F rom t he D esk of t he E dit or ..........-Dear Readers,
With malice towards none, with love for all, let
us dedicate ourselves to the promotion and
propagation of Naturopathy, Nature Cure,
Natural Hygiene, Naturism & Natural Living. The Art and
Science of Naturopathy is easy, simple, non-invasive, non-
currupt, affordable, without side effects, God given, without
controversy, acceptable to all, taking full charge of mind, body
and spirit, non-violent, in line with Indian way of life and
philosophy basic, permanent, suitable to each and every
individual and educating the patient to be healthy and to
remain healthy.
We are reminded of president Kennedy of America who once
said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what
you can do for your country.” Likewise, let us not ask whatthe government and other agencies can do for the promotion
and propagation of Naturopathy. Let us ask ourselves what
we can do about it.
Again we are reminded of Swami Vivekandji who said,
“Awake, arise and stop not till thy goal is reached.” Our goal
is to bring rightful position of 95% for Naturopathy in the field
of keeping people healthy and without any physical, mental,
social, emotional and spiritual sickness. As long as this goal
is not achieved, we must continue to strive.
Let us dedicate ourselves to the fulfilment of the dream of
the Father of Our Nation - Mahatmaji about Naturopathy.
With divine love...
Naturally yours,BIPIN PAREKH(Mob.: 98332 05550)

Loving yourself opens the door & being willing to change really helps.
Be sensitive to the ways in which each individual handles emotional & physical pain. There is no right or wrong way.
During the last 4 years, U.S.A.’s FDA (Food and Drug Ad-ministration) has done research on Lariam, which is used in
various medicines such as Lariago in cases of malaria—in
our country as also internationally. U.S.A. has used it for its
Peace Corps Volunteers and soldiers of army in Vietnam and
other places. However, a recent report(TOI, May 24, ’02) says,
“A raging controversy in the U.S. links the drug to severe
psychological problems and even suicide attempts. … This
has led to the filing of more than a dozen lawsuits against
Hoffmann-LaRoche, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant which
introduced the drug.” The drug has been prescribed to over
22 million people worldwide. Several Indian pharmaceutical
companies manufacture this antimalarial drug, which is avail-
able without prescription. The Indian Drug Review (Oct. 2001)
lists its side effects, namely, nausea, dizziness, and even
severe neuropsychiatric disorders such as suicidal attitudes.
Dr. V.P. ASTHANA, Head of the Clinical and Experimental
Medicine Division of the Central Drug and Research Insti-
tute, has cautioned against its indiscriminate use.
In medical pharmacology, history repeats itself all the time.
Yesteryears’ wonder drug or life-saving capsule or epidemic-
preventive vaccine somehow loses its efficacy in curing or pre-
venting an ailment in the current year. For his discovery of
penicillin, the first antibiotic known to mankind, Sir Alexander
Fleming was given a Nobel Prize. In a decade of its use, its
side effects were observed worldwide; many people were found
allergic to it. So its modified versions were invented—such as
ampicillin, amoxycillin, etc.—which too are not without their
harms. Sulfa drugs, lithium (for manic-depressive disorder),
and now the much-touted antidepressant PROZAC, all have
Harmful Effects of Drugs met with a similar fate. The pharma company Eli Lilly introduced
this green-white capsule 14 years ago, and lately it had become
a $12 billion industry. But now the sales are decreasing.Euphoria is dead since long.
Only 35 to 40% of Prozac users have been helped; the
others have suffered memory loss or weight gain or sexual
dysfunction or emotional void. Loss of libido in men and
inability to have orgasms in women are complained about.
New drugs have started entering the market, and
“breakthrough” is proclaimed in discoveries, as usual; gullible
patients fall in the trap of fresh tall claims till new side effects
surface, requiring a couple of other medicines to overcome
those new unhealthy developments. So on and so forth, the
cycle of drugs for disease, followed by extra drugs for the side
effects of drugs, continues—ad nauseam , ad infinitum .

LOOK AHEADLook ahead
Do not look back, except to gather
the lesson your past gives as stimulants for your future.
It you fall, get up.
