A wonderful giftMr and Mrs George from Sutton have recently celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary and they have kindly donated £130 which they recieved in gifts to Ditcheat school. Kelsey, seen here in the photo sat on great grandad’s knee, is currently in the reception class and is the fi fth generation from the family to attend the school. The money will be used to purchase books for the children in Cherry class. We were very touched by this generous gift and know that the children will get a lot of pleasure from the books.

Barn Owls in SchoolChildren from Ashcott Primary School received a visit from a beautiful Barn Owl this week. Chris Sperring MBE, conservation offi cer for the Hawk and Owl trust and Vice President of Somerset Wildlife Trust talked to the children about owls in Britain and brought along Beau the Barn Owl to meet them. Each class at the school have been fi nding out about local birds as part of their shared topic with their new link school ‘Yueyang Tower Primary School’ in Yueyang, China. This visit from Chris and Beau was particularly interesting for Owls Class who have found out all about owls as part of a class topic this year. Chris talked to the children and staff about the community barn owl project which aims to get a barn owl box in each of Somerset’s 335 parishes.

E SafetyDuring the month of February the children at Butleigh Primary School focused on Esafety and established an esafety committee. The Year 5 and 6 children wrote pledges in their ongoing commitment to esafety education. During the recent Ofsted inspection the children were highlighted as having an excellent understanding of esafety and a commitment to improve their own knowledge and skills.

Space BuggiesChildren at West Pennard Primary School have been studying space during Space Enrichment Week and were asked to create a moon buggy from any materials they could fi nd at home. The team were amazed at the creations that were bought into school and the creativity the children had shown.

World Book DayWorld Book Day is an enjoyable event for the children and teachers alike at Meare Primary School. The children and staff came to school dressed as their favourite book character for the day. The children took part in a range of book and story related activities throughout the day as well as bringing their favourite books to school to share.

Skype ChinaChildren in Ashcott Primary School have been chatting with their friends at Yueyang Tower Primary School in Yueyang, China. The Yueyang pupils practised their English speaking, sang songs, played a traditional Chinese instrument and asked the children lots of questions about school life in England using the video link. In return the Ashcott pupils learnt many phrases in Mandarin and asked questions about school life in China. They were amazed to hear about the huge number of pupils in Yueyang Tower School and the large class sizes of about 60 children in each class!

There’s a worm at the bottom of my garden!

Year 3 children at Coxley School are learning from wildlife expert Richard Fishbourne about the importance of worms to the health of our gardens. It is part of a project to enlist the children’s help in the development of a wildlife garden for the show house to be built at Taylor Wimpey’s Dunstan Park development on the edge of Glastonbury. As well as getting to know more about these vital creatures, the children have been thinking about other elements needed for the garden and will be making their own designs and collages. Richard, of Bugs & Beasties based in Herefordshire, runs educational workshops as well as helping children to develop their own eco-friendly school grounds.Coxley school already has a ‘conservation garden’ tended with help from the children, and takes an active part in the Fruit-full Schools Project with Crispin School, and even shares gardening experiences with its partner school Gilwadzi Primary School in Kenya.

June 7 Summer opening launchSummer opening launchJune 14 The Wurzels in concertThe Wurzels in concert

It’s been a very cold winter and no doubt lots of us will admit we have stayed indoors and kept warm, but Spring is upon us and the Easter holidays is the perfect time to get out and about in the Spring sunshine.

Living in the South West we are lucky enough to have some fantastic places to visit right on our doorstep from exhilarating horse riding and go-karting to chilled out days sightseeing, there’s so much to do in the local area which you don’t need to spend an arm and leg on fuel to get there.

OUT & ABOUT

Page 7: HEY Wells

A visit to one of the many working farms in the area which are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy a beautiful Spring day whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around.

Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet.

With the majority of us feeling ‘the pinch’ at the moment it’s a good idea to have some plans for some ‘budget’ days too. How about a bike ride along the nearest cycle path, a walk in the local countryside or forest trail to see all the spring flowers or a trip to the local swimming pool.

