06/: URBAN REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT (CHONGQING, CHINA)The project was on a place called shibati (translates to 18steps) in Chongqing, China. Shibati is a place of cultural strength and my goal was to keep the identity of the neighborhood and the his-tory as well as integrate the surround-ing and expanding modern CBD. Shibati is also a major vertical connection from the lower river part of the city to the upper Business District and public trans-portation. I wanted to enhance that con-nection throughout the site and have a procession through the open market, his-toric district, and CBD.

SHIBATI NEIGHBORHOOD HAS AN UNIQUE IDENTITY THAT IS NOT FOUND ANY-WHERE ELSE IN THE CITY. THE AMOUNT OF STAIRS THAT IS USED FOR MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AS WELL AS THE WELL AS THE LOCATION AND IMPLICATION OF STORES AND SMALL SHOPS. THE NIEHGBORHOOD IS ALSO UNIQUE IN THAT THE BLEND OF COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL IS PRES-ENT.

SHIBATI IS LOCATED NEAR THE CITIES URBAN AND ECO-NOMIC CENTER. IT IS A TRADI-TIONAL DISPLAY OF CHONGQ-ING URBAN PLANNING, LIFE-STYLE, AND MATERIALITY. THE URBAN DESIGN OF THE SITE IS AT A HUMANISTIC SCALE. MANY BUILDINGS ARE NO HIGHER THAN 3-STORY. THIS LIMIT HAS ALLOWED CITI-ZENS TO STAY STRONGLY CONNECTED TO THE GROUND FLOOR.
