10th Anniversary Year, 1988
Dear Friends,
Celebrations are a delightful part of all of the cultures of
our
world. To us here in Haiti there is a special celebration - a
mark
of growth and accomplishment all wrapped up in ten wonderful
years.
Yes, this is Christianville*s tenth anniversary year.
The Lord has blessed us with the production of a VIDEO FILM
that
depicts, the work here as seen by two professional volunteers,
Doug
Johnson and Tim Hardin. Tim was the photographer and Doug did
the
script. They had help and encouragement from their church, East
91st
Street Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN, for which we are
very
grateful. We are sure you will enjoy seeing it and perhaps
owningone to show to your Sunday School Class, Church, or
friends.
You may borrow it from Christianville..write us at our MAF
address
and we will send it to you. If you want to purchase one you may
for
$12.00 which covers the cost of the film and postage.
We have also writtfen a larger edition of the EVANGEL as a
second part
of our celebration.'. This covers our work quite well so we hope
that
you will take time to read it and to pray for us as we continue
to
serve the Lord here.
Let's be thankful together and rejoice in God's goodness... for
theseten fruitful years, for all of God's children who have helped
to makeit possible and especially now for this loving church and
people whohave made our new film possible.
Your servants...in Christian love,
Jim and Carol Herget

Dear Friends,
Volunteers, beautiful volunteers have given Christianville
anothergreat thrust forward. The month of March has been a super
blessingin this.
From E. 91st St. Church in Indianapolis came a team of
professionalsled by Neal and Louise Hursh - a painter who made our
new school abeautiful sight. The deep red doors against
cream-yellow walls arelovely. A photographer and a writer joined
hearts and did a complete story of Christianville including our Mt
and Jean Jean out-reaches. We are excited about seeing the planned
"TV" program whenit is finished.
There was an engineer who helped Sam settle the plumbing
problemsfor the school sanitary building, women who worked in every

CHRISTIANVILLE -August 1988
Dear Friends,
Kids, kids everywhere...so many of them that we found it
difficult to keep anaccurate count for VBS. It was around 600 and
perhaps more. And oh, it was
a delightful VBS. A team from Berkly, W.Va. came to help and did
a super job.Lessons were bright and good, singing terrific>
handwork lovely, puppet showsoriginal and inspiring, good food.oh,
those hundreds of fried eggs I, and agreat spirit was a blessing
among our many teachers and workers. We praise Godfor another
beautiful opportunity to reach our children with God*s Word,The
rush is on! School opens September 5th and we are hurrying to get
the finaltouches on the new school kitchen. It is really lovely.
Sam is busy! We have
planted trees and are making sidewalks, hiring teachers and
planning the vocations, GREAT NEWS! A new tractor for our
agriculture program has been given -can you imagine Paul's joy over
that!New workers are coming to help,,Tim Severance from Michigan,
Wayne and Judy Blackand son Jester from W. Va., Dr, Steve Henley
(Dentist) and Christine Freeman fromNew Mex, Meantime, we are
thankful for the teams that have been coming to help,,
an "Eye Care" team in August, a work team to erect an
agricultural screening project and others. This team for
agriculture has provided over $4000,00 in materials and shipped
them to us. The high-school students are excited about
schoolopening.
Jean Jean has just completed their 2 week evangelistic meeting
with up to 357 inattendance. Their numbers did not fall under 200
on any night in spite of fre
quent rains. Last night the river was high but adults decided to
cross. Afterthe service Paul drove the truck to the river and
turned the lights on it so the
people could see to cross. The water was up to their necks and
we feared fortheir lives. They had 2 hours of walking to their
homes after crossing the riverand so had carried tiny oil lamps to
light their way. In crossing the river theyheld the lamps high out
of the water. In spite of the fears for their liveseveryone noticed
the beauty of the line of lamps as they crossed. How thankful we are
for you! We can't begin to tell you all that is happening inthe
work here, but we can express our love and thanks for making it all
possible.May the Lord bless you - this is your work and it needs
your prayers. God keepyou close to His heart.

