Last month on July 13th, the dedication of the “Elliott Site” took place at Paleo Park inside the gates here at Heritage Pines. It was a day of celebration to acknowledge the efforts of one

of our own residents, Herb Elliott. The Elliott Site is registered with the State of Florida and is known as the Elliott Site, 8PA596. Due to the efforts of Herb and his wife Paula, Heritage Pines contains one of the top five most important finds in the State of Florida. An amazing fact since there are over 35,000 sites registered with the state. Approximately 100 people attended the ribbon cutting for the new sign that will forever mark this site that goes back to 12,000 BC. Following the ceremony over 100 people attended a luncheon in the PAC room and among the guest speakers was Pasco County Commissioner, Jack Mariano. It was a very exciting day and was one of those moments when you realize how good it is to live here in Heritage Pines… A great deal of work took place last month on the common grounds throughout the community. Straw was spread in many areas along with new sod where it was needed. The banks of the large wetland area behind the homes on Scenic Hills and Grand Club Dr. were sprayed for weed control and mowed down as much as possible. An airboat was also used to spray the water's surface to control the water lily growth by 30%......Meetings with the landscape architect to review his proposals for the new landscaping at the front gate entrance continued in July and are being reviewed by the Common Grounds Committee. A final drawing should be done this month.

Bill Crusselle, Club Manager

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

By Bob McGough, HPCA Board President

I hope all of you enjoy Heritage Pines as much as I do. It is a truly great place to live and we hope to make it even better for the future. There are a number of

enhancing projects on the books that when com-

FROM THE BOARDOF DIRECTORS

pleted will have a positive impact on our community. A new pavilion by the tennis courts, new floor in the PAC and hallway by the library are but a few of the plans. Mike Russell has put together an impressive entertainment program for the rest of the year and the project to enhance the appearance of our front entrance is moving ahead and should start soon. If you haven't noticed we have seen a lot of improvement in the common grounds and golf course. These improvements are the result of a supportive resident base and hard work on the part of the HPCA staff.

Kudo's to the Pauley's for their outstanding July 4th celebration and giving the opportunity for Ben Bell to post the Colors, something Ben has wanted to do and never had the chance until now. We had a great crown and outstand-ing performers.

Our new committees are in place and we anticipate a great year going forward. The budget process has started for formulation of the 2017 budget and the challenge in from of us is to develop a realistic budget and focus on balancing revenues and expenses. As all of you know our revenues have not been keeping place with expenses and we need strengthen our revenue stream and at the same time examine new ways to improve our efficiency and control costs.

Speeding is still an issue that we need address. All of us. Thus far we have been lucky but luck will last only so long until excessive speed results in an accident. Please observe the speed limits and help us be safe.

GOLF COURSE AND GROUNDSDEPARTMENT NEWS

Greetings from the grounds maintenance staff. We hope everyone is enjoying a restful summer. Thus far in our area we have been very dry with above average temperatures. This pattern is the total opposite of the summer weather that we experienced last year. Currently we are busy growing in sparsely turfed areas on the course and reducing weed populations. This is achieved through maintaining a balanced fertility program, treating weeds and insects in a timely manner, providing adequate irrigation, and performing cultural practices such as vertical mowing, aerification and topdressing on a regular basis. You will observe the spray rig and aerator frequently in use throughout the summer months. We appreciate your patience with the maintenance staff operating equipment on property as we strive to minimize its impact within the community and on the golf course. The summer tree installation program has begun as we replace declining trees and add memorials in appropriate locations.

Our initial submission of the redesign for the front entrance is currently being reviewed by the common grounds committee. We are in the process of evaluating the design and putting cost estimates together for plant installation. We should have finalized plans ready for community viewing sometime in August.

Looking forward to seeing you out and about in the community!

Hello to Everyone in Heritage Pines Community. Just to let everyone know, we now have a new Emergency backup cell phone at the

Gate House. Only used when phones are not working, our new number is (727-236-0591).

Summer Weather Safety and SurvivalSummer Safety Tips

Thinking About Yourself

• Avoid the Heat. Stay out of the heat and indoors as much as possible. Spend time in an air conditioned space. Only two hours a day in an air-conditioned space can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illness. Shopping malls offer relief if your home is not air-conditioned. If air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine. Remember, electric fans do not cool, they just blow hot air around.

• Dress for the Heat. Wear loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Lightweight, light-colored clothing that reflects heat and sunlight and helps maintain

RESIDENT SERVICES & SUPPORT

normal body temperature. Protect your face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Avoid too much sunshine. Sunburn slows the skin's ability to cool itself. Use a sunscreen lotion with a high SPF (sun protection factor) rating.

• Drink FOR the Heat. Drink plenty of water and natural juices, even if you don't feel thirsty. Even under moderately strenuous outdoor activity, the rate your body can absorb fluids is less than the rate it loses water due to perspiration. However, if you have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restrictive diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.

