 My intention with this sweater was to provide a basic top‐down baby sweater pattern that could easily be adapted to many sizes and decorated with any number of designs on the bot‐tom.  But I chose this design because I have been in a Mosaic Knitting State of Mind lately.  A friend pointed out that the design looked like a keyboard (the kind we type on, not a piano keyboard) and thus the sweater received its name.  Materials:  1 skein each of 2 colors of Cascade Heritage 150 yarn in sharply contrasting colors.  Pictured sweater is colors 5618 and 5640.  Size 4 and 5 needles, 16 inch circular and DPNs for both and 24 inch circular for 5s only.  A couple extra 16 or 24‐inch circular needles in size 5 or smaller to serve as sleeve holders (or hold sleeve sts on scrap yarn) OR SIZE REQUIRED TO OB‐TAIN GAUGE.  Markers, 8 in one color and 1 in a contrasting color.  Gauge:  6 sts/inch in stockinette st.  Gauge will be a little tighter in pattern.    Size:  The directions are for size 6 mon(12 mon, 24 mon).  Where only 1 number is given it ap‐plies to all sizes.   Chest measurements are about 20(23, 26) inches.  Glossary: PM:  Place marker. RM:  Remove marker. YO:  Yarn over. TBL:  Through the back loop (to twist the st). Sl 1:  Slip one stitch from left needle to right inserting the needle as if to purl. YB:  move the working yarn to the back of the work as if to knit the next st. YF:  move the working yarn to the front of the work as if to purl the next st.   

Directions:  Top:  W/smaller circular needles and dark yarn, CO 90(90, 95) sts. PM (the odd‐colored one to mark beginning of rows) and join in the round being careful not to twist sts.  Note: join falls in the middle of the back. On first row decrease 18 (18/19)sts evenly spaced around row to pro‐vide extra stretch in the neck edge so it will go over the head comfortably.  To do this work first row as follows: *K2, P1, P2tog, rep from * around row. (72(72, 76).  Then work 7 more rows of K2, P2 ribbing. Change to larger needles and attach light yarn.  K 1 row and P 2 rows for first light‐colored ridge. Set‐up row:  K11(11, 12), PM, K2, PM, K10, PM, K2, PM, K22(22, 24), PM, K2, PM, K10, PM, K2, PM, K11(11,12).  Row 1:  *K to next marker, YO, SM, K2, SM, YO, rep from * 3 more times, K to end of row.  

Row 2: *K to next marker, K the YO  TBL, SM, K2, SM, K the YO TBL, rep from * 3 more times, K to end of row.   Repeat rows 1 and 2 three more times.  Work another contrasting color ridge by knitting the first row with increases but then working 2 rows in purl with no increase in the 2nd purl row.  Continue striping in this way until there are 54(58, 64) sts in front section.  Change to 24 inch needle when there are enough sts to go around.  The length of the sweater from the cast‐on edge should be 4‐1/2(5, 5‐1/2) inches.  If it is less than that, work a couple of rows without in‐creases.    Establish body and sleeves:  K to first marker, RM and K1, place 2nd raglan st and the sleeve sts plus 1 of next raglan sts on spare needle or scrap yarn.  DO NOT use a straight holder, the sleeve sts need to wrap around to allow joining of back and front.  Continue knitting 1 raglan st and front sts. and 1 more raglan st.  Place 2nd sleeve with a raglan st from each side on an‐other spare needle/scrap yarn and knit final raglan st and other half of back sts onto working needle.  There will be 112(120, 132) sts on working needle for body of sweater.    Continue in stockinette and ridge pattern until one more contrasting color ridge has been completed.  Work 4 rows of garter st with main color inc’g 8(8, 14) sts evenly spaced in 2nd knit row.  Begin pattern stitch  The pattern:  Repeat of 8 sts, 16 rows  Row 1:  with Light Color, *K3, Sl 1, rep. from * to end of row. Row 2:  *YF, P3, YB, Sl 1, rep. from * to end of row.  Row 3:  with Dark Color, *Slip 1, K1, rep. from * to end of row. Row 4:  *YB, Sl 1, YF, P1, rep. from * to end of row.  Rows 5 and 6:  with Light Color, repeat rows 1 and 2.  Row 7:  with Dark Color, K Row 8:  P  Row 9:  with Light Color, K1, Sl 1, * K3, Sl 1, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2. Row 10: YF, P1, YB, Sl 1, *YF, P3, YB, Sl 1, rep. from * to last 2 sts, P2.  Rows 11 and 12:  with  Dark Color, repeat rows 3 and 4.  Rows 13 and 14:  with Light Color, repeat rows 9 and 10.  Rows 15 and 16:  with Dark Color, repeat rows 7 and 8.   

Repeat rows 1 to 16 until sweater measures about 9(11,13) inches from edge of neck ending with a row 8 or row 16.  Work a light ridge dec’g back to number of sts before pattern and then change to smaller needles and work K2, P2 ribbing for 1(1‐1/4, 1‐1/2) inches.  Bind off loosely.  Sleeves:  Pick up the sts from one of the sleeve holders.  Starting at underarm, and using the larger size DPNS, attach dark yarn (leave about a 10 inch tail) and knit every row until sleeve measures 4(5‐1/2, 7) inches from join.  Work 1 ridge with light yarn dec’g sts down to 36(36, 40) with decs evenly spaced around row.  Cut light yarn, change to size smaller DPNs and work ribbing to match ribbing at bottom of sweater.   Note: the sleeve lengths provided are sugges‐tions, tailor the sleeves to the length of your baby’s arms.  You may even be able to get some extra months of wear out of this sweater by adding to the cuffs over time since babies at this time of life seem to grow arms and legs without corresponding increases in their bodies.  Finishing.  Weave in ends.  Sew up small holes at underarms as you weave in the end that is right there.
