe

mantra o great knowledge, the unexcelled mantra, the mantra equal to the un-

equalled, the mantra that quells all sueringis true because it is not deceptive.

The mantra o the perection o wisdom is proclaimed:

tadyatha gat gat paragat parasamgat bodhi svaha!

Shariputra, the bodhisattvas, the great beings, should train in the perection o

    wisdom in this way.

Thereupon, the Blessed One arose rom that meditative absorption and com-

mended the holy Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva, the great being, saying this is

excellent. Excellent! Excellent! O noble child, it is just so; it should be just so.

One must practice the proound perection o wisdom just as you have revealed.

For then even the tathagatas will rejoice.

As the Blessed One uttered these words, the venerable Shariputra, the holy

Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva, the great being, along with the entire assembly,

including the worlds o gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, all rejoiced and

hailed what the Blessed One had said.

    Refuge and generation of bodhicitta

I go or reuge, until I am Enlightened, to

the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Highest

    Assembly.

From the virtuous merit that I collect by

    listening to the Dharma,

May I attain the state o Buddha to be able to

benet all sentient beings. (3 times)

    Generation of bodhicitta

With a wish to ree all beings

I shall always go or reuge

To the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha,

    Until I reach ull enlightenment.

    Enthused by wisdom and compassion,

    Today in the Buddhas presence

I generate the Mind or Full Awakening

For the benet o all sentient beings.

    As long as space remains,

As long as sentient beings remain,

Until then, may I too remain

And dispel the miseries o the world.

Long life prayer for H.H. the Dalai Lama

In this Pure Land surrounded by snowy

    mountains

You are the source o all benet and happi-

    ness without exception

    All-powerul Avalokiteshvara, Tenzin

    Gyatso

May you remain rm or a hundred eons.

    Dedication prayers

By these virtues may I quickly

Realize the state o a guru Buddha

And having done so may I place

Every last being into that state.

The mind o enlightenment is supreme and

    most precious

Where it has not arisen, may it ariseWhere it has arisen, without any decline,

May it only grow stronger and stronger.

May the teachings, the source o all happi-

    ness, increase and propagate

May all those beings who uphold the doc-

    trine be healthy

May the tachings o the Buddha, the source

o happiness or all embodied creatures

    Forever fourish.

dedicate this and all my virtues.

All the Conquerors who come in the

three times greatly praise any dedication

o merit, and so I will dedicate all these

roots o virtue or the sake o practicing

    as did Samantabhadra.

    It helps to recognize all teachings to be ree o contradictions;

    It helps the dawning o all scriptures as pith instructions;

    It helps to nd easily the enlightened intention o the conquerors;

It helps also to guard against the abyss o grave negative deeds.

Thereore this most excellent instruction that is sought ater

By numerous ortunate ones like the learned ones o India and Tibet,

This [instruction o the] stages o the path o persons o three capacities,

What intelligent person is there whose mind is not captured by it?

This concise instruction distilling the essence o all scriptures,

Even through reciting it or listening to it only once,

The benets o teaching the dharma, listening to it, and so on,

Since such waves o merit are bound to be gathered contemplate its meaning.

Then, the root o creating well the auspicious conditions

For all the excellences o this and uture lives

Is to rely properly with eort both in thought and action

Upon the sublime spiritual mentor who reveals the path.

Seeing this we should never orsake him even at the cost o lie

And please him with the oering o implementing his words.

    I, a yogi, have practiced in this manner;

You, who aspire or liberation, too should do likewise.

    This lie o leisure is even more precious than a wish-granting jewel;

    That I have ound such an existence is only this once;

    So hard to nd yet like a fash o lightning it is easy to vanish;

Contemplating this situation its vital to realize that all mundane pursuits

    There is no certainty that ater death we may not be born in the lower realms;

The protection rom such terror lies in the Three Jewels alone; So we must make rm the practice o going or reuge

This in turn depends on contemplating well the white and black karma

And their eects, and on perect observance o the ethical norms.