• Do not drink IN the Heat. Avoid alcoholic beverages and beverages with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and cola. Alcohol and caffeine constrict blood vessels near the skin reducing the amount of heat the body can release. Although beer and alcohol beverages appear to satisfy thirst, they actually cause further body dehydration.

• Eat for the Heat. Eat small meals more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein because they increase metabolic heat. Avoid using salt tablets, unless directed to do so by a physician.

• Living in the Heat. Slow down. Reduce, eliminate, or reschedule strenuous activities such as running, biking and lawn care work when it heats up. The best times for such activities are during early morning and late evening hours. Take cool baths or showers and use cool, wet towels.

• Learn the symptoms of heat disorders and know how to give first aid.

Thinking About Others

• Do not leave children in a closed vehicle, even for a few minutes. This is a "No-Brainer". Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can reach 140°F-190°F degrees within 30 minutes on a hot, sunny day. However, despite this common sense rule, deaths from heat occur almost every Summer when someone leaves their child in a closed vehicle. When outdoors, protect small children from the sun, their skin is sensitive.

• Help your pets keep their cool. It will "feel" as hot for them as it will for you. As with children, do not leave your pets in a closed vehicle. Be sure your animals have access to shade and a water bowl full of cold, clean water. Dogs don't tolerate heat well because they don't sweat. Their bodies get hot and stay hot. During summer heat, avoid outdoor games or jogging with your pet. If you would not walk across hot, sunbaked asphalt barefoot, don't make your dog walk on it either. (Dogs can also get blisters on their paws from hot pavement.)

• Learn the symptoms of heat disorders and know how to give first aid.

• Protect windows. Hang shades, draperies, awnings, or louvers on windows that receive morning or afternoon sun. Outdoor awnings or louvers can reduce the heat entering the house by as much as 80%.

Everyone's vision can change with age. Some changes are normal, but losing one's vision is not a normal part of getting older. Healthy Vision Institute will be visiting Heritage Pines to provide complimentary screenings to residents. With age, everyone is at a higher risk of developing glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and other eye-related diseases. There are no early warning signs or symptoms before they become serious.

Are you having trouble hearing? Are you overdue for a checkup? Concerned about the health of your ears? Affordable Hearing has been providing this complimentary service to our residents for a couple years now. We strongly recommend signing-up, as the time slots usually go fairly quickly. This is a complimentary clinic for all residents of Heritage Pines to take advantage of. Some of the services being provided include: Video Otoscopy examination to check for Ear Wax, Ear Wax Removal, Hearing Screening, Clean and Check Hearing Aids, One Complimentary Pack of Hearing Aid Batteries.

American military personnel are allowed to wear a Paracord Survival Bracelet because it is a device they can use in an emergency. The bracelet unwinds in a matter of seconds so that the cord can be useful in various ways.

Join us as we make more bracelets to send to our Troops overseas. The sign up on the sheet is provided in the Clubhouse Lobby.

By Mike Miller, ACC Chairman

This is the time of the year that committees reorganize membership and determine how to better assist the community. The Architectural Control Committee (ACC) continues to improve guidelines in the ACC Manual which includes adding options that allow the homeowners to improve their home and property that ultimately increase resale values.

The committee, with the assistance of Dineen

we have certain special projects in mind for this year, such as St. Jude and Walk for the Cure, we will also continue to sponsor workshops. We are open to suggestions from all HP residents and welcome your attendance and participation in any of our meetings. Also, the more volunteers we have, the more projects we will be able to complete, so step right up and get your name on the list.

We look forward to seeing you!

HERITAGE PINES LIFESTYLE COMMITTEEA Heartfelt THANK YOU to our Drama Club for their donation of $1,394.00 to bring our final donation to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital to $10,000. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we work together. That is what makes Heritage Pines such a wonderful place to spend our retirement years. Be sure to support the Drama Club. They have two very special productions coming up in the Fall, I know I will be there.

Why should you continue to use the Green Fiber bins? The Environmental Issues Commit tee (EIC) has worked for a long time keeping residents informed where the Green Fiber bins are located. Four of them are by the RV storage and three are located in the lower parking lot across from the Clubhouse. Green Fiber pays Heritage Pines for the paper, newspaper, and cardboard that is collected. This money is used by the EIC to add to the ambiance of Heritage Pines. If you shred paper, be sure to put the shredded paper in a plastic or paper bag and place the bags in the bin.

Where do the green benches come from as well as a number of trees, plantings, Gazebo Park and Paleo Park – The Elliott Site, the memorial to Chuck Frogge and Joe Bratt, support for the Audubon programs, and sponsoring the annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day? All of these projects have been funded through your recycling effor ts, especially paper recycling. The funds available to this committee are used to enhance our development and we hope to continue to do so. Just remember Heritage Pines gets zero dollars from Pasco County collecting the newspaper and cardboard but we do get a check from Green Fiber.

“Dee” Robinson, Assistant Property Manager, remain ready to provide the homeowners with whatever help they require. When submitting an Exterior Change Request (ECR) please use the new form included on the next page.