Do not be discouraged. If others are ahead of you follow them.
But keep going towards your goal.
Go with the strength God gave you, swiftly or slowly.
It does not matter.
Always look ahead for your destiny is not to reach quickly,
but to reach at the right moment.

Can We Look Up to U.S.A.
in Health Matters?I he answer to this question, truly speaking, is an emphatic
“NO!” Reasons are many; some of them we mention hereunder.
Between 1991 and 2000 A.D.—in one decade—the follow-ing increase in health problems have occurred in U.S.A.:
(1) Obesity (30 to 50% overweight, as per height) rose from12% to 20%.
(2) Number of diabetics increased from 4.9% of the popu-lation to 7.3% of the population. As per Journal of American
Medical Association (August ’01), the increase is more dis-turbing in children—about 5% of children were diabetic in1991, whereas now there are over 25%! One in every fourchildren is diabetic! This is attributed directly to the growingconsumption of fast foods, increase in sedentary activitiessuch as video games or TV watching, and lack of outdoor
games or exercises. On diabetes and diabetes-related ail-ments or complications, Americans are spending $100 bil-lion annually. Diabetes is a major contributor to blindness, kidney disease, lower extremity amputation, heart attacks andstrokes. A majority of patients, with type II diabetes die ofheart attacks and cerebral hemorrhage. As many as 95% ofall diabetics have type II, i.e. adult-onset diabetes, and 80%of type II diabetics are obese. And these diabetic patients arefound in blacks, whites, browns, Chinese, Spanish, Indianand other ethnic groups, almost equally.
(3) The diabetes and obesity rates have more to do withlifestyle than with genetic makeup. As many as 27.3% ofAmericans avoid physical activity and do no exercise. Only17.5% Americans follow the recommended guidelines ofminimum 30 minutes per day of moderate physical activity, that too, 5 days in a week. Hardly 2% of all adults exercise
daily, unfailingly, for at least half an hour.
(4) Dr. Mohammad Saad of The University of California andepidemiologist Dr. Ali Mukdad (Dr. Mukdad contributes articles
to JAMA) warn that the more obese one becomes, the moreone requires insulin. Saad opines, “The tragedy of our findings is that diabetes is easily preventable. In a major study, we have found that only a 10-pound weight loss and a modest increase in physical activity decrease the risk of diabetes by 58%.”
(5) In U.S.A. the largest business—with the highest in-vestment and maximum turnover—is the manufacture of phar-maceutical drugs. U.S.A. also has more doctors and morehospitals, vis-à-vis its population, than any other nation inthe world.
(6) A cow can easily live to 25 years, but in the U.S. itsaverage lifespan is about 5 years! Being given antibiotics andhormones in its feeds or via parenteral route, it gives about25 liters of milk daily. No sooner the milk yield drops to below20 liters per day, the animal is considered uneconomical andsent to a slaughterhouse; and generally this happens even
before the cow is 10 years of age!(7) In U.S.A. daily 2 million animals are slaughtered forfood.
(8) In 1900, girls in U.S.A. had their menarche at 17 yearsof age. Now the cycle of menses starts at about 10 years ofage. This is largely attributed to the consumption of animalproducts, milk, cheese, ice cream, etc., besides the flesh ofcow, pig, chicken, or fish. Sexual arousal in girls also takesplace at an early age, resulting in teenage pregnancies, abortions, and the resultant physical ill health and psycho-emotional traumas.
(9) In U.S.A. about 5 million children suffer from asthma.Besides these children, who are up to 12 years of age, amongteenagers and adults of all ages, there are 10 millionasthma patients—double the number of cases compared toa decade ago.

Be assured that good health is your Divine Right. Every cell in your body is intelligent & knows how to heal itself.
If your heart races & you feel rushed, remember to take a couple of slow, deep Breaths. You’ll feel better almost immediately.
