If you’re a parent you’ll know how difficult it can be to get children to eat breakfast in the morning. Whether it’s because there’s no time or the children simply aren’t hungry, the fact is 1 in 6 children unfortunately miss breakfast everyday.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides you with the engery, vitamins and minerals to fuel your day.A good breakfast sets you up for the day ahead, providing energy and essential vitamins and minerals to fuel your body after a night’s sleep.The government, nutritionists and the Food Standards Agency all agree on this. But in Britain today an alarming number of people still choose to skip breakfast.Scientific studies show if you skip your morning meal you, and in particular children, are statistically more likely to snack on high calorie, high fat foods mid-morning. What’s more, if you don’t eat breakfast scientists say you are unlikely to make up the nutrients missed through others meals of the day.What really concerns us though is the number of children who start the day hungry. Our research tells us everyday in Britain 190,000 children don’t eat breakfast before they leave for school. So, give your children the best start to the day with a healthy breakfast.

Beavers from High Littleton recently visited the emergency response centre at Stanton Drew. They learnt how to give heart compression using resuscitation models, and also how to stop bleeding by applying pressure and a bandage. They looked at the rescue vehicles which included an ambulance, an ambulance car, and a boat pulled by a quad bike. Beaver Leader Tricia Horwood said, “The boys loved hearing the sirens and switching on the fl ashing lights. Each Beaver attending was awarded a fi rst aid badge.”

Alice, a ten year-old Cub Scout from 1st Radstock Group, was presented with a Chief Scout’s Silver Award by District Commissioner Janet Turner at a recent ceremony. To gain the award, Cub Scouts have to complete six challenges.Janet Turner said, “This is the highest award made in the Cub Scout section, and only a small proportion of Cubs manage to achieve it.” Eighteen months ago Alice’s older brother, Jamie, was the fi rst Radstock Cub ever to have gained the award. He is now a Scout, working towards his Gold Award.Alice said, “I really enjoyed working towards my Silver Award and feel proud to have earned it during our Group’s centenary year. My favourite Cub Scout activity is camping, especially when we all sing around the campfi re.”

Keith Masdin from Bathford visited Welton Primary School along with his Olympic Torch and talked to the children about the fantastic work he does for the charity Hope and Homes for Children. Keith has raised over £250,000 for the charity and was selected to run with the Olympic Torch in Oakhampton in Devon. Keith had his picture taken with each child at the school so they would each have a memento of the occasion. The children photographed with Keith are Josh Casling, Shannon Kingman, Jessica Smith, Harry Tomkins, Jenson Brown and Emily Parrott-Pentreath.

The fi nal Midsomer Norton Beaver meeting of the term culminated in the presentation of Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards to four Beavers.The inclement weather had forced a change of venue from the Scout Group’s campsite at Wellow, back to their Headquarters in Radstock Road, but the children still enjoyed an evening of fun during which they cooked marshmallows over a barbecue.The award presentation was made by Jon Stell, the Assistant Group Scout Leader, to seven year-olds Jack, Che, Ben and Sophie. A seven year-old Beaver Scout from Paulton was presented with the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award last week. Jenson is an enthusiastic and committed Beaver Scout, who has worked hard to complete all the necessary requirements of all twelve Beaver Activity Badges.Jenson said, “I’ve had lots of fun and made new friends by being a Beaver.” One of his favourite projects was working towards the Beaver Healthy Eating badge, although he did say that he was allowed treats now and again.On the same evening Jenson, and four other Beavers ‘swam up’ to Cubs: a short, ceremony involving a large blue sheet representing the river with the Beaver Scouts disappearing underneath one side dressed as a Beaver Scouts and emerging the other side dressed as a Cub Scouts.