Green Fiber Bins for Paper Recycling

It is good that Pasco County is now picking up newspaper and cardboard along with the regular recyclables on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. But, here at Heritage Pines our residents have already been recycling these two items for several years.

The Community/Memorial Tree Program provides the o p p o r t u n i t y f o r o u r residents to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one or friend. Trees may also be purchased to honor a person or because you wish to donate one in your name to beautify our community. They can also be purchased as a gift, perhaps a birthday or anniversary idea. Prices vary according to the type and size of tree. Residents may choose a general location for a donated tree which can be on the golf course, along the main boulevard or in other areas of the community. The final placement of each tree will be approved by Heritage Pines maintenance facilities. Trees will be planted during the months of March/April and October/November. Please plan your purchase dur ing the preceding months. The Community/Memorial Tree Program is headed by Linda O'Leary. Please contact Linda at 819-9207 for pr ic ing information.

Also, there is a book at the front desk of the C l u b h o u s e l i s t i n g information about the many trees planted throughout our community. Each page includes the names of the honoree(s), sponsor(s), tree location and type of tree. Residents may look through this book as desired.

Are you out of town, travelling, or just plain busy when tickets for a major event go on sale? No worries, Heritage Pines is now proudly offering a “Will-Call” procedure for those residents who are unable to purchase tickets the day they go on sale. The events and shows at Heritage Pines have become incredibly popular. So much so, that we are booking many events and shows with back to back performances. Tickets are selling on the first day they go on sale! It goes without saying, that the Clubhouse has become the hub of social activity within our community.

“WILL CALL” TICKET PROCEDURE

Here is how it works:

1. Email [email protected] with the following information:

a. Your Name

b. Your Phone Number (the best one to contact you on)

c. Your address within Heritage Pines

d. The event you want tickets for

e. How many tickets you want

f. Your member number

g. And most importantly, you must include the following phrase in your email: “Through this email, I authorize Heritage Pines to charge my member account for the number of tickets requested. I understand that this charge will show on my monthly statement.”

2. Click Send! – it’s that easy...

3. Now, here are a few follow-ups:

a. Will-call tickets will be purchased AFTER all residents who have “lined-up” on the day of and received their tickets.

b. Only ten tickets can be purchased per resident account.

c. Tickets will be purchased in the order they are received.

d. We cannot accommodate residents who wish to be seated with anyone else, tickets will be sold to the first available seats.

4. Tickets can be picked up at the front desk at a time that is convenient for you!

We hope this added service comes as a benefit to you all!

In the early 1950s, Eddie Mannix is busy at work trying to solve all the problems of the actors and filmmakers at Capitol

Pictures. His latest assignments involve a disgruntled director, a singing cowboy, a beautiful swimmer and a handsome dancer. As if all this wasn't enough, Mannix faces his biggest challenge when Baird Whitlock gets kidnapped while in costume for the swords-and-sandals epic "Hail, Caesar!" If the studio doesn't pay $100,000, it's the end of the line for the movie star.

GOLFER "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course."

CADDIE "Try heaven, you've already moved most of the earth."

• If you see lightning, even in the distance, get off the golf course immediately. Strong thunderstorms can develop quickly.

• Rush to a dense, wooded area. Lone trees are dangerous.

• When caught in the open, fall to your knees. Fol low this procedure immediately if you feel the hair on your arms or head rise.

• Get rid of your umbrella. Even umbrellas with nonmetal shafts are dangerous.

• Stand well away from your golf clubs and never get caught holding one. In an electrical storm, golf clubs are perfect lightning rods.

• Get as far away from ponds and lakes as possible. Water an excellent conductor of electricity.

• Golf carts are not a safe haven. The notion that rubber tires ground electricity is a myth.

• Avoid the green. Greens are often a bit higher than the surrounding terrain. The flagstick is especially likely to be struck.

We play a variety of games and look forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday afternoon at 12:15 with a 1:00 tee time. Hole-in-One – On Friday June 10th during “Couples Play”, Bob Klepps had his second recorded Hole-in-One, his first one occurred in December 2004. Bob's playing partners was his wife Linda and Paul and Loan Sherwood. The ace occurred on the twelfth hole. Bob was playing from the white tees and he used a seven iron for the 154 yard shot. Congratulations Bob!

Member Profile MGA President Bill Stoehs

Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY; the oldest of four children. The youngest, sister Joan, is a resident of Heritage Pines. He grew up in Rutherford in northern New Jersey. After high school Bill attended Lamar University. Upon graduation he was off to Navy OCS in Newport, R.I. Bill was commissioned and served two years on the USS Kaskaskia (AO-27) as First Division Officer in the Mediterranean Sea. When his ship was decommissioned Bill attended training and then left for Vietnam's Mekong Delta. He served with River Assault Division 153 as Senior Patrol Officer and later as Commanding Officer. Bill also served as Senior Advisor to a Vietnamese Navy unit, River Interdiction Division 48. Bill returned home and was fortunate to meet and marry Cathy, his wife of 44 years. They have a daughter Jennifer (Spring Hill), and sons Bill (Coral Springs, FL), Brent (Tampa) and Bryan (Hartsdale, NY) and six grandchildren.

