Course DescriptionCourse Description

The audit served as a needs assessment. I worked with Human Resources and subject matter experts to complete the remaining front end analysis elements. Four courses were identified. I created one-page course descriptions and updated them throughout the course development process.

All employees who performed the service agreement function and their managers were required to attend the training, however the Port chose not include any examinations in the curriculum.

To ensure that all learning objectives were effectively covered, I created a matrix to map them against the instructional methods and media. This allowed us to identify gaps and modify scenarios or media accordingly.

Before development on this course began, subject matter experts (SMEs) had offered some training consisting of lectures supported by large decks of PowerPoint slides. I changed the format to a workshop with small-group discussion centered around scenarios drawn from real-life situations. The SMEs became coaches: encouraging and challenging the participants, answering their questions and engaging them in informal Q&A. This role suited the SMEs perfectly! They actually enjoyed the experience and the participants benefitted from the workplace simulations and interaction with the SMEs.

All of the policies and procedures would be available online. So, the goal was not to duplicate them in the brochure, but rather provide a takeaway for the participants that would serve as a high-level quick reference guide.

E-Learning PrototypeE-Learning PrototypeI completed the project statement of work on time and under budget, and we used the remaining hours to demonstrate how the material developed for ILT could be repurposed for e-learning. I designed and built the fully functioning prototype in PowerPoint.

Training PlanTraining PlanAn aggressive training plan was necessary to support the exhibit opening date. The docent training plan focused on leading-edge, instructional strategies to promote the rapid acquisition of deep knowledge, including small group discussion, graphic facilitation, docent presentations, and storytelling.

I drew on my own experiences as a supervisor and HR director to create scenarios that illustrated the complexities involved in providing employees with feedback in a way that motivates and empowers.

Participants discussed the scenarios in small groups, and were able to gain support and feedback from their peer managers. The questions were designed to focus the discussion around the learning objectives.

As the facilitator, I debriefed the entire group of participants and re-emphasized the key learnings.

The participants were divided into five teams. Each team was given an assignment to create a design strategy for a learning experience and to present their design to the rest of the class. The strategy had to incorporate the principles presented in the workshop. (The assignments were whimsical so that the participants would focus on the strategy rather than content.)