All the pupils at Longvernal Primary School put on a spectacular performance of The Circle of Life with the leavers taking the main roles as they showed off their superb acting skills. Lexie Parfi tt aged 10 played Sarabi, Harry Kilburn aged 10 played Mufasa, Josh Kelsey aged 11 played Banzi and Rosie Williams aged 11 played Young Simba.Parents of the pupils showed their support for the production as they involved themselves in the creation of the main backdrop, a wonderful African sunset, which was greatly appreciated by everyone at the school.Pupils put their creative skills to use as they each made wonderful animal masks for the performance. Masks were fantastically made and decorated which set the stage alight with colour.Head teacher Jane Richardson said the production had been a great community success with everyone working together. She said “The Circle of Life is a story of change and we used the story to support that idea. It was a celebration of our year as a school and was a lovely way to end the year”.Well done to all the pupils a fantastic performance!

The wet weather of June did not stop 108 Beavers from the district having a fabulous fun packed day on Saturday 30th June as they all met at Chelwood campsite, which is owned by Keynsham Scouts, for an Olympic themed day.Beavers from Keynsham K2, Keynsham Rocky, Paulton, High Littleton, Clutton, Radstock and Midsomer Norton all joined together for a day full of fun activities including arts & crafts, cooking, singing and games. Each group of Beavers made their way around the various bases in order to complete each fun activity.Luckily the rain held off long enough so that the Beavers could sit out in the open air and enjoy the bonfi re which was lit by the Olympic torch. Mr.Elkington who has been involved in the scouting movement since the age of 8 and was one of the torch carriers and the boys were thrilled that he had brought the torch along to the Beaveree and watched in delight as the torch was used to light the bonfi re. The children sat and listened to stories and joined in a good old fashioned sing along led by one of the group leaders, Alan Rosewell, with some of the more enthusiastic parents also joining in.

As the boys listened to the stories and enjoyed the picnics that they had made earlier on in the day, they were completely exhausted as well as covered in mud. A fantastic day had been had by all!

Hand writingTo encourage story writing fi nd a family photograph or a picture from the internet and ask your child to write a story around what they can see. It may be about a family visiting the zoo and the things they see there or even a trip to the moon. The possibilities are endless.

Learning about moneyEncourage your child to use money as soon as possible. Allow them to hand over the cash for payment in the shop and also to collect the change. Once they have been given the change, ask them which coins they have been given and how many of each etc.

The alphabetRecognition and learning through tracing - get your child used to the shapes of letters by fi nger tracing or by colouring some outline letters in.

Early learning skillsTo help your child to get used to controlling their pencil, draw a series of squiggly lines on paper and ask them to draw over them. It can be fun to draw some very basic animal fi gures and even faces and around hands and feet.

Make a special box in which to keep your best pieces of work this school year. If you have a class mascot why not take inspiration from them to make your box unique and special to this school year. You will need: A plain box fi lePVA (white) gluePictures (can be drawings, colourings, cut-outs from comics or photographs)Chose some pictures to decorate the lid of the box fi le. These could be photographs of your child in school uniform, or magazine cut-outs of favourite characters, or anything else that takes your fancy. If you have any brothers or sisters, it may be an idea to add your name to the side of the box in the same way. This will make it easier to fi nd on the shelf.

My name is Bertie and I am a Dachshund,

I live at home with my family and love playing with them. I know that I can be stubborn at times and don’t really like being trained but I do love having fun chasing balls and sticks.I sleep in the house but some of my dog friends sleep in kennels in their gardens but we all love our families and are very grateful for all of the love and attention they give us.We all know that having a dog as a pet is hard work and can sometimes be expensive too but we do offer loads of love in return. My owner is very careful with fl ea and tick protection for me as I love to walk in long grass and run in the woods and this can sometimes cause ticks to stick to my fur. I go to the vets regularly for my health check ups.It is best to feed us dogs a grain-free diet. While the better quality dog food may cost more, we can eat less of it since our bodies use more of what we are eating, producing less waste. Not to mention the vet bill if we develop issues from consuming a low quality food. I eat twice a day and have a meat based diet at all times, I eat at the same times every day and this helps my owner to know when I need to go for a walk too but I also love a treat every now and then when I have been well behaved.I am going to curl up in by dog basket now and have a little snooze.Bye bye