Bill continued in the Naval Reserve for the next 20 years serving in assignments which included work with the Joint Chiefs at the Pentagon and completing the Strategy & Policy program at the US Naval War College. He retired as a Captain.

On the civilian side, after earning his MBA degree, Bill was an executive in the technology sector working for companies such as AT&T and Sprint. He also served on two business boards, national non-profit boards and Florida state boards for two Governors.

In 2004, upon learning of Cathy's cancer, Bill retired and they found Heritage Pines. Bill has enjoyed golfing here and has been Co-Chair of the Golf Committee twice. The highlights of his Heritage Pines golf has been twice winning the Member – Member Tournament with his partner Bob Thomas and being a flight winner on the Member – Guest Tournament with his son Brent. Other interests include cruising, speaking to local high school JROTC units and delivering the “Preparing Your Survivors” presentation which he created.

Bill states that he feels very blessed to live in such a wonderful community and to be able to play golf with so many great folks!

“The Few. The Proud.” The Niners? Although that patriotic adage refers to “The Marines;” The Niners can lay claim to it as well.

Only “the few and the proud” would venture out for the summer we have had, thus far. Temps in the 90's and “feels like” running into the 100's have made playing the course a real challenge.

None the less, the Niners made sure they had a full June and July. Carol Donahue arranged for 33 Niners with friends and family to travel to Tarpon Springs for a boat ride and lunch at Hella's. Niner's reported the trip was wonderful as they saw an Osprey nest with baby chicks; and they marveled at the dolphins and manatee surrounding the boat.

Next was Father's Day, June 12. Niner's and Diners saw 18 players take to the course for a basic scramble. The winners were by random drawing—Judy and Byrne Gamble/Jeff Siddons and Cindy Carter. Bill Schiecz won the Father's Day Flowers. Gracie Ellis and Skip Scott opened their home for a pizza party afterwards. Although, Gracie was unable to play due to shoulder surgery, she still hosted the party. Well, Gracie is Gracie—and she is doing awesome and will return to play soon.

A Tuesday without golf? With the course closed on July 5th; that was not how Janice Bennedetti wanted to spend the day. So, she organized a shopping trip, where she and about 15 other Niner's “shopped till they dropped. The shopping was at the new Tampa Outlets. Afterwards they met for lunch at GrillSmith Restaurant at Wiregrass Mall.

Are You Prepared For The End? (The end of the production of R-22 refrigerant that is). The EPA announced the final phase-down of R22 imports. Subsequently, 18 million pounds of new and imported R-22 will be allowed in 2016. No new or imported R-22 will be allowed in the U.S. on or after Jan. 1, 2020. What this means! Well first, the price of R-22 refrigerant is skyrocketing as we speak. It has already doubled since this time last year and is expected to triple in the next few years. Secondly, the supply of R-22 refrigerant is already limited, and as the phase out continues, you can expect availability to fall. Eventually, contractors may not be able to guarantee to always have R-22 on hand. What are your options? If you have an existing R-22 heat pump or air conditioning system, you do not have to rush out and buy a new R-410A system right away. You can continue using it, but at the very least, you should make sure to properly maintain your unit. But for our customers who have R-22 systems over 10 years old, you may want to consider replacing now rather than later. Newer systems with R410a have a smaller carbon footprint. The newer unit will save on utility bills, and have 10 and 12 year warrantees.

Please call to schedule one of our Comfort Specialists for more information along with all the benefits of having a new energy-efficient system installed in your home or small business. We look forward to having the opportunity to serve you.

HERITAGE PINES GOLFHANDICAP COMMITTEE

By Joy Stefany, Chairperson Handicap Committee

The USGA Handicap System has posted some frequently asked questions. The question for this month: “If I pick up on a hole, what score do I post? For handicap purposes, record the score you most likely would have made – but, that score must not exceed your Equitable Stroke Control Limit.” Your Equitable Stroke Control (ECS) is the maximum score to be posted on a hole.

Course Handicap – Maximum Number 18 Holes on any Hole

9 or less Double Bogey

10-19 7

20-29 8

30-39 9

40 or more 10

Nine-Hole Course Maximum NumberHandicap on any Hole

4 or less Double Bogey

5-9 7

10-14 8

15-19 9

20 or more 10

Remember that the ESC is for POSTING SCORES. If playing a game i.e. stroke play, you must count all strokes until the ball is in the hole for the game. You adjust the scores after the game and before posting.

In order to participate in events, you MUST have an accurate handicap. The Village Tournament is coming up. Be sure that you have a current and accurate handicap.

Long-time Niner Needs prayers—Marietta Guaragna.

To all family members, friends, and neighbors. It is with deep sadness that I write to inform you that Marietta has been diagnosed with both vascular and Alzheimer's dementia in the moderate to severe range. As many of you know she has been declining over the past few years since her aneurysm surgery in 2008. Her PC, Psychologist and Psychiatrist suggested we go to McLean Hospital in Boston for a much more thorough evaluation. We did so on 6/16 and she was discharged on 7/2.