In a mere one-pointed concentration I ail to see

    The potency to cut the root o cyclic existence;

Yet with wisdom devoid o the path o tranquil abiding,

No matter how much one may probe, the afictions will not be overcome.

So this wisdom decisively penetrating the true mode o being,

    The learned ones saddle it astride the horse o unwavering calm abiding;

And with the sharp weapon o reasoning o the Middle Way ree o extremes,

    They dismantle all locus o objectication o the mind grasping at extremes;

With such expansive wisdom that probes with precision,

Let alone that through one-pointed cultivation absorption is realized,

Treasure o Holy Wisdom, (Manjushri,) I bow at your eet.

For one o slight eort to gather the magnicent collections,

Rejoicing in virtue is taught as supreme.

Especially, toward virtues created in the past by onesel,

I one generates great joy devoid o pride,

Virtues created in the past will increase.

In order to accomplish that goal taught by the Conqueror and

As many urther purposes are seen,

It is excellent O mind i you generate joy in that way!

First o all, I sought vast and extensive learning,

In the middle, all the scriptural traditions arose as practical advice,

At the end, I practiced all day and night

And dedicated all in order or the teachings to spread.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

I the totally conusing darkness about points to be accepted and rejected

Is undispelled by the lamp o perect learning,

The path is unknown then, what need is there to mention

Entry into the city o liberation?

Because o this very act, not satised by a partial and rough training

In the treatises o the Invincible Lord o Dharma (Maitreya) and

The world renowned Six Ornaments and Two Supremes,

I trained in them all in detail.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

In particular, or one who sees this side (ordinary beings)

The one door o determining the actual reality o things

Is the treatises on perect reasoning in their dicult points

I trained repeatedly with much eort.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

Although I worked with much hardship on the treatises o sutra and tantra,

When practicing and expounding the meaning o the proound,

Having seen that I had not gone ar beyond the kind o view

That has trained in nothing and knows nothing at all

Through the path o subtle reasoning analyzing the proound,

Especially o the scriptural tradition o Nagarjuna,

In all the essential points that bring about right view,

I properly trained and cut o doubts.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

Here, in progressing to complete Buddhahood,

The proound Vajra Vehicle and the Perection Vehicle

Are the two varieties Secret Mantra, versus the Perections,

Is said to be vastly superior,

Everywhere renown as like sun (versus) moon.

Accepting those words as statements o truth,

I those holding the burden o mastery do not search about

What the proound vehicle is like,

And i such as these are moreover intelligent,

How could anyone else be o dull aculties?

Alas! That the very dicult to meet, unexcelled path

Like this be cast away without care is amazing.

Because o just that, the Conquerors supreme vehicle,

The vajra vehicle more rare than the Buddhas,

The proound treasure o the two siddhis,

I entered and trained in or a long time with much eort.

I amiliarized at length with the general and particular

Tantric sets o the three amilies o Action Tantra,

Such as Samanya-guhya-tantra (Secret General Tantra), Susidhi

Then, to the best at removing the darkness o the minds o the disciples

I made requests to Manjugosha with intense and enduring

Firm aith, in order that the scriptural traditions appear

As practical instructions, and I strove in the collection o causes.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

By striving in that way, in the stages o the path to enlightenment

O the successive lineages rom Nagarjuna and Asanaga,

I ound an uncommon certainty. Thereby,

The supreme scriptures o the proound and the perections arose as

    practical instructions.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

In this Northern direction, many trained and untrained

In the scriptural traditions o Pramana, have said in one voice

That there exist no stages o practice to progress to enlightenment in

The sutra (Dignagas Pramana-samucchaya ) and (Dharmakirtis) seven sets

    (o treatises on Pramana).

    However, Manjugosha said to Dignaga

Directly, Compose this (text on Pramana) in the uture period it

Will become an eye to all migrators, thus

Granting verbal permission, making it authentic.