EAT TO LIVE
Man has to be sensible in his eating habits. Although whatone eats does not kill him as effectively as what eats one
(negative thoughts), food still has an important bearing both
on one’s moods as well as on one’s health in the long run. A
heavy and a good meal is metaphorically called a hearty meal,
this connotation has scientific significance. It substantiates the
impression that our ancestors were very observant and did
observe happenings around them very carefully. When one eats
a heavy meal the one organ that gets immediately stressed is
the heart - hence the phrase a hearty meal. Next, the blood
vessels going to the gut region dilate two to three times their
normal resting volume. This forces a large volume of circulating
blood to be essentially diverted to the alimentary tract, making
the heart feel the need to increase its output by working harder.
In short, the effect of a heavy meal on the heart is almost
equivalent to running a furlong.
If one has passed middle age and has, in addition,
compromised circulation in the coronary blood vessels, the
stress of a meal could bring on an attack of severe chest pain
(angina) or, might even precipitate a heart attack. It could also
bring on a stroke in the elderly if they suddenly stand up after a
meal when blood volume goes down and the circulation to the
brain could be temporarily reduced drastically. Similarly, it is
advisable for the elderly to take rest after a meal by lying down
in a horizontal position before assuming usual activities. It is
not advisable for anyone to do heavy exercise after a heavy
meal. On the contrary, our own research studies published in
the 1980s in London have shown that, blood pressure increases
significantly in young, healthy people after a heavy meal.
This is in contrast to what happens in the elderly and the
old elderly. However, this is only transient. Younger people who
have high blood pressure would, therefore, do well to eat small,
frequent meals instead of large, heavy meals. Normal peopleare also advised the same. This would, in addition, make
metabolism smoother without drastic changes in blood sugar
levels. Large meals with long intervals would unnecessarily
provoke insulin secretion from the pancreas, exhausting it
sooner than later. People who look for ways to reduce weight
would do well to keep this in mind. Just increasing the frequency
of meals eaten, with or without reducing the total amount of
food would help one lose weight!
An ancient habit that exists in some parts of India where
people take a small amount of water just before start ing to eat
is known as aachamanam. Many of us think of it as mere
superstition. It is, on the contrary, a very healthy habit. The
tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach
(oesophagus) is a potentially open muscular tube that remains
closed when not in use. It does not open up like a steel pipe to
let food drop down into the stomach. It just opens to receive
the bolus of food when it reaches the throat and then moves it
down by slow, rhythmic onward-going waves of movement
(peristalsis). Thus when food eventually come to the lower end
where this tube joins the stomach, a small ring-like valve opens
to let food into the stomach. If one swallows a large bolus of
solid food in a hurry, the oesophagus might not be ready to
open up and start its peristalsis. This could suddenly end up
blocking the windpipe (trachea) that opens into the throat in
very close proximity. This could kill people by choking, more
so if the victim is inebriated. Drinking a little water in the
beginning might facilitate peristalsis in anticipation of the solid
bolus following behind. This ‘superstitious’ habit of thanking
God before starting to eat must have got its own religious

connotation probably to improve compliance by the common
man. Ancient wisdom grows out of longitudinal observational
research done over a period of several years.Chewing food well helps in many ways. It strengthens gums
and the teeth. It breaks food into small bits for easy digestion
later. It prolongs the time taken to eat, resulting in less food
being eaten on the whole. It also allows one to enjoy the food.
British Prime Minister Gladstone had written a book on health
wherein he had advised people to chew every morsel two
hundred times, a near impossibility. A recent research did show
that health fanatics who did follow Gladstone’s advice ended
up eating very small amounts of proteins! For the first time the
medical world realised that we have been advocating too much
protein for healthy people. People who followed Gladstone’s
advice, did enjoy excellent health! Curious were the ways of
people like Gladstone who wrote on any topic under the sun.
Half of what one eats, keeps one going and the other half keeps
the medical establishment busy. Eat sensibly to live and eat
less. Eat you must, while a large part of the human race on this
planet does not know where the next meal comes from. They
suffer from under-nutrition and consequent problems. While
half the population of the world has very little to eat, the other
half eats too much and destroys its own health.
l Eat sensibly to be healthy - eat to live.
l Large meals are bad for health.
l Rest for a while after a good meal.
l Drinking a little water before starting on a meal is a good
idea.
l Enjoy what you eat.
l Small, frequent meals are more sensible.
l Eat and let others eat to live well.