After extensive testing and psych consultation the diagnosis determined that the patient will require more intensive management/assistance such as an assisted living facility in a memory care unit following hospitalization.

She is currently in an assisted living facility. I know in my heart that it is the best way for her to be treated. I hope you will remember her as she was, as opposed to how she is now. I ask that you keep us both in your thoughts.

Love, John

ASK THE TECHIEQ: I have just purchased a Chromebook notebook and want to connect to my printer. The USB connection doesn't seem to work. How do I connect the printer to the notebook?

A: Unlike Windows and Apple MAC computers, Chromebook systems don't current support printing via USB connections. They only support printers via Google Cloud Print that are connected to your home network.

To determine if your printer is Cloud Print supported do a Google search or go to this website: https://www.google.com/cloudprint/learn/printers.html. If the printer only supports a WIFI connection you will need to enter the WIFI settings manually at the printer or by using a Windows or Apple computer. If you can connect the printer with an ethernet cable it should be ready to go.

Once you have the printer on your home network, you will need to register your printer with Google Cloud Print. To do this, click the Chrome Menu icon, and select Settings from the drop-down menu. Select Advanced Setting, Google Cloud Print and Manage. If your printer is supported it will be detected and available for selection.

Q: My Windows Desktop is becoming cluttered with various Icons such as Adobe Acrobat, QuickTime etc. Is it safe to remove these Icons?

A: When installing a program for the first time or updating an existing one, an icon often is placed on the desktop. These icons are usually shortcuts to the actual program and are not needed; since the program is selected automatically when opening a document, video, picture, etc.

To determine if an icon is a shortcut, verify that there is a small Arrow in the lower left portion of the icon above the text description. A shortcut can be safely deleted from the desktop without affecting the functionality of the program. If you don't see an arrow the icon represents a Windows function (Recycle Bin, My Computer etc.) or is a document you saved to your desktop.

To delete an icon: drag it to the Recycle Bin or Right Click on it and press D. The icon will be removed from the Desktop and will be in the Recycle Bin. Remember that icons are like any other file and can be easily recovered from the Recycle Bin.

LADIES BOWLING LEAGUEThe Heritage Pines Ladies Bowling League will soon be starting the 2016-2017 season.

Bowling is one of the easiest and enjoyable activities that you can do with friends and neighbors. The rules are easy to understand and a computer keeps the score. It is a sport that can be shared by all ages, gender and abilities and has been around for a very long time. Little or no bowling experience is needed to join our league.

Our Ladies Bowling League is a nonsanctioned league that enables women of all abilities and bowling experience to enjoy a nice afternoon of exercise (in a nice, cool air-conditioned setting). All women in Heritage Pines are eligible to join and we welcome new residents who would like to bowl with us. We bowl on Wednesday afternoons at 1 pm at Spring Hill Lanes on Commercial Way. Teams will be selected by random draw August 17 in the PAC room at the Clubhouse. The first day of league play at Spring Hill Lanes (either August 31 or September

Additional ROMEO Activities this month

Sunshine Committee: Our Sunshine Committee is responsible for sending out condolence and get well cards on a monthly basis. Two get well cards and one condolence card were sent out in July. We hope our members will keep us posted when they know of any ROMEO member who should be receiving a card. Send your information to our ROMEO secretary i.e.; Skip Scott at [email protected].

ROMEO Club Website: This website is currently under construction by our ROMEO secretary. When completed, it will include a picture of each member as well as a short personal profile. This way all members can get to know each of their fellow members better just by accessing the website. For those of you who would like to check out the website just go to: https://sites.google.com/site/romeoclubofhudsonfl/home.

Reporting Change Of Email Or Phone Number

Some of our ROMEO members have informed us they have not been receiving our emails. In checking, we found that the member had changed his email address. So, in order for all of our members to continue receiving correspondence from the Club, we are asking that if you change your email address or phone number just send a short email to our secretary (Skip Scott at [email protected]). Skip is responsible for all data on our roster. Skip sends each ROMEO board member an updated ROMEO roster every month and also sends it to our entire ROMEO membership on a quarterly basis. The roster includes the phone number and email address for each and every one of our 200 plus ROMEO members.

Recent Research

It is proven doing water exercise two to three times a week can have significant improvements in strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. It can also decrease the risk of disability, improve balance and increase your ability to perform daily activities with ease.

Heritage Pines folks don't realize how fortunate they are to have this form of exercise right at their fingertips with a United States Water Fitness Instructor who is certified.

7 BENEFITS OF WATER EXERCISE

SHALOM CHAVURAHOur group is open to all new and established residents of Heritage Pines. We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. Please join us. An Oneg follows the prayer service.

Chavurah meets on the first Friday of the month in the Craft Room at 7:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please call Sheila Schwartzman at: 863-8802. We look forward to seeing all of you. Shalom y'all.