Most important of all is for the whole family to enjoy some quality time together and for your children to be relaxed and revitalised ready to face the new term and of course for you all to have terrific fun creating some memorable days out.

There is a recognised order in which children develop their speech sounds. The early sounds children start producing, well before they are using words, include ‘m’ and ‘b’ and the sounds which come later include ‘c’ (kuh) and ‘s’. Parents are so used to the way their child speaks they understand every word even when sounds are mispronounced. “I dot a bid dod” (I’ve got a big dog)“My tat id lellow” (My cat is yellow)

It is often when the child starts school the Teacher or SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) pick up on speech delay. It is normal for children in Reception to have some sounds which they are still learning and the daily focus on phonics can prompt a sudden improvement in the clarity of many 4 and 5 year olds’ speech. But some children fi nd it harder to update the sound patterns they have developed – these children are said to have ‘delayed speech sound development’. Children who have had glue ear or other hearing diffi culties can take longer to update their sound systems but delayed speech sound development is common, particularly in boys. Some children benefi t from targeted work on specifi c sounds with a Speech and Language Therapist. A speech and language therapy program helps the child through the steps involved in learning a new speech sound. It is very important to remember a child has to be able to say the sound on its own before he or she can put it into a word. Asking a child to keep repeating a whole word will not help them to say it more clearly.

The key to a successful therapy program is the child builds confi dence and has fun! At Somerset Speech Therapy, a private speech and langauge therapy practice just outside Wells, our small team of experienced, friendly, dynamic therapists set goals that enable the child to experience success and want to come back again!

If you would like to speak to a registered Speech and Language Therapist about any aspect of your child’s speech and language development please contact Pippa at Somerset Speech Therapy on 07983 463525

There always seems to be so much to do when arranging a birthday party and never enough time to do it in. Use our check list to make sure you’ve covered all the bases.

Easter Biscuits

Ingredients8 Eggs150ml milk142ml carton double cream75g plain chocolate, broken up25g golden caster sugar½ tsp cornfl our

Method1. Have 2 bowls ready. Lightly tap 1 egg – at the pointed end – onto a bowl, to gently crack the shell (Peel off just the top). Holding the egg over 1 bowl, gently shake out the egg white, then shake out the egg yolk into the second bowl. Repeat with 1 more egg. Break the remaining eggs as before, but shake out both the egg yolks and whites into the fi rst bowl with the 2 egg whites. You will need only 2 egg yolks to make the custard. (Use the contents of the fi rst bowl for scrambled eggs.)2. Wash the shells in very hot, soapy water, then rinse to remove any bacteria. Cook the eggshells in a bowl in the microwave for 1½ minutes on medium, or bake in a hot oven for 5 minutes.3. Heat the milk, cream and chocolate in a pan over a low heat, stirring until smooth. Beat the 2 egg yolks, sugar and cornfl our together in a bowl, then pour onto the chocolate, stirring well. While still over the heat, use a balloon whisk to stir constantly until custard-like. Tip into a jug and pour, while hot, into the eggshells. Serve warm or cold.

PETS

CORNER

I share my hutch with Rupert Rabbit and we love being together. We have lots of fun and we enjoy running in our pen in the garden and sometimes the children we live with let us out to run in the grass, but they always keep an eye on us so we can’t get out.We have a big shelter in our hutch where we can both sleep and rest when we want to. This is fi lled with hay and newspaper to keep us warm and this is also where our owners put our food too.Our owners always give us a varied diet and we enjoy eating hay and grass, rabbit food from the pet shop and also greens. We enjoy broccoli, kale, fresh herbs and we love fresh dandelion leaves from the garden. Our owner says root vegetables such as carrots are high in sugar so we are only allowed these as treats. We like to have fresh water in our bottle every day.Although I don’t really love being picked up by my owners I do know I need to be brushed and groomed to keep my fur healthy, so I don’t mind that. I like it when my owner holds me close as I feel safe and secure then.I love gnawing on things and it also keeps my teeth healthy too. My owner gives me gnawing sticks and cardboard tubes for fun.I am looking forward to the Spring so I can spend more time outside and in the sunshine.

Hi, my name is Ruby Rabbit
