Brief History

In about 1607, theJesuits, built a small chapel to serve the newest settlement named Estanzuela and it was to be the foundation of the San Jos de Placer Church and Parish.Internal Church politics saw the parish change hands frequently over the years. When the Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1768, the Dominicans took over for a few years and the Parish was transferred to the Diocese in 1775 until 1868 when the Augustinians took it over.San Jose Parish Church

Brief History

The original chapel had been built of light materials bamboo etcFriar Mauricio Blanco, the first Prior of Iloilo, named in 1873 started to restore and expand the original Chapel. He later, laid the foundations of the new Church using stone and brick. The original concept was to build a church in the Byzantine architectural tradition including three naves and a transept.Friar Blanco finally completed the church in about 1885 and in fact started to add two belfries in 1893 using several hundred laborer's. They added a clock and a barometer to the towers and began the construction of the Convento.

San Jose Parish Church

The churchs appeal lies less in ornamentation and more on the rational modulation of forms and spaces. Typically Renaissance in inspiration, the church faade is neatly divided into proportionate vertical modules, pierced by arch and round apertures. Features of the San Jose Parish Church

The twin bell towers flanking the faade uses composite capitals and has a balustrade running above the fourth floor.

The church interior has an arcade of Corinthian columns supporting a faux barrel vault over the nave and groin vaults over the aisle.

The main altar has some Gothic touches. A precious treasure of the church is an image of the Nuestra Seora del Rosario discovered by Diego Quiones during the Dutch siege of Iloilo on 29 September 1614.

The Javellana building is a two storey building constructed in the year 1922.The building is characterized by a series of arches from the ground up to the second floor.

The parapet is accented by pedestals at irregular intervals.