I saw that the (assertion o others) is the worst o illogical statements and

Especially when examining into the method,

The meaning o the expression o worship o the Pramanasamucchaya,

Establishing validity by the orward and reverse orders

In the Bhagavan being established as valid

For those striving or emancipation and, through that,

His teachings alone being the crossing path or those seeking liberation,

I ound deep certainty. Hence, since integration, through the path o reasoning,

O all essential points o the paths o the two vehicles

Became well evident, I ound a special joy.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

You are very kind, O Treasure o Holy Wisdom.

Then, I made appropriate strong eort to join well

The two, the Bodhisattvabhumi and the Sutra-alamkara and thereby

The scriptures o the Invincible Lord o Dharma (Maitreya) and all

The scriptures o his ollowers appeared as special instructions o practice.

Having thought about this, my goal has been good,

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, is the head

o state and spiritual leader o the Tibetan people. He was born

Lhamo Dhondrub on July 6, 1935, in a small village called Takt-

ser in northeastern Tibet. Born to a peasant amily, His Holiness

was recognized at the age o two, in accordance with Tibetan

tradition, as the reincarnation o his predecessor the 13th Da-

lai Lama. The Dalai Lamas are incarnations o Avalokitesvara,

the Buddha o Compassion. As maniestations o the Bodhisattva (Buddha) o

Compassion, the Dalai Lamas choose to reincarnate in order to serve mankind.

Tibetans normally reer to His Holiness as Yeshe Norbu, the Wishullling Gem

    or simply Kundun The Presence.

The present Dalai Lama was enthroned on February 22, 1940 in Lhasa, the capital

o Tibet. At that time Lhamo Dhondrub was renamed Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang

Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Compassionate, De-

ender o the Faith, Ocean o Wisdom.

    Education in Tibet

His Holiness began his education at the age o six and completed the Geshe

Lharampa Degree (Doctorate o Buddhist Philosophy) in 1959; His Holiness was

25 years old. The year beore he took the preliminary examinations at each o the

three monastic universities: Drepung, Sera and Ganden. The nal examination

was conducted in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa during the annual Monlam Festi-

val o Prayer, held every year in the rst month o the Tibetan calendar.

    Leadership Responsibilities

On November 17, 1950, His Holiness was called upon to assume ull political

power (head o the State and Government) ater some 80,000 Peoples Liberation

Army soldiers invaded Eastern Tibet. In 1954, he went to Beijing to talk peace

with Mao Tse-tung and other Chinese leaders, including Chou En-lai and Deng

Xiaoping. In 1956, while visiting India to attend the 2500th Buddha Jayanti Anni-

versary, he had a series o meetings with Prime Minister Nehru and Premier Chou

    about deteriorating conditions in Tibet.

His eorts to bring about a peaceul solution to Sino-Tibetan confict were

thwarted by Bejings ruthless policy in Eastern Tibet, which ignited a popular

uprising and resistance. This resistance movement spread to other parts o the

country. On March 10, 1959 Lhasa, the capital o Tibet, exploded with the largest

demonstration in Tibetan history, calling on China to leave Tibet and rearming

Tibets independence. The Tibetan National Uprising was brutally crushed by the

Chinese army. His Holiness escaped to India where he was given political asylum.

Some 80,000 Tibetan reugees ollowed His Holiness into exile. Today, there are

BiograpHyof His HolinesstHe Dalai lama more than 120,000 Tibetans in exile. Since 1960, he has resided in Dharamsala,India, known as Little Lhasa, the seat o the Tibetan Government-in-exile.

In the early years o exile, His Holiness appealed to the United Nations on the

question o Tibet, resulting in three resolutions adopted by the General Assembly

in 1959, 1961, and 1965, calling on China to respect the human rights o Tibet-

ans and their desire or sel-determination. With the newly constituted Tibetan

Government-in-exile, His Holiness saw that his immediate and urgent task was

to save both the Tibetan exiles and the unique Tibetan culture. As Tibetan reu-

gees were relocated to agricultural settlements in India, economic development

was encouraged. His Holiness also created a Tibetan educational system so that

reugee children be raised with ull knowledge o their language, history, religion

and culture. In addition, the Tibetan Institute o Perorming Arts was established

in 1959, and the Central Institute o Higher Tibetan Studies became a university

or Tibetans in India. Over 200 monasteries have been re-established to preserve

the vast corpus o Tibetan Buddhist teachings, the essence o the Tibetan wayo lie.

