SAENA Congratulates Janet Pena, RN!

Janet Pena, President of the SAENA, was recognized as a South Texas Nurse Imagemaker by the Delta Alpha at-Large Chapter of the Sigma Global Excellence National Honor Society and the Texas Nurses Association District 8 at a luncheon on May 11

th.

Janet has demonstrated incredible growth both personally and professionally through her involvement with the ENA on the local, state, and national levels. She participated in an “April Pools” press conference on Water Safety and Injury Prevention. As the San Antonio ENA representative she has been involved with the local South Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC). In addition, she has served as a San Antonio ENA Chapter Director, President – Elect, Chair of numerous committees and is currently the Chapter President.

As one that who “never met a stranger”, networking with peers is extremely important to Janet and she often speaks to other nurses and students about the ENA’s mission and values as well as upcoming educational opportunities. She helps distribute “goody bags” to over 60 Emergency Departments in the area during Emergency Nurses Week in an effort to not only to thank nurses for their dedication in providing safe, quality emergency nursing care but also to help promote the ENA as a professional organization. She believes it is essential to attend continuing education events in order to remain current and encourages others to register and attend with her. At meetings or conferences, she is often seen networking with the speakers regarding their topics and meeting with exhibitors on the latest equipment so she can bring the information back

Janet is a very giving person. She loves animals and is known to “rescue” those who need her. Last year, she led the local chapter, during the TxENA’s ‘Day of Service’, in volunteering to walk dogs at a shelter. She has also volunteered by selling Strawberry Shortcake at the Helotes Cornyval to raise funds for the Safety Why’s Babysitting Course, and teaches “Stop the Bleed” classes. In her spare time, Janet loves to dance and experience new dining options.

We are very proud of Janet Pena and her ability to lead our organization toward success, both now and in the future.

The 8th Edition Trauma Nursing Core Course Is Here!

As of April 2, registered nurses will be able to register for the new and improved Trauma Nursing Core Course. The changes include: virtual learning modules, interactive teaching strategies, timed open-book testing by computer, a new evidence-based provider manual and only one and a half day to complete the course. The new course requires the participant to become very familiar with the TNCC manual and the 8 online modules due to the instructor-led discussion of chapters. No more "death by lectures."

The participant must complete the 8 online modules prior to arriving at the course and will be required to present a certificate of completion to the course director. Testing on day two will include one Trauma Nursing Process skill station; the student will have two opportunities to pass the skill station.

Upon passing the skill station, the student will be provided access to complete the computer based exam portion of the course within the next 7 days. The computer generated test has 50 questions and the participant will have two hours to complete the exam. The student will have two opportunities to pass the exam and the exam will be open book!

The computer generated test has 50 questions and the participant will have two hours to complete the exam. The student will have two opportunities to pass the exam and the exam will be open book!

Once that has been completed, the student will be able to print their 17.65 contact hours and TNCC certificate of completion, which is good for 4 years.

The cost of the course has increased due to the number of instructors required to lead the discussions, the cost of the new TNCC manual and increase in indirect fees to National ENA

San Antonio ENA looks forward to bringing you the latest trauma information and increasing your knowledge to care for the trauma patient.

Watch the SAENA website at www.sanantonioena.org/education/tncc for the dates of the 8th ed. courses and registration information.

Texas Statute: NPA §301.306 and Rule 216.3(5) - January 2006 Effective September 1, 2005, the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) was amended, adding the CNE requirement: Forensic Evidence Collection in Continuing Education. This targeted CNE requirement applies to all nurses practicing in emergency department (ED) settings as their home unit, floating, contracted, or other duties that involve functioning in an ED setting or role. This is a one-time requirement per nurse effective September 1, 2006. This presentation will provide nurses with the knowledge and skills related to care of physical and sexual assault patients so they can accurately and completely assess and document care while obtaining potential evidence using the appropriate chain of evidence based on the requirements of the Texas Board of Nursing.

Learner Objectives:

Discuss the definition of forensics, including examples and applicable laws governing the definition

Describe the components of the primary and focused secondary survey in a forensics patient
