PAULInE Fielding, of Heswall, was invited by her MP Ben Chapman, to attend a tea party in Parliament for “heroes”, who have made an outstanding contribution to the voluntary sector in their community. Ben Chapman said: “It was an honour to

attend this event with Pauline Fielding, who is a tireless campaigner for justice for road crash victims. She carries out exceptional work for the charity RoadPeace, which offers practical and emotional support, raises the profi le of road safety and seeks to challenge leniency towards those who break traffi c laws. It also provides invaluable advice and a national helpline. “I am delighted that Pauline’s work has

been recognised in this way. The charity has had a signifi cant impact on the lives of people in Wirral South and across the United Kingdom.” After the tea party, Pauline said: “I was

honoured that Ben chose to invite me and pleased to accept. I had a fantastic time. It was good to meet the other volunteers and I also enjoyed seeing how Parliament works. “our aim at RoadPeace is to end discrimination against road crash victims and to

ensure that road victims will receive decent treatment and services, and that society will suffer far fewer unnecessary road deaths and injuries in future.“I would like to thank Ben for all the support he has given, and continues to give,

as my MP. His advice and encouragement have been invaluable and are greatly appreciated.”Pauline started the charity following the death of her son Andrew, who was just 18

when he lost his life in a car crash on the A540, in neston, back in 1994

GUM disease is not only a condition that affects humans and with large numbers of both dogs and cats developing gum disease by the age of three years, preventative dental care has never been more important. Not only can your animal be in a considerable amount of pain in its mouth, but bad teeth also have a direct relationship with other medical conditions including kidney and heart problems which can lead to more serious health conditions. In sim-ple terms, gum disease involves complex bacterial infec-tions. These bacteria can become free in the bloodstream and travel from the mouth to distant organs, potentially creating serious disease at such sites.

Periodontal disease is the most common dental condi-tion affecting dogs and cats. This is where the gums become infected and inflamed and is caused by bacteria present in plaque and calculus (tartar). The problem begins when plaque and calculus are allowed to build up on a pet’s teeth, especially below the gumline. Some of the symptoms that your pet may experience include: bad breath, bleeding and inflammation of the gums, receding gums and loosening of teeth. Your pet may also have difficulty eating its food and may continually “paw” at its mouth.

Preventative treatment to keep the teeth clean is therefore of great importance. As a vet, I would strongly recommend an oral hygiene programme that includes regularly brushing your pets’ teeth with a toothpaste formulated for animals (never use a toothpaste made for humans). Diet is also a major factor in the development of plaque and calculus. Soft or sticky foods should there-fore be avoided, while certain chewing toys are beneficial. Our own pet food range “It’s the Vet’s Pet Food” provides a complete diet to help keep your animals healthy. There

are also specially formulated diets with dental benefits available for dogs – please speak to one of our staff for further details.

Like most preventative treatments, it is best to start dental care at an early age. Introduce brushing gradually and begin by rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums with a soft cloth wrapped around a finger. Gradually switch over to a toothbrush designed for pets or to a very soft human toothbrush. Try to make this a pleasant experience for your pet and always praise and reward your pet for its cooperation.

Regular dental check-up visits to your vet are strongly recommended. Hardened tartar should only be removed by your vet, as this requires the use of special instru-ments and equipment. Routine periodontal treatment performed by a veterinarian typically includes ultrasonic scaling, subgingival scaling, and polishing. All dental procedures in pets, including scaling and polishing, are performed under general anaesthesia, however the current state-of-the-art of veterinary anaesthesia is such, that this poses minimal risk in most cases. The adverse effects of bad teeth on the overall health of the animal also greatly outweigh the anaesthetic risk.

To keep your pet’s mouth healthy, we have some great dental offers throughout September to make you smile. See our advert for further details and to book an appoint-ment.