– Dr. B. M. Hegde
GANDHIJI'S CONCEPT OF NATURE CUREGandhiji had very early in life lost faith in modern medicine.
He was convinced that for good health all that was necessary wasto live according to the laws of Nature in regard to diet, fresh air, exercise, clean surroundings and a pure heart. Instead of this, man was tempted by modern medical knowledge to indulge himselfto his heart’s content, break every law of heal th and morality andthen seek a cure through commercialized drugs. In revolt fromthis Gandhiji sought to discover for himself a sane way ofovercoming disease without the use of medicines.
Besides, medicine tends to treat disease as merely a matterconcerning the body. But Gandhiji viewing man as a whole findsthat disease of the body is chiefly due to mental or spiritualcauses and can be permanently cured only when man’s entireattitude to life is changed. The cure of bodily disease musttherefore, according to him, be sought primarily in the realm ofthe spirit, in self-discipline and self-mastery throughbrahmacharya, in a thoughtful observance of the laws of Naturein regard to health, and in bringing about a physical and social
environment conducive to the development of a sound bodyand a sound mind. Gandhiji’s conception of Nature Cure istherefore much wider than what is generally understood by thatterm. It is not merel y a cure of disease after it has occurred butan attempt to prevent disease altogether by living according tothe laws of Nature which, according to him, are the same as thelaws of God. Accordingly it invol ves not only the use of earth, water, air, sunlight, fasts and such like to cure disease, but evenmore a transformation of one’s entire life - physical, mental, moral and social - through Ramanama or faith in God, alias HisLaw. Ramanama is not, therefore, for him mere magic whichwhen uttered through the lips will work wonders of itself. Itsignifies, as already said, a complete change in the heart andmode of life of the individual, whereby the indi vidual comes tobe in tune with the infinite and so obtains never-failing diseaseconquering life and strength from the Source of all life.

THE NATURAL BODY CYCLEJust as the body requires the right fuels to build up its
energy, it also needs time, to utilize these fuels. Our bodyneeds to balance, rebuild and eliminate constantly. It has its
own natural rhythm, just as the earth has its rhythms of dayand night, tides or the four changing seasons.
These three functions are continuously going on in the
body, though a particular function is more intense during acertain time of day. These functions work in approximately
eight hour cycles.
Noon to Appropriat ion/Digest ion
to The time to eat, so that the body can most
8.00 p.m. efficiently break it down into nutrients.
8.00 p.m. Assimilation / Absorption
to The time when the body is doing all its4.00 a.m. building and repair work. All the nutrients it
has received during the day, is now used tomake new cells and tissues. This is the timeto rest or sleep, (and certainly not eat!) since
the body is hard at work anyway!
4.00 a.m. Elimination
to The time when the body is getting rid of12 noon all its waste products and debris. All that the
body cannot utilize is thrown out at this time.
This is also why, when we get up, we oftenrush to the toilet, or have to clean our mouth
and face to get fresh.
Living and eating (or not eating) according to these eighthour cycles, is a key method to tune in to the natural
harmonious rhythm of the body.
The secret of losing weight, feeling more energetic, getting
rid of illness, and staying fit in the long run, lies in following
this eight hour cycle of the body.
l Eating only fruits/juices during the Elimination cycle, givesour body the time and energy to clean its toxins. You caneat any amount of any fruit during this time.
l The difference between a banana and a watermelon is only
the water content. So no fruit is actually fattening, or acidforming or mucous causing or heat producing!
l Remember even if you feel like eating a wrong food - tryand eat it at the right time! So do all your indulging at lunch
time or between 12 noon and 8.00 p.m.
l We often tend to ignore and neglect the factors of rest andrelaxation. The body requires this time between 8.00 p.m.
and 4.00 a.m. to rebuild. A child tends to mostly sleep
during the early months - and that’s how it doubles theweight. Never do we grow as much, as in those early
months. So therefore allow the body to rebuild and grow,
through rest, sleep and relaxation.