In Washington, D.C., at the Congressional Human Rights Caucus in 1987, His

Holiness proposed a Five-Point Peace Plan as a rst step toward resolving the

uture status o Tibet. This plan calls or the designation o Tibet as a zone o

peace, an end to the massive transer o ethnic Chinese into Tibet, restoration o

undamental human rights and democratic reedoms, and the abandonment o

Chinas use o Tibet or nuclear weapons production and the dumping o nuclear

waste, as well as urging earnest negotiations on the uture o Tibet.

In Strasbourg, France, on June 15, 1988, the Dalai Lama urther elaborated on

the Five-Point Peace Plan and proposed the creation o a sel-governing demo-

cratic Tibet, in association with the Peoples Republic o China. However, on

September 2, 1991, the Tibetan Government-in-exile declared the Strasbourg Pro-

posal invalid because o the closed and negative attitude o the present Chinese

leadership towards the ideas expressed in the proposal.

    Recognition and Awards

Since his rst visit to the west in early 1973, a number o western universities and

institutions have conerred Peace Awards and honorary Doctorate degrees in rec-

ognition o His Holiness distinguished writings in Buddhist philosophy and or

his leadership in the solution o international conficts, human rights issues and

global environmental problems. In presenting the Raoul Wallenberg Congres-

sional Human Rights Award in 1989, U.S. Congressman Tom Lantos said, His

Holiness the Dalai Lamas courageous struggle has distinguished him as a lead-

ing proponent o human rights and world peace. His ongoing eorts to end the

suering o the Tibetan people through peaceul negotiations and reconciliation

have required enormous courage and sacrice.

    The 1989 Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committees decision to award the 1989 Peace Prize to His

Holiness the Dalai Lama won worldwide praise and applause, with exception o

China. The Committees citation read, The Committee wants to emphasize the

act that the Dalai Lama in his struggle or the liberation o Tibet consistently has

opposed the use o violence. He has instead advocated peaceul solutions based

upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural

    heritage o his people.

On December 10, 1989, as His Holiness accepted the prize he said, The prize

rearms our conviction that with truth, courage and determination as our weap-

ons, Tibet will be liberated. Our struggle must remain nonviolent and ree o

    hatred.

    Visits to Madison, Wisconsin

Madison, Wisconsin and the Deer Park Buddhist Center have been ortunate to

serve as host to His Holiness on several o his visits to the West. His Holinesss

rst visit to the United States in 1979 was also his rst visit to Madison. In His

Holinesss rst visit he taught at the St. Benedict Center. In 1981, His Holiness

oered the Kalachakra Initiation at the newly established Deer Park Center in

Oregon, Wisconsin. This was the rst time the Kalachakra Initiation had been

bestowed in the West. In 1989, the Dalai Lamas third visit to Madison, His Holi-

ness gave teachings at the Masonic Temple in downtown Madison and conse-

crated the Kalachakra Stupa at Deer Park Buddhist Center. His Holiness returned

to Madison in 1998 where he gave teachings at the Dane County Expo Center and

received an Honorary Degree rom the University o WisconsinMadison. His

Holinesss last visit to the area was in 2001. At that time he met with a group o

neuroscientists researching the eects o meditation on brain unction, emotions

    and physical health.

    A Simple Buddhist Monk

His Holiness oten says, I am just a simple Buddhist monk no more, nor

less. His Holiness ollows the lie o Buddhist monk. Living in a small cottage in

Dharamsala, he rises at 4 a.m. to meditate; then pursues an ongoing schedule o

administrative meetings, private audiences and religious teachings and ceremo-

nies. He concludes each day with urther prayer beore retiring. In explaining his

greatest sources o inspiration, he oten cites a avorite verse, ound in the writ-ings o the renowned eighth century Buddhist saint Shantideva:

For as long as space endures

And or as long as living beings remain,

Until then may I too abide

To dispel the misery o the world.