THERE used to be a slogan that “Making a Will won’t kill you”.The whole point of

making a Will is to make sure that you decide who receives the assets within your estate so it does not fall under the intestacy rules or leave you with unnecessary inheritance tax implications However, who you

choose to prepare your Will might have consequences that do not coincide with your intentions, warns Maxwell Hodge Solicitors.Recently there have been situations

where people have died and their loved ones produce the Will only to fi nd that the gifts are invalid, as the Will has not been properly drafted. There are many advertisements in

newspapers of companies who advertise as “Will writing companies” but,a) who regulates them?b) what happens to the Wills they store if

they go out of business? c) what qualifi cations do they have?d) are they insured if they are negligent? You will often fi nd that their Wills are

“kitchen sink” i.e. include everything just in case something is missed, but it is by using that method that errors are made and gifts are then invalid. As a fi rm of solicitors, we are governed

by the Law Society and are covered by insurance, and at Maxwell Hodge we specialise in this area of work. our Wills are specifi c to each client’s individual

circumstances and tailored to their requirements. It is therefore vital that proper advice is

sought from solicitors to guarantee that your assets are left to those you love and they won’t experience disappointment after you have died because the Will has not been drafted correctly.our Lifetime Planning Department

offers specialist advice regarding wills, inheritance tax planning, applications for probate and administration, lasting powers of attorney, registration of enduring powers of attorney, and care home advice.

If you would like to make an appointment to make a Will or for advice regarding a Will that you have already had drawn up, or any other legal advice, contact solicitors Margaret Gordon or Jennifer Howell on 0151 342 6447 at Maxwell Hodge Solicitors.

Why wife ran away with my best mate. I was really upset. I still miss him.

THoRnTon Hall’s restaurant has

undergone some big changes from its previous incarnation as the Italian Rooms. With contemporary flashes in the tableware and now named The Lawns, it boasts stunning views of the hall’s gardens and can comfortably seat approximately 50 people. new head chef Gordon Campbell is already putting his own stamp on the menu and comes to Thornton Hall with a big reputation. It is clear that there is great enthusiasm amongst the staff as they embark on an exciting period of change and there is no doubt that the restaurant is heading in the right direction. The restaurant’s midweek

lunch offers a variety of well constructed dishes, using stunningly fresh seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Starters include seared red mullet and pressed terrine of ham hock with piccalilli. The seared red mullet in particular was cooked perfectly and was balanced with a zingy basil pesto. Highly recommended for the main course is the exquisite grilled salmon

with sautéed potato and wilted spinach, but our favourite was definitely the pea and spring onion risotto which was deliciously creamy. The peas, in particular, were bursting with freshness as if they had been picked that very morning and cut through the creamy risotto, creating a perfectly balanced dish. Restaurant manager

olivier Gamory served two wines, a delightful Chardonnay which perfectly complemented the freshness of the salmon and a red Pinot noir which went well with the ham hock terrine. olivier explained that the Paul Jacqueson label, which is from the Bourgogne area, is not easy to find in his native France so it is a considerable coup for the restaurant to secure such

an exclusive brand. Thornton Hall have

already earned two AA rosettes and the aim is to add another this year. olivier explained that their exciting menu is constantly evolving according to the seasons, so that the vegetables and meats fit in perfectly with the time of year.Remarkably, such a

fantastic dining experience does not cost the earth. The midweek lunch menu offers two courses for £13.95 and three courses for just £15.95. The three course Sunday lunch offers a greater range of dishes and costs just £18.45. Even better, from 1st october the restaurant will offer a three course Sunday lunch dinner menu with a bottle of wine for £39 per couple.

Highly recommended.

Fox & HoundsHAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY

It’s 25 years since licensee Ralph Leech moved to ‘The Fox’ in september 1984 when it had just a bar and the snug. The yard at the back was the car park. Many changes were made in the early years when the lounge was created from

the old tea rooms and the addition of the car park created what has become a very popular and traditional local venue for socialising and drinking with its range of six cask ales featuring regular beers and guest ales together with five lagers, over 60 whiskies and 12 wines by the glass. The Fox is renowned for its traditional good value, high quality lunch time menu

served from 12-2pm, which is now complemented by new starters and lighter lunches, together with the ever popular regular main course menu, salad platters, toasties, open sandwiches and baked potatoes together with the ever popular scrumptious desserts. The menu includes traditional roasts on sundays, served till 2.30pm. Tables can be reserved on 0151 648 7685
