Winter Holidays In addition to our regular read-
ing story, second grade stu-
dents have also been learning
about winter holidays. They
made a wonderful, informa-
tional poster about many of
the popular winter holidays.
You can see it outside of the
ESL classroom. This is what it
says:
Diwali is a Hindu festival,
celebrated in India, for five
days. It is also called the
“Festival of Lights.” During
Diwali, people clean their
homes and open their
windows to welcome Laksmi,
the goddess of wealth.
Hanukkah is an eight day
Jewish celebration. Hanukkah
celebrates the victory of Jewish
soldiers fighting for religious
freedom. A Hanukkah
celebration includes story-
telling, gift giving, special foods,
games, and lighting a candle on
a menorah to symbolize the
eight days the menorah was
glowing in the temple.
St. Lucia On December 13th,
people in Sweden celebrate St.
Lucia. Lucia is the Saint of
Light. On winter nights in
Sweden, the sun shines for
only about one hour. People
celebrate by eating sweet
cakes and lighting candles.
Las Posadas is celebrated in
Mexico for nine days before
Christmas. People remember
the journey of Mary and
Joseph to Bethlehem and their
search for lodging each night.
People celebrate by breaking a
piñata and setting off
fireworks.
Christmas is a religious
holiday celebrated in many
countries. Christmas
celebrates the birth of Jesus
Christ on December 25th.
People celebrate by sending
cards, decorating a tree,
hanging lights, giving gifts, and
sharing a special meal.
Boxing Day is celebrated on
December 26th in Britain,
Australia, New Zealand, and
Canada. People give boxes
filled with money, gifts and
food to the poor and to
people in service jobs. Parents
also give small gifts to their
children.
Kwanzaa is an African
American holiday that occurs
each year from December 26-
January 1. It lasts seven days,
with each day focusing on a
different principle. The
principles are Unity, Self-
Determination, Responsibility,
Supporting Communities,
Purpose, Creativity, and Faith.
Chinese New Year is one of
the most important Chinese
holidays. It is celebrated on the
first day of the lunar year.
People clean their homes to
remove any bad fortune and
welcome good luck. People
celebrate by sharing a special
meal and exchanging red paper
envelopes with money inside.

In this section of the newsletter, parents and teachers and other adults can write messages to ESL students. Students can also write messages
to each other. Read the messages below to find out what’s new at Herberich.
Remember, you can send a message to your child. All you have to do is write your message on the next sheet in this newsletter. Send it back
to me at school with your child. I will type your message in the next newsletter. I hope you will send a message!
Dear ESL Students and Miss Kimberlin,
Sayaka and Haruna love ESL classes. In fall, Sayaka en-
joyed pumpkin carving and cooking omelet. She cooked it
for us at home. It was delicious!!
Haruna enjoyed cooking pumpkin seeds, and taught me
how to cook. Thank you for giving them wonderful
activities!! I’m really happy to join the ESL families!!