Geshe Sopa is recognized worldwide as one o thegreat living spiritual masters o the Tibetan Buddhisttradition. He is particularly renowned or maintain-ing the high standards o scholarly learning whilepersonally embodying the qualities o humility, toler-ance and compassion.

Though trained in his youth in one o the most rigorous Buddhist monasteries inTibet, Geshe Sopas lie work has been centered in the heartland o America. Asa Buddhist monk, a university proessor, a committed peacemaker, a consummateteacher and an extraordinary human being, Geshe Sopa has spent orty yearsinspiring all those he meets.

Geshe Sopas abilities were apparent rom a very early age in Tibet, leading him

to be selected as one o the scholars to personally test His Holiness the DalaiLama at his nal examinations even beore Geshe Sopa had completed his ownexaminations.

Just two years ater many Tibetans were orced into exile by the communist Chi-nese invasion o Tibet in 1959, His Holiness the Dalai Lama asked Geshe Sopato travel to the United States, giving him his lielong mission o bridging culturesand sharing the Dalai Lamas vision o global human values and ethics.

Geshe Sopa was the rst Tibetan to be tenured in an American university, andwent on to teach Buddhist philosophy, language and culture at the University oWisconsinMadison or 30 years. During that time, Geshe Sopa trained manyo this countrys rst generation o respected Buddhist scholars and translators, including Jerey Hopkins, Jos Cabezn and John Makransky.

Geshe Sopa ounded Deer Park Buddhist Center in 1975, ater students beganrequesting instruction outside the ormal academic setting. Today, Deer Parkremains a ull-scale monastic and teaching center upholding the Dalai Lamastradition in the Midwest, attracting students rom around the world to its annualprograms. He has acilitated an ongoing relationship between His Holiness theDalai Lama and the University o WisconsinMadison, which His Holiness hasvisited ve times, and rom which he has received an honorary doctoral degree. As a trustee on the international committee or the Peace Council, Geshe Sopahas traveled to Belast, Jer usalem and Chiapas to work toward ending the violencein those troubled areas, refecting his heartelt commitment both to public serviceand to non-violence .

For generations o students, Geshe Sopa has been a shining example o the hu-man capacity or developing kindness and wisdom. With his international sup-port, a solid tradition behind him and his own personal qualities, he has been theguiding orce behind the Deer Park Buddhist Center and Monastery, and has beeninstrumental in planting the roots o Tibetan Buddhism in the United States.

    DeerparkBuDDHistcenter

A jewel in the heartland o America, where Tibetan Buddhisms unique contri-

bution to human culture, art, and spiritual development prospers.

Deer Park Buddhist Center and Monastery was ounded in 1975 by Geshe

Lhundub Sopa. The center is devoted to ensuring that Tibetan Buddhist teach-

ings and the monastic way o lie, as well as Tibetan culture, remain available as

a vibrant part o our common human legacy.

Located just ten miles south o Madison, Deer Park Buddhist Center is a unique

landmark o Tibetan Buddhist culture in Americas heartland. Nestled in thirteen

acres o gentle hills, woodland gardens and a grove o century-old oak trees, the

site is eminently conducive to contemplative practice.

Deer Park has proound historic and sacred signicance as the site o the rst

Kalachraka ceremony or world peace ever perormed by His Holiness the Dalai

Lama in the West. The centers current temple was built in 1981 as a temporary

open-air pavilion or the Kalachraka initiation, and was later enclosed to serve as

the main temple. The stupa, a monument representing the state o enlighten-

ment, was erected in 1988, and blessed by His Holiness in 1989. It serves as a

meditative ocal point or visitors and residents alike. A new temple is now under

construction to meet the needs o the growing community and to preserve Geshe

    Sopas legacy.