WHAT IS CHRISTIANVILLE ?
In the beginning our hearts and lives were deeply embedded in 29
years of missionaryservice to Jamaica, W.I. We believed that we
would never leave. Then a chain of eventsbrought us to the place
that we were convinced the Lord would have us serve Him in Haiti. We
answered an invitationbythe President of Haitito come and build.
Promises were madeand mostly kept - we were off to a good
start.
Wefaced thispieceofopen landwhenthere was nothing buta vision
and a challenge. TheLordprovided step by step - never failing inHis
promise ofcare and provision. To us therewere continued "miracles"
- results ofwhich we bring to you inthis tenth anniversary issueof
our "EVANGEL". The work is a many sided prism., one of those sides
being themarvelous and beautiful change in the lives ofourchildren
as we havewatchedthemgrowin their Christian lives.
The other sides are the expressions of lovethrough
Christianville's manyprojects...clinics,schools, farm aids etc. And
lastly, the wonder of building- buildingthat is intented for
thefuture, strong,spaciousand uplifting tothenameofourHeavenly
Father. TheLord, throughHischildren,has providedforthe 20
structures already built and we trust Him forthe needsof the
buildings now in progress.
A testimony to God's bountifulcare is here at today's
Christlanville. We have not done Italone many many hands have
joined together. We have not borrowed money - we oweno debts. The
Lord has provided and we trust Himone day at a time.
"Blessed be the Name of the Lord!"
Come with us nowand walkwith us through the years that bring us
to the Christianville oftoday. We welcome you I

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A SPIRITUAL OUTREACH
AtChristianville the Spiritual thrust began witha medical
clinicexpressed out of the backof our VWVan. Atoot of the horn
brought the sick and ailing out of their huts. The late Dr.Morris
Schwartz from N.Y. who visited so regularly, often worked far into
the night byflashlight.
Three days a week we travelled from town to greet the sick and
needy. In addition tomedical aid we gave food... tons and tons of
it, provided by the USAID. There was milk, wheat grains, cornmeal
and oil. It was ourfirst expression ofGod's loveto a needy
people. We felt it was not yet time for formal services of a church
- we wanted our people tounderstand what the Gospel of the Lord
Jesus really is.
Bythe end ofthat first year we were readyfora
straw-roofedshelter forthe church and thepeople were ready to
listen. At the same timewe had begun our home so that we couldlive
among our people.
TodayChristianville's Spiritual efforts are centered inthis
beautiful building that seats over500. Lucien Dorcelin is the
preacher.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A MEDICAL CENTER
The first real need we found when we discovered Christianville's
challenge was the needfor medical help. True it was that there is a
hospital just seven miles away. But first youneed busfare. Then you
need the fee for registration to see the Doctor. Then you are
givenaprescription. And ifyou have reached thusfar financially,
more often than nottheperscrip-tion goes back home with you for
lack of funds to purchase.
In fact, many never reach the Tap-Tap. (Haitian bus system) So,
webegan... like we said, off the back ofourVWVan. In addition to
the helpitgave ourpeople, itgave usthe definite direction forthe
establishment ofour Medical Clinic. During theseyears we have grown
through thehelp of many wonderful volunteersto a more organized
medical outreach.
Today we have a full time HaitianDoctor, Sandy our five year on
thejob Nurse as his Assistant, and several other employees in our
Lab,Pharmacy, TB center, Family Planning section, and Nutritional
center. We average over 400 patients aweek.

IT REACHES OUT A HAND OF LOVE
Shelter from the hot sun was a necessity and even withour
efforts, the shelter overflowsdaily. The medical handoflove reaches
all ages...Moms andDadswith serious needs, theirkids and the
Grandparents. We have seen Sandy giving a baby mouth to
mouthresusitation while we drive frantically to the hospital. The
baby lived.
Wesee Sandy leave the dinner tabledayafterdayto attend an
emergency. Yes, and wehearthe clinic van revupin the night when she
iscalled tothe dying. Thereis nothing toomuch for Sandy. Her hand
is the hand of love.
Teaching is a constant effort in the clinic - youth must learn
to carry on. Haitians teachHaitiansand Nurses get much of their
training on the job.