The thoughts you think & the words you speak are incredibly powerful tools.
Treat each day as if it is your last Day on Earth.Enjoy every delicious, fascinating, wonderful moment of Life.
ORGANIC FOODSOrganic food is more than health food.
This is food that is sustaining to the earth and your body-simultaneously.
By organic, we mean the food value for the entire process
from growing to consuming and finally digesting remains
organic. Customarily even the naturally grown organic foods
are made inorganic, through processing and destructive
cooking methods.
Such food is then rendered useless as a toxic burden to
the body and a pollutant to the earth.
The production of oil, sugar, milk and milk products,
iodized salt, apart from meat, is one of the main sources of
pollution.
Surprisingly, they are still considered to be “foods” and
not chemicals!
Your meal should be created with wholesome, palatable
ingredients that are genetically suited to your body.
It should be carefully designed without using -
l The nonessential, expensive, oil/fat or grease.
l The empty, poisonous calories of salt, sugar or maida or
even white rice.
l The indigestible milk/milk products.
l The harshness of chemicals and preservatives.
l The dead ingredients from processing and refining.
l The ill conceived foods like soya, fibre, yeast etc.
Finally, adaptation to food like this, plays a role in
prevention, maintenance and cure. Be it for your ailing body
or the depleting resources of the earth. For, it is time we
understand what happens from the farm to our table!
l Pesticides, fertilisers and chemical sprays used in food
cultivation and preservation are a major threat to health-
Five decades of pesticide use has left behind a legacy ofsevere contamination. This has affected our soil, water and
air. It has also increased cancer, birth defects, and
respiratory problems.
l There is now a growing concern and realisation that natural
farming methods may be the answer to the environmental
and agricultural problems. It is possible to grow foods -
vegetables, fruits, grain, without chemicals. There are
several communities in India and all over the world, who
have successfully returned to natural farming methods.
l Natural and organic farming helps to sustain an
ecologically healthy life style. It is also more cost effective
in the long run. Moreover, such farming regards nature as
being ‘alive’ rather than ‘dead’. It connects us back to the
web of life.KEY TO SUSTAIN ABILITY - NATURAL FARMING
l Saves and regenerates soil.
l Cleans and purifies water.
l Protects the health of consumers.
l Conserves the web of life.
The only way to overcome the world food crises, is to return
to sustainable farming systems. Traditional crops which are
part of our cultural heritage and our genetic diversity , is today
being replaced by cash crops and foodless foods.
It is possible to grow and obtain natural/organic foods, even
here in Mumbai. Individuals can get together and form a Co-
operative, for such socially constructive activities.

You can change the old tapes of your childhood. Those negative messages no longer serve your mind, body &soul.
If you realise that you have a chronic health issue, look closely at your thoughts to see how your mind-set may be contributing to the situation.
LET ALL BE HEALTHYMay Mother Nature’s Blessings be upon all!!
Man has to live in this world amidst conflicting influences. On the one hand, there are influences that tend to enslave him
and, on the other, there are some that could well redeem him.
Yielding to unhealthy, unhygienic forces can go on pushing
man on to the brink – towards more and more of disease. This
point has been rightly stressed from time to time.
Though the Natural Hygienist stand and explanations
appear to be very logical and quite sound in approach, there
are numerous persons in the world who unfortunately think
that only the practices followed by the vast majority could be
the correct ones. These persons do not care to devote any
thought to the important question as to whether the practices
adopted by them in their day-to-day life are logical and natural.
They follow the line of least resistance and continue to follow
the ‘majority opinion.’It is not as if everyone in the majority has devoted time or
thought to the questions involved. Someone considered to be
an authority says something and persons start following him.
This is how the number in the ‘majority’ goes on increasing!!
As all persons want to be healthy and as health can be
maintained only through healthful living, some time and
thought must be limited not only to matters of food and drink
but to every habit of living, as every habit has its impact,
good or bad, on health.
