Dear Friends,

SIXTY YEARS AGO, concerned members of the North Georgia United Methodist Conference and Emory University began laying the groundwork for what is known today as Wesley Woods. At that time, poor health and lack of mobility isolated the elderly from the greater community and the field of Geriatrics was in its infancy. The founders of Wesley Woods envisioned a place where older adults could find both care and community, a place where their unique needs would be met.

Today, Wesley Woods remains committed to that ideal. From individualized care in our personal care and skilled nursing communities, to high quality low-income housing for the elderly, Wesley Woods addresses both the needs of the individual and the need to be part of a community.

People often ask how Wesley Woods is different from other senior living communities. The answer is complex, but can be reduced to one essential component: mission. Wesley Woods is a mission-driven organization. Our mission–to help people age with grace– is reflected in our staff, our donors and volunteers, and our long-term vision.

Many of our employees have been with the organization for over 10, 20, and even 30 years. This is evident by our employee retention rate of 89%, well above the industry average of 66%. This is particularly important in our assisted living and skilled nursing communities where knowing each individual residents needs is essential to providing person-centered care. From our dining staff, who deliver quality meals and address the varied dietary restrictions of each resident, to the Activity Coordinators, who ensure that our communities are vibrant and engaging—our employees remain focused on our mission.

Like our employees, our donors and volunteers are committed to the vision of our founders. The elderly are our most vulnerable members of our society and providing housing and healthcare solutions for all income levels is a shared responsibility. We are honored to provide a connection point for community members to join us in finding solutions to these very complex problems of aging and eldercare.

For the past 60 years we have been pioneers in geriatric care and housing. We continue to push boundaries and offer innovative solutions that result in high-quality and affordable elder care, accessible to all those in need.

We thank you for your past support and look forward to working together well into the future.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Weber President and CEO Wesley Woods Senior Living

Tracy L. Crump Excutive Director Foundation of Wesley Woods

DELORES ALLIGOOD has called Branan Towers home for the past 14 years. She had been living in Pennsylvania when her husband passed away suddenly. A niece in Atlanta persuaded her to head South to be near family. With limited financial resources, Delores was unsure where to turn for help. Branan Towers offered her a safe affordable apartment and a welcoming community to make it feel like home.

TALMAGE TERRACE resident Johnny Fowler at Athens City Hall.

60 years of helping older adults stay active and engagedJOHNNY FOWLER spent most of his working career with the City of Athens and Clarke County as City Clerk Treasurer and on the Tax Assessor Board. He served on the Board of Wesley Woods and also on the Talmage Terrace and Lanier Gardens Advisory Board. He has been a member and lay leader of Chapelwood United Methodist Church for over 50 years. When it came time to retiring he and his wife Betty chose to live at Talmage Terrace because of its central location and deep ties to the Athens community.

“We love the people here. We had old friends and have

made many new friends. We know this is the place

for us to live.”–JOHNNY FOWLER

ASBURY HARRIS EPWORTH TOWERS resident Melba Carter is a lifelong member of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta.

60 years of serving the spiritual needs of older adultsMELBA CARTER grew up in central Atlanta during a time of great social upheaval. She participated in the civil rights movements during the 1960’s and has witnessed Atlanta’s transformation into an international city. Throughout her lifetime, her faith and Friend-ship Baptist Church has played a central role in her life. She was baptized and married at the church and attended what eventually became Spelman College when it was located in the church basement. At Wesley Woods we recognize and support the spiritual needs of our residents, of all faiths, through Chaplaincy Programming and informal worship gatherings.

60 years of partnership with Emory UniversityEMORY UNIVERSITY HAS BEEN A KEY PARTNER from the earliest days of Wesley Woods, when the University made available property on Clifton Road to serve as a permanent home for Wesley Woods Towers, Budd Terrace, Wesley Woods Outpatient Health Center and later the Geriatric Hospital.

AS PART OF OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH EMORY, our Heroes, Saints and Legends awards dinner supports the research leadership and long-term care at Emory in the area of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Many of Atlanta’s most honored and revered citizens have been honored – Rosalyn Carter, Hank Aaron, Ambassador Andrew Young, Sam Massell and many others. This year we honored Reverend Doctor Don Harp, Dr. Linton Hopkins, Ms. Ingrid Saunders Jones and Mrs. Lonnie Ali. Each of these honorees, and those who came before, have built and cared for their communities. We hope that you will celebrate the tremendous achievements and accomplishments of their generation, and also renew your commitment to helping future generations age with grace.

“When my father was serving on the Wesley Woods Board, I remember him mentioning how proud he was to help others enjoy security and comfort in their later years. His commitment inspired me to continue the family tradition of support for Wesley Woods.” –DAMERON BLACK IV

60 years of partnership with the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church

REVEREND SHARMA LEWIS supervises over 60 churches as District Superintendent for the Atlanta-Decatur Oxford District of North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. Somehow she also finds time to serve on the Advisory Board of Branan Towers, and as Vice-Chair of the Foundation of Wesley Woods Board of Directors. Sharma serves as a connection point between Wesley Woods and the North Georgia Conference, but also stays involved on a personal level. When Branan Towers celebrated its 40th anniversary, Sharma was there line dancing with the residents, sharing her effusive warmth and spirit with everyone in attendance.