'IIT TEACHES OUR YOUTH TO FOLLOW IN OUR STEPS
Claudetteis one of our High School girls. She has a deep desire
to be a Nurse-wants togive her life to Christian service. She will
be a head-start student when the timecomes..ieave that to Sandy. The
Nutrition Center is a part of our medical work, too. It is designed
by a Governmentprogram and food isallotted through the generosity
of theUnited States. They give toourschodi, too. Babies and tiny
tots upto the age offive are elegible on the basis
ofseveremalnutrition. Nutritional rates in the children are graded
- too often the children are at adangerous level and we do find the
parents bringing them to ustoo late. The number ofchildren in this
program hasrallied around 400 for the past three years. And there
arethreecenters - one at Christianville and two in the
mountains.Wesend outmedical "scouts" tofind the little ones inneed.
Theprogram includes nutritionalteaching for the mothers, daily food
for thebabies and a lesson from God's word.At times when funds
permit we have extras - and needed they are! Tucked in between isa
"soup-kitchen" for the elderly, no longer able to work. Here is
another ministry of love.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS A DENTAL OUTREACH
There is a beautiful building - fit for our beautiful
people.
The enuipmentis modernand efficient including a panoramic X-ray
and a singletoothX-ray.alabandallthat isneededtomeetthe
everydayneedsofourchildren. Yes.itisadentalclinic dedicated to the
restoration of child rens' teeth., children of Christianville
school andchildren of other Christian orphanages and schools. Kids
are often bussed in whenvolunteer dentists come. And it is
beautiful to see ourchildren growing up with good solidteeth,
having them cleaned regularly and checked and restored.
But It did not begin here. In the beginning it was a chairkindly
donated by a supportingfriend. Dr. VirgilUllumrescued the chair
added accessories and went to work in a one roomdental clinic.
Like everything else at Christianville, itgrew!

THE BEST OF CARE IS THERE...
WITH THE ORTHODONTISTSTANDING BY ... TO HELP
FAME, "Fellowship of Associates ofMedical Evangelism" provided
the fundsfor the building along with the help ofsome individuals.
Dr. Ullom through hisown Dental Outreach Inc. raised thedental
equipment from well-wishers inthe U.S.
Then Dr. David Leever popped in, hunghis hat and offered to be
our Orthodontist. For three years now he has comeregularly every 6
weeks - helping ourkids, helpingothers inneed, and gaininghis
support from those who need thework but can afford to pay. Itworks
wellfor our kids whose messed up teethwould never have found
correction. Didyou ever see a tooth growing outof thecenter of the
roof of the mouth of a child? We did. And now it is back in
place.Amazing.
Again..that handof love reachedout.

CHRISTIANVILLE IS AN EYE CARE CENTER
Itall started with a teenager who captured in his heart a
vision, a longing to reach out to theneedy he found on his visit to
Haiti. Lyn Graves was part of the first"Teen Missions"teamto
Christianville. His hunger to help began under the hot summer sun
while he mixedconcrete and ran fence wire.
Years later Lyn sparked off the torch for an Eye clinic to help
the suffering of our people.Dr. Clifford Brooks, professor at
Indiana University reached for the torch and organized ateam to
descend on Christianville. Armed with a number of the most needed
pieces ofequipment - beautiful equipment, supplies and
professionals the team went to work. Theirfirst visit only excited
them to press forward.
GIVING VISION TO YOUNG AND OLD
/I.
-
WITH EXCELLENT EQUIPMENT AND SKILLED DOCTORS
On their third visit some members returned with the pledge of
ongoing permanentdedication. Other changing team members pledged
their hearts to ongoing fund-raising forthe future. On their third
visit the team expressed their professional but also loving care
to300 patients. Over 60% of the patients were suffering from
serious eye diseases. Theywent out to villagesto visit the blind
and relievetheir suffering from disease even thoughsight was gone.
One blind man was ledto the clinic and returned to his house seeing
fromone eye. These are ourneighbors.. these are North
America'sneighborsand we rememberthe message of Jesus who taught us
to care about our neighbors. It's that loving hand, again!