Let everyone, therefore, design his / her ways of living
after finding out whether the habit in question is or is not a
hygienic one. Let not the vested interests / advertisers lay
down the rules of conduct. Once a person subjects himself/
herself to one or more enslaving influences, it would later
become very difficult to extricate himself from the net. For,
each one of the enslaving influences referred to subjects the
addict to ill-health, more ill-health and more and more ill-health, in course of time. Let the liberating influences as put
forward in the various ways re-shape and re-design one’s
style of life. In other words let every habit of living be one
derived after the use of one’s power of discrimination. This
is the stand of Natural Hygiene, which makes the follower
rely on his own efforts in choosing his way of life, irrespective
of the influences around him. He cannot be dictated upon by
any one from outside. He continues to be self-reliant.
Self-reliance is the one characteristic of the follower of
Nature Hygiene that distinguishes him from those on the other
side. Even when it comes to the question of drawing up one’s
own personal health-recovery programme, he will not subject
himself to any blind acceptance of any so-called authority.
The theories, principles and rules that govern the Science
of Natural Hygiene, as clearly elaborated by Acharya
Lakshmana Sarmaji, have been detailed in the book.
As Nature’s theories and principles can be violated by a
person only at his own risk, there is no alternative left to the
health-seeker except to follow them. Hence let this Science
of Health be properly understood and followed by every one
dutifully, cheerfully, delicately and understandingly.
As indicated by Acharya Sarmaji, let every one be his own
Scientist, use his viveka sakti (power of discrimination) and
chalk out his Path on towards the Goal of High Level Health
the right Royal way. His clarion call to all health-seekers is :
“Arise, Awake, Stop not till the Goal is reached!!”
– Acharya S. Swaminathan
P. S. Acharya Lakshmana Sarmaji is considered the
founder of Nature Cure in India.

5. One reason many people simply make ends meet and
never have enough money is that they condemn money.
What you condemn takes wings and flies away.
6. Do not make a god of money. It is only a symbol.
Remember that the real riches are in your mind. You
are here to lead a balanced life-this includes acquiringall the money you need.
7. Don't make money your sole aim. Claim wealth,
happiness, peace, true expression, and love, andpersonally radiate love and goodwill to all. Then your
subconscious mind will give you compound interest in
all these fields of expression.
8. There is no virtue in poverty. It is a disease of the mind.
You should heal yourself of this mental conflict ormalady at once.
9. You are not here to live in a hovel, to dress in rags, or to
go hungry. You are here to lead the life more abundant.
10. Never use the term "filthy lucre" or say "I despisemoney." You lose what you criticize. Money in itself is
neither good nor bad, but thinking of it in either light
makes it so.
11. Repeat frequently, "I like money. I use it wisely,
constructively, and judiciously. I release it with joy, and
it returns a thousandfold."
12. Money is not evil any more than copper, lead, tin, oriron that you may find in the ground are. All evil is due
to ignorance and misuse of the mind's powers.
13. To picture the end result in your mind causes yoursubconscious to respond and fulfill your mental picture.
14. Stop trying to get something for nothing. There is no
such thing as a free lunch. You must give to receive. Ifyou give mental attention to your goals, ideals, and
enterprises, your deeper mind will back you up. The key
to wealth is to apply the laws of the subconscious mind
by impregnating it with the idea of wealth.

THUS SPOKE MAHATMAJI
Doctors have almost unhinged us.
Sometimes I think that quacks are better
than highly qualified doctors. Let us
consider: The business of a doctor is to
take care of the body, or, properly
speaking, not even that. Their business
is really to rid the body of diseases that
may afflict it. How do these diseases
arise? Surely by our negligence or indulgence. I overeat, I
have indigestion, I go to a doctor, he gives me medicine, I am
cured. I overeat again, I take his pills again. Had I not taken
the pills in the first instance, I would have suffered the
punishment deserved by me and I would not have overeaten
again. The doctor intervened and helped me to indulge myself.
My body thereby certainly felt more at ease, but my mind
became weakened. A continuance of a course of medicine
must, therefore, result in loss of control over the mind.
I have indulged in vice, I contract a disease, a doctor cures
me, the odds are that I shall repeat the vice. Had the doctor
not intervened, Nature would have done its work, and I would
have acquired mastery over myself, would have been freed
from vice and would have become happy.