1. Less joint impact: The buoyancy of the water reduces joint loading, which is particularly beneficial after joint replacement as well as to help manage chronic pain. “Less joint stress” was reported by all of my clients as a key benefit. “Water exercise was recommended by doctors. After knee surgeries, it is the only low-impact exercise I can do.”

2. Total body training: Water provides multi-directional resistance, making it easier to enjoy a more balanced workout. For example, on land arm curls targets the biceps both on the way up to lift the weight against gravity and on the way down to control against gravity. In the pool, it's different. Resistance is everywhere. Try this same move. On the way up, biceps work against water's resistance, but the triceps must engage to resist against water on the way down. “Water exercise gives me a full body workout. I have gained strength and stamina!”

3. Reduce joint and muscle pain: Gentle exercises help to improve circulation and hydrate the muscles. Multi-directional moves help to pump nutrients to the joints helping to reduce joint and muscle pain experiences constant arthritic knee pain: “Water exercise is the only exercise that makes my knees feel better.”

4. Gain more mobility: We can move more freely in water. Regular participation will reduce stiffness and make movement on land more comfortable. “Water exercise helps keep my back limber.”

5. Improve heart health: Water exercise is a great low-impact aerobic activity. Depending on your fitness level, options from walking to high intensity intervals – each have

TENNIS ASSOCIATION HIGHLIGHTSIn the heat of summer, tennis play continues!! Those who love this sport do not let heat keep them off the courts! However, NOTE---for Ladies Tennis, the start time is now 8:00 a.m.

Ladies Monday Morning Tennis: One change has taken place regarding Ladies Tennis on Monday mornings. There is no Monday Ladies Tennis LEAGUE from now through September. However, there is Women's Tennis on Monday mornings! Carol Vaughan will run the tennis play for the ladies from now through September but not as a league. There will be no rating/rankings. What Carol will do is send out an email at the end of the month to see who would like to play Monday morning tennis the following month. Then she will make up a schedule of players for each Monday during that month, along with a list of subs. So far Carol has nine players and two subs but there is plenty of room for rotation during the month. Play starts at 8:00 a.m. and if you are interested, contact Carol Vaughan at: [email protected]

Summer Leagues, Open Play, and Monday Ladies Play: Summer leagues and summer open play are continuing. It's not too late to sign up and join in. In addition, subs are always needed so please consider helping out your tennis friends by signing up if you haven't already. Joe Gorecki says they are at the halfway point for the Men's Summer League and he has 12 players participating (nine regular and three subs) so he has been able to support two courts all summer. See below for league and open play details and contact information for both men and women.

Men's League: Monday, 6:30 p.m. (May to Sept), Joe Gorecki ([email protected])

Men's Open Play: Tuesday & Thursday, 8:00 a.m., Bill Tory ([email protected])

Women's League: Monday, 8:00 a.m. Carol Henningsen ([email protected])

Women's Open Play: Wednesday, 8:30 a.m., Carol Henningsen ([email protected])

What's the difference in Women's Open play on Wednesday and the Women's Monday play?? The Ladies Monday play is structured from month to month. Carol knows who is planning to show up and creates a schedule for each Monday for the whole month. The Women's Open play is unstructured as players just show up and court assignments and partners are figured out on the spot.

New HP Residents: You are always invited to come out and join the open play. Even if you are rusty, open play is for everyone and is a good time and good exercise. Membership to HP Tennis Association is only $10.00 for the year. Contact Veronica(Ronnie) Boxx ([email protected]) or President Christine John ([email protected]) if you want to join and play and meet some of the friendly men and women that play tennis. You are also welcome to sub on the leagues as we never have enough subs! One other thing, membership gives you the opportunity to practice using the ball machine which has recently been repaired. The ball machine is locked in the storage area by the restrooms at the courts. You have to complete instruction on using the ball machine and Joe Gorecki is the contact to set this up. Get started today!

Have a great summer filled with tennis!! Whether on the courts or watching the pros on TV, there is lots of tennis taking place. See you on the courts!!!!

a positive impact on cardiovascular health. Even very fit, 20 year-old says: “I get a great cardio workout in the pool … just the same as on land!” –

6. Build better balance: Water supports weak muscles and helps minimize the fear of falling. It provides confidence as the body is constantly challenged to stabilize against the continuously moving water. Try rhythmical moves to improve balance. For example, trying jogging; Right Foot, Left Foot, Right Foot – HOLD (on right). Then, Left Foot, Right Foot, Left Foot – HOLD (on left). Repeat several times.

7. Stay cool: What better way to burn hundreds of calories than staying cool while you work! Since water is cooler than your body temp, the heat flows away from your body and results in feeling as if you are never “breaking a sweat. “Water is so refreshing! I love being able to exercise outside.”

Most importantly keep moving.

The Library has received many new donations in the past several weeks. Many residents have obviously been reading and cleaning off book shelves! There have also been a few residents who have asked about donating collections of books. While the offers are appreciated, we cannot take large collections and have suggested the residents contact a Veteran's organization or another charity. Our shelves are very full and we are constantly trying to eliminate duplicates and items that seem to never draw any interest.