The center oers a diverse r ange o oerings, including: education and monastic

training, inter-religious dialogues, group spiritual practice, community outreach,

and a variety o Tibetan cultural programs.

Weekly classes, bi-weekly worship ceremonies and numerous group meditation

retreats are oered regularly at the center (visit deerparkcenter.org or more inor-

mation). Large scale special religious events and Tibetan holidays attract hun-

dreds o students, scholars and lay people rom around the world.

tHe temple projectatDeerparkDeer Parks current acilities are too small to serve the expanding base o in-terested students and the growing Tibetan reugee community in the Midwest.

Construction o the new temple began in April 2005, and is anticipated to be

completed in 2008. Geshe Sopa dreamed o building an enduring structure to

    serve uture generations.

The new temple has been designed to support Tibetan Buddhist spiritual prac-

tices and teachings, as well as the cultural lie o the Tibetan community in exile.

The building will blend Tibetan architectural principles with modern, sustainable

design. The temples designers have worked hard to ensure a balance o tradition,

beauty and durability in the materials and methods chosen to develop the temple.

This also refects Deer Parks commitment to maintaining a respectul balance

    with the natural environment.

From the ront door to the rootop ornaments, each aspect o the temple project

has a symbolic signicance, allowing visitors to encounter the Buddhas teach-

ings in a powerul visual orm. The decorative interior and exterior woodwork

integrate Buddhist symbols such as lotus fowers, wish-granting jewels, the eight

auspicious signs, vajra or diamond scepters, mythical crocodiles, the ve colors

(indicating the ve aggregates, the ve types o wisdom, and ve Buddha ami-

lies, etc) and many other stylized symbols o higher meaning.

The design o the new temple is spiritually inspiring and visually striking. The

centerpiece o the building will be a two-story assembly hall which will house a

15 oot statue o Shakyamuni Buddha among other traditional statuary, Tibetan

paintings, cultural artiacts, and ritual elements.

The acility will provide classroom space or studies in Tibetan language and cul-

ture, and a library or Deer Parks extensive collection o sacred literature including

the Buddhist canon in Tibetan, videos and recorded teachings. Exterior patios and

gardens will enhance the ambience, while quietly blending into rural Oregons

    natural setting.

The temple project also includes plans to renovate and restore the stupa monu-

ment and preserve the original temple as a sacred and historic space.

The Tibetan Art Projects (TAP) o Deer Parks new temple will ensure the con-

tinuance o a 1,000-year Himalayan ar tistic tradition by incorporating traditional

Tibetan arts elements in the architectural details, including highly detailed, tradi-

tional ornamental painting, woodwork, sculpture, and metalwork.

The Tibetan Art Projects are a true confuence o spirituality and art, traditional

cratsmanship and leading edge technology, East and West, Tibetan and Ameri-

can, ancient and contemporary. The TAP projects include works o art created

with traditional materials and processes as well as traditional designs abricated

in contemporary materials. There will be sculpture in wood, clay and hand ham-

mered copper relie where appropriate, but there will also be durable ber-rein-

orced plastic casting or certain exterior ornamentation. The traditional wooden

beam-ends ormed rom bundles o pema sticks are replicated in cast stone and

    pre-cast concrete.

A Tibetan consultant guided Tibetan and Indian a rtists in South India in crating

the rootop sculpture made out o contemporary materials and the hand ham-

mered copper medallions. Tibetan artisans will work on site to crat interior and

exterior woodwork and paintings, with assistance rom local artists. The Tibetan

Art Projects will ornament Deer Parks new temple to create a truly unique land-

mark o Tibetan Buddhist culture in the heartland o America.

Geshe Sopa recalls, When a community in Tibet needed a center or its spir-

itual and cultural activities, people came to give their labor, and constructed the

building together with the monks, using ancient methods amiliar to all involved.

In that context, active undraising was not the principal way. Support rom the

community was oered out o a deep appreciation or the value o the Buddhas

teachings and a rm aith in the principles o karma, which teaches that those

    who givealso receive.