Hospitals are institutions for propagating sin. Men take
less care of their bodies and immorality increases. European
doctors are the worst of all. For the sake of a mistaken care
of the human body, they kill annually thousands of animals.
They practise vivisection. No-religion sanctions this. All say
that it is not necessary to take so many lives for the sake of
our bodies.
These doctors violate our religious instinct. Most of their
medical preparations contain either animal fat or spirituous
liquors, both of these are tabooed by Hindus andMahomedans. We may pretend to be civilized, call religious
prohibitions a superstition and wantonly indulge in what we
like. The fact remains that doctors induce us to indulge, and
the result is that we have become deprived of self-control
and have become effeminate. In these circumstances, we are
unfit to serve the country. To study European medicine is to
deepen our slavery.
It is worth considering why we take up the profession of
medicine. It is certainly not for the purpose of serving humanity.
We become doctors so that we may obtain honours and riches.
I have endeavored to show that there is no real service of
humanity in the profession, and that it is injurious to mankind.
Doctors make a show of their knowledge, and charge exorbitant
fees. Their preparations, which are intrinsically worth a fewpence, cost shillings. The populace, in its credulity and in the
hope of ridding itself of some disease, allows itself to be
cheated. Are not quacks then, whom we know, better than the
doctors who put on an air of humaneness?
HAPPY IS THE HOME
l Where joy is shared and sorrow is eased.
l Where father and mother are respected, loved and obeyed.
l Where children are loved and attended.
l Where aged people are respected and cared.
l Where prayer is said because it links ourselves with God.
Finally, the art of selfless loving is important to
maintain love, peace and happiness in a family.

When you decide that you want to lose weight, avoid fad diets. The best way to drop excess pounds is to eat a sensible,low-fat, high-fibre diet & to exercise in moderation.
Remember that nature is a great healer. Even small doses will begin to restore your sense of balance, joy & wonder. When you return to your source, your soul is fed.
FAITH HEALSEver since medicine was classed as one of the reductionist
sciences, in the narrow sense of the word, healing took abackseat giving place to palliation and interventions. Doctors
who in the days of yore, were also philosophers, gradually
became more of technicians and resorted to managing
diseases through drugs, surgery and technological
interventions. More and more studies, in the realm of
conventional science, have pointed to the possibility of faith,
prayer, and religious belief helping in the total process of
healing. Although the latter should not replace conventional
methods as yet, they could now be used, and are being used
even in the most sophisticated hospitals, as adjuncts to
conventional methods.
When we can see the effect of a person’s consciousness
(mind) on the onset as well as the progress of the disease - in aholistic approach to disease, we have to accept the fact that
the human mind would have considerable influence in managing
it. If that is accepted, then it is only a question of looking at
how one could possibly use this faith as an instrument in
disease control. How does faith work? What are the
mechanisms that go to heal illnesses? Innumerable studies in
the recent past in the west have shown unequivocally that
people who have a religious bent of mind and are connected
with others in society, in addition to their own kith and kin,
have significantly less incidence of major illnesses. Studies
also show remarkable benefit in those who are already afflicted
with these deadly diseases, if others pray for them. This was
seen in a large, controlled, randomised and matched study of
heart attack patients in coronary care units published in 1997
in the prestigious American journal, Archives of Internal
Medicine. Here, a group of people prayed for the study cohortof nearly 330 heart attack patients without the knowledge of
the cardiologist or the suffering patients. Other medical and
surgical interventions being identical, the interventional group
had significantly less deaths and morbidity when compared to
the control group that was not prayed for!