WESLEY WOODS IS GRATEFUL for its long-standing partnership with the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, and particularly the annual Mother’s Day Offering collected through its churches, which provides for approximately 25% of the charitable care at Wesley Woods communities each year. We are particularly thankful to the churches listed below whose members and pastors have shown extraordinary commitment to our ministry for older adults.

60 years of employing highly trained and committed staffWESLEY WOODS’ EMPLOYEES are the key to our success. Through these devoted and caring individuals, residents and their families feel the full support of the Wesley Woods community. For that reason, Wesley Woods is honored to be named a 2013 Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence for Employee Engagement. Press Ganey provides ongoing consulting and advisory services nationwide to healthcare providers in all phases of employee engage-ment and performance improvement. Of the 372 facilities and over 235,000 employees surveyed, only a select number of elite organizations who have reached the 95th percentile for employee engagement qualify for this prestigious award.

Wesley Woods’ employee retention rate of 89% is well above the industry average of 66%. Our employees appreciate the service-oriented culture of Wesley Woods and feel that their contributions matter. As one of them said:

“Teamwork is valued at Wesley Woods. I have a service heart and I am here to serve in any capacity. I feel my work is valued and appreciated.”

60 years of connecting volunteers and donors to the older adults we serveDIANE BRYANT has served on the Branan Towers Advisory Board since it was created over 20 years ago. A licensed social worker by training and an active member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Diane has always had an interest in volunteering directly with older adults. She and Edwin Brown have been friends since he moved into Branan Towers. When Diane learned that Edwin had spent his career as a chef across the globe, she enlisted him to help the Glenn Memorial Men’s Group cook for their annual Superbowl party at a local homeless shelter. Volunteers like Diane, whose long-term commitment to the ideals on which we are founded, truly embody the definition of grace.

“I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to serve at Branan Towers. I always come away feeling that I have received more than I have given. I am the one that is blessed by the love that is shown to me by the residents there.” –DIANE BRYANT

THE ROOTS OF WESLEY WOODS trace back to 1954 when leaders of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Emory commu-nity joined together to create a much-need-ed resource for Georgia’s aging citizens. Since those beginnings, Wesley Woods has grown to include residential retirement communities across north Georgia, under the administration of Wesley Woods Senior Living, as well as dedicated geriatric care and multiple specialty care clinics through our partnership with Wesley Woods Center of Emory University.

60 years of fiscal strength and responsible stewardship FINANCIAL STRENGTH AND STEWARDSHIP are prominent among Wesley Woods’ core values. The future of senior services will be built on innovation and compassion, but a solid financial foundation will be required to carry out these services and support our mission. Our financial records are audited by an independent accounting firm each year. In addition, the Finance Committees of both the Foundation of Wesley Woods Board and Wesley Woods Senior Living’s Board provide ongoing financial oversight. Copies of our Audit Report, audited financial statements and IRS 990’s are available upon request.

FOUNDATION OF WESLEY WOODSSINCE ITS INCEPTION, WESLEY WOODS has worked tirelessly to secure philanthropic funds for the operations and capital needs of its retirement communities. In place since 1984, The Foundation of Wesley Woods, continues those efforts and also supports specific programs, geriatric health research and charitable care needs for our residents whose assets have been consumed by medical bills or simply by outliving their resources. The Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that all older adults in their care- regardless of their income level, faith, race, nationality, disability or gender- receive the attention and services they need to age with grace.

Charitable Care for ResidentsMore than 1/3 of the older adults living in our residential communities have incomes below the poverty level, and over 75% require financial assistance. Charitable giving allows our residents to stay in their apartments and receive nutritious meals if they have outlived their savings.

Capital Investment in Our CommunitiesFour of our communities are nearing 40 years of age and our aging infrastructure is in constant need of repair and refurbishment. The cost of these upgrades can be staggering. Capital improve-ments at our facilities ensure that our communities are attractive and safe for our residents.

Resident Programs and ServicesHealth and Wellness Programming at our communities provides a wide range of recreational and fitness programming in addition to high-quality preventative healthcare. These programs help our lowest-income older adults live independently for longer, with less frequent visits to the emergency room for chronic illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure. In addition, the Foundation also funds Chaplaincy programs to provide pastoral care for all faiths at our communities.

Geriatric Medical ResearchWe are proud to play an important role in Emory University’s ongoing work to find ways to treat, cure, or prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Using proceeds from our Heroes, Saints and Legends event, we are privileged to be working with physicians and scientists who are world leaders in their fields, and we thank you for partnering with us to harness their talents to make these debilitating diseases a thing of the past.