Remember fiction books are on the right-hand side of the Library and non-fiction books are on the left-hand side of the Library. Please place returns and donations on the cart at the far side of the Library.

First a note of apology to all for the "senior moment" this writer had for the June Bunco games. For future info on when we have our games, it is usually played on the last Thursday or each month except when certain holidays fall on the last Thursday and then Bunco is played the Thursday on the week before. TAKE NOTE: AUGUST'S BUNCO GAME WILL BE PLAYED ON THE THIRD THURSDAY, AUG. 18! We will be meeting in the Magnolia Room and will start promptly at 6:30 pm. We only have space for 36 people so be sure to be early and bring the appropriate envelopes to play. If you have any questions, please call Marcia Gerber at 819-1662 or Betty Plante at 863-8462.

Verrilli fills the bill! It's a wonderful play based on Charles Dickens' 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol – with a more modern twist. Here's the scoop. . .

Bitter Ebenezer runs Scrooge and Marley Cosmetics without the help of his business partner Marley, who had tragically died from a reaction to their new anti-aging cream. (Their makeup also disfigured Tiny Kim so badly she now wears a paper bag over her head!) The only thing Scrooge likes about Christmas is that he makes a small fortune selling cheaply made, but expensively priced cosmetics. When Marley's ghost appears, she reveals that she's doomed to wander for eternity chaining together Mall-Mart carts. It seems the “Big Guy” gets a 75% discount at Mall-Mart in exchange for free ghostly labor! Worse, she reveals that Scrooge's name has suddenly appeared on a Coshko smock! Can Scrooge avert a similar fate? Three loony ghostly visits follow, with zany characters determined to change Scrooge's outlook on life before its too late.

Janette Pauley is producing this play, and you'll see a number of familiar faces as well as some new actors. We're all looking forward to it, and we're hoping you'll join us for one of the shows over the Thanksgiving weekend. We have an evening show on Friday, November 25th and Saturday, November 26th, from 7:30 to 10:00, as well as a matinee on Sunday, November 27th, from 2:00 to 4:00. We'll keep you posted, but in the meantime, mark your calendars!

MARY GIELLASUMMER FOOD DONATION

By

The Principal George at Mary Giella asked me if we could collect food for the children for the summer. He has asked the county for a van to pick up food from our community; he will come once a week with Patti and get the food to some very needy children. We had to stop as the roof and ceilings at the school are being replaced and we couldn't store the food safely. So he was concerned that these children would be hungry. So with the van he can pick up the food and get it to the children. With this being said I hope we can collect enough for the summer. I have asked for the barrel to be put in the lobby on June 9th, so the first pick up of food was June 16th. Please put any non-perishable food into the barrel. Any donation big or small will help these hungry children so much. Any questions you can call Wes or myself at 727-869-9642. Thank you so much.

We have had three softball practices (July 1st, July 8th and July 15th) since we submitted our last softball article for the July newsletter. All practices were held as scheduled since there were no cancellations due to weather related issues; however, as expected for July, it was hot and humid for each of these practices. We made sure everyone kept well hydrated and had extra waters on hand for those players that may have forgotten theirs. Of the four fields at Memorial Field, the field we play on was always raked and the pitcher protection screen installed at every practice. Our thanks go out to the Pasco county workers who keep the fields very well maintained.

The following players were at one or more of our three practices held in July: Mike Engel, Bob Gardella, Al Grosso, Allen Havekotte (new player), C.B. King, Ric Lane, Al Lang, Ron Krow, Paul Katzenback, Jeff Mariano, Kevin McCrystal, Frank Staar (new player), Jimmy Pulver, John Szucs (new player) and Chuck Winzer.

HERITAGES PINES SOFTBALL

Our most well attended practice was on July 8th; wherein, we had 10 players participating. Each player had two batting sessions per practice of 30 hits per session or 70 hits per practice. Some of the players cut off their second hitting session if they became too tired in the heat.

Any resident of Heritage Pines is welcome to join us for some fun and healthy exercise with your friends and neighbors. We are always looking for new players; so, if you are interested, just show up at Memorial Field on New York Avenue(which is the second left off Little Road) at 9:30 a.m. on Fridays.

COWBOY ROBICS LINE DANCINGWhere can you go to get a great work-out, learn a new dance and then have lunch??? Answer: Our very own PAC room. Qigong & Tai Chi Combination –Thursday at 8:15 a.m. in PAC

Tai Chi Helps Your Brain Grow

The University of South Florida recently completed a study in conjunction with Fudan University in Shanghai that was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. This study

compared seniors without dementia who practiced tai chi to similar groups that had stimulating discussions, walking, and no intervention for eight months. The results? The tai chi group showed brain growth of ½ of 1% over eight months, measured through MRIs. “Tai chi can be gentle, but it requires concentration to master and move correctly through the precise sequence of poses. That mind-body involvement could be what makes it effective for brain health, researchers theorized.”

In my classes, I'll often see new students getting frustrated with their balance and becoming confused learning so many seemingly complicated Tai Chi moves.

