A hemiola is where the music feels like it is in 2/4 even though it is written in 3/4.

In Baroque music it was fashionable to use a hemiola when approaching a cadence.

Handel uses a hemiola in ‘And the Glory of the Lord’. It is first heard in bars 9-10 of the introduction

In bars 9-10 you can see that although the music is in 3/4 the chords change every two beat. This is especially clear if you disregard the melody