The study of modern medical literature has indicated the
following facts in the last two decades in various prestigious
medical institutions in the US. This has now prompted fifty
of the 125 medical schools here to have a structured course
in faith healing methods and also about various religious
practices in their curriculum. The salient features of all those
studies could be summed up thus :
l The positive effects of piety that could be discerned fromhundreds of research studies have documented a link
between faith and disease.
l Between 1987 and 1995, more than 21,000 people were
studied that who showed significant increase in the life
span of those who had faith.
l Believers were healthier than the others.
l Believers had a significantly higher chance of survival after
an open heart surgery.
l Believers had lower blood pressure, when compared to
their peers who did not believe in anything other than man
himself.
l Stress reduction was very significant in the group discussed
above, resulting in a more active immune system. They were

Know that Emotional, Physical & Spiritual healing is an unfolding process.
also more relaxed and interpersonal relations improved
significantly. Meditation, prayer, yoga and tai chi were all
the methods used by western researchers.l Indian systems of medicine, led by the mother of all medical
wisdom, Ayurveda, did proclaim these benefits thousands
of years ago, although ignored by the West after the advent
of ‘technological marvels’
Faith and prayer work through the psycho-neuro-
endocrine systems to improve the immune system. The latter
is our army which fights every single disease from common
cold to cancer. The human mind that is said to reside in every
single cell of the body, of which there are one hundred
thousand billion in all, influences all the above-mentioned
systems at the quantum subatomic level to improve immune
mechanisms. Remaining connected to one another and
helping one another goes a long way in enhancing ourdefenses, as shown by the increase in the number of Cd4 T
cells, the best warriors that we have. The reverse occurs in
those who hate one another.
When the mind becomes tranquil with all the above
methods of prayer, it sends positive signals down the
neurological system, predominantly the friend of the
autonomic system which, in turn, transmits the positive
messages to the multitude of endocrine glands that look after
the day-to-day functioning of the body. They, with their
secretions, help the different organs of the body to work in
tandem in order to prevent illnesses to the extent possible as
also to heal damage. Faith does heal!

Reject any Negative pronouncements about your health made by medical professionals. You can alter the course of any dis-ease by changing your mental outlook & by modifying your diet & exercise habits.
HEALTH CARE IS SELF CARE ISEARTH CARE
Everything affects our health. All factors - physical,
emotional, mental, spiritual, environmental - both gross and
subtle. All these elements are interconnected and affect one
another. Health of course begins with the individual. With
the ability to take responsibility for our own health. This is
where all the factors of nutrition, the laws of nature and our
lifestyle choices play an important role. This is the sphere
where we can and must learn to examine our own patterns
and discover how we may have neglected certain areas.
Slowly, we must relearn the art of choosing and becoming
sensitive to the right needs of our self. If one extends this
idea of health further - it is this very process of learning,
that integrates us into the community that we live in - the
social and the environmental. The nature of this community
whether in the city or in the suburbs, whether isolated or ina group, determines the pattern of healthy development.
Concern with health is really concern with the relationships
among the communities at large. Be it our family or our
society.
There is also the broader community - or the
environment, because no matter what we do with our own
health, if the broader environment is crowded by pollution,
stress and noise, it is extremely difficult to develop our own
health. Today more and more, environment factors are
affecting our health choices. What we eat, how we live and
how we breathe. The health of the planet, ultimately affects
our own health. Disrespect and ignorance of Nature and her
mysteries, have caused great havoc on Mother Nature. Our
insecurity and acts of despair have led to the production of

impure waters, acid rain, drought, devitalized soil and
poisonous air. Equally, our bodies are filled with waste,
worms and poisons. Externally too, there is bloodshed and
violence. Battered women and abused children. There is
death and disease, premature ageing and mastectomies.
There is in a sense a breakdown.
Resurrection is necessary, if we want to continue to thrive
on earth with other communities, with nature, with ourselves.
From the global to the personal, it is essential to begin the
process of healing ourselves and the planet.
We can make a beginning by working towards reducing
the emphasis on the current medical market of health (or
illness approach) in favour of a more holistic approach to
wellness. We can perhaps even start a movement towards a
national health policy that looks at a health care system. We
can reduce costs, both individually and socially by
preventing diseases and by eliminating the redundant
expenses of a drug dominated, technological medicalsystem. We can improve our own health and that of the
community and the environment by making wellness, a key
element in our daily choices. By taking active responsibility
for our own health, each one of us can contribute and serve
as facilitator and teacher of well being.
At the Centre, we assist in this process, by providing the
information, guidance and resources necessary for people
to take charge of their lives.