Two things should be kept in mind:

1) When you do Tai Chi, don't say “I'm going to do a Tai Chi WORKOUT,” say, “I'm going to PLAY Tai Chi.”

2) The Alzheimer's study that just came out showed that Tai Chi increases brain size, and it is this, sometimes frustrating complexity, that creates chaos in your head - that is what you feel when you sprout new neurons.

So that “chaos” and “disorientation” we feel trying to learn where to put our left foot, right foot, left hand, right hand, and breathe and loosen, and align our posture, etc. … that feeling of chaos is actually new neurons sprouting … it's not a bad thing, but a very good thing to feel.

If you stick with Tai Chi you will get it! If your head tells you “I'm too clumsy to do this, I don't deserve to do this, only people who are good at Tai Chi should be in the class”; then you might drop out, and you won't enjoy the lifelong benefits of Tai Chi. Tai Chi will untangle the head and the heart as it does the body if we keep an attitude of “playing” Tai Chi.

We welcome all new students to the beginner class on Tuesday and the Qigong & Tai Chi combination class on Thursday morning.

The Heritage Pines Sportsman's Club meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month in the Magnolia Room at 11:00 am. This meeting usually lasts about an hour. Afterward, many enjoy lunch together in the Clubhouse. This month's meeting is scheduled for August 11th.

Club activities include: bocce, pistol and rifle target shooting, clay target shooting, horseshoes, fresh and salt water fishing, biking, canoeing and kayaking. Everyone with an interest in these and other related activities is welcome to join us.

On Wednesday mornings, in alternating two week intervals, those who shoot trap, skeet, five stand and crazy quail form groups and carpool to either the Silver Dollar Shooters Club in Odessa or to Robinson Ranch in Dunnellon for some friendly competition with the All American Trap and Skeet Club of Timber Pines. Of course, after shooting, we have lunch together at one of the good local restaurants.

Car pools usually leave the community around 8:30 a.m. Silver Dollar and Robinson each offer traditional trap, and skeet shooting as well as other shotgun games like crazy quail, and

five stand which are also a lot of fun to shoot. All skill levels are welcome to join in the fun and friendly competition with the All American Trap & Skeet Club of Timber Pines.

Should you need help in arranging transportation for the Wednesday morning excursions to Robinson Ranch or Silver Dollar, call Mike Milkowski at 516-857-2229.

Rifle & pistol target shooters shoot at The Phoenix Gun Club on Wednesday or Friday mornings. Check out the Phoenix website for their range schedule.

Paddling outings are coordinated by Howard Stringer. Biking adventures are presently being arranged by Pat Lanphier If you would like to join in or have suggestions and ideas for other outings and adventure, give Howard and/or Pat a call. Howard can be reached at 727-819-8059 and Pat at 352-686-6598

Paleo Park Elliott Site 8PA596 was formally celebrated by the community on Wednesday, July 13. More than 90 residents gathered to enjoy the festivities that included a ribbon cutting outside the park followed by a luncheon in the PAC Room. The guest speaker was our own Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano who addressed the residents. The Commissioner praised the work and dedication of Herb and Paula Elliott along with that of numerous staff and residents in the community.

The site was originally named “Paleo Park” on September 24, 2011 in recognition of Paleo-Indian artifacts discovered by Herb and Paula which dated back some 12,000 years. More than 3500 artifacts were cataloged, photographed and eventually donated to the Florida Department of Historic Preservation in Tallahassee. The site has been recognized as one of the top five most significant archeological sites in the State of Florida.

Randy Doolittle spoke on behalf of the Board of Directors and presented Herb and Paula with a commemorative plaque in “appreciation for the many years of dedication, contributions and preservation” of the park. Carla Becker put together a wonderful video presentation of the park which the residents thoroughly enjoyed. It will be available on the website.

Meg Amelia, Chair of Common Grounds spoke about the need to continue to support the efforts of the Environmental Committee in recycling since this is how many of the needs in the park are financially met throughout the year. The Common Grounds Committee including Sara Brundage, Dolores Houskeeper, Alice Peters, Karen Rumptz, Terry Tagliaferro,Deb Tribbey, hosted the event. Tampa Bay Times covered the story.

“Dr. Higgins was very caring and concerned about every aspect of my healing, understanding that I needed to be back to work as quickly as possible. I feel that I was totally prepared for my surgeries and the recovery phase. Now, six months later, I can say that it was worth everything I went through. I am so thankful to be the recipient of the God-given knowledge, skills, talent and compassion that Dr. Higgins used to give me back my life.”

“I was very impressed with Dr. Michael Higgins, when he treated me for severe shoulder pain…so when my son broke his arm it was no surprise I took him to Dr. Higgins where he also received great care. Once again, Dr. Higgins and his staff worked their magic and his arm is as good as new!”

“At the age of 22 I was diagnosed with deteriorating cartilage disease chondrolysis. Over the years the condition worsened to avascular necrosis. After repeatedly being turned away by other surgeons I was recommended to Dr. Michael Higgins…within six weeks after surgery I was walking without the need of any assisted devices.”
