Hello dear ladies of Helping Hands.

your side dishes accordingly. Things that is tasty with those
meats. It is summer so try to go "light and cool". I will also have
the rolls so you that want sandwiches will have that, so you don't

The Next Raffle Quilt: We have a pattern and a plan! The pattern is similar to our current Raffle Quilt. The tickets for it are selling really well,
so why mess with success! But it is created by two different blocks and it will be in patriotic colors,
so it should have a different look.
THE PATTERN: See picture on right.
THE PLAN: The plan is to collect reds, blues, and creams/whites from guild members over the summer
months and then the committee will get back together to make the blocks and the quilt top in the fall.
So, please bring any donations of fabric to the August meeting. Fat quarters or yardage. Any fabric
not used in the raffle quilt will be used in some other way to benefit the guild.
Thanks, ML Kaczka and the Raffle Quilt Committee

The avid quilter will tell you if you don’t pay attention when using an iron on your quilt block or finished quilt
top you could ruin all your hard work. It is important to be alert when doing any pressing during your patchwork
and appliqué quilting. Pressing is a different process than ironing. In ironing you glide your iron across the
fabric yardage to remove wrinkles and creases. When pressing patchwork you lift and press the iron on the area
of interest, to flatten a seam either open or to one side.
Some gentle nudging of the seam allowance to one side with the iron is acceptable. Please stop using the iron
on your finished patchwork as an ice scraper; you’re not removing ice from a windshield!
There are some quilters who choose to use steam in pressing, others prefer a dry iron and spritz with water, or spray sizing/
starch. Whatever is your method remember to set the iron temperature to the fabric content and don’t scorch the fabric trying
to dry it out! Check the instructions with fusibles; each has its own heat settings and proper amount of time to apply heat. Often
small patchwork pieces and pieces with bias edges can be controlled better if stiffened, it is better to do this prior to cutting the
patchwork pieces.
There are many times when you can use your finger nail or small wooden tool to press the seam allowance and continue to sew the
patchwork until you have finished a unit in the design, such as ½ square triangles, 4 patch and 9 patch squares, paper piecing and
long skinny star points.
The opportunity to check your sewing is when you are pressing. Check for loose threads that are caught in the seam allowance
and show on the right side of the patchwork, inspect your seam allowance, are they ¼” consistently? When sewing a long seam such
as a border to the quilt top or sashings to quilt blocks, are the raw edges even, does it lay flat with no extra fullness? Inspect
your work from the front also; are the seams flat with no puckers or creases? Is the block the proper size!
Magazine editors and pattern makers often will give suggestions where to press the seam allowances. It can also be your choice
which direction to press the seam allowances. Does it show less shadow if pressed under the darker fabric? Is there less bulk in an
intersection if the seam allowances are pressed open? What if you spin them to equalize the patch; 4 patch intersections and the
center of star points? Is there a place on the quilt that has less resistance; under borders and sashings often make it smoother.
This is all a matter of preference, no one way works for every block.
You can streamline the process of pressing by chain piecing all matching units and carrying them to the ironing board joined
together and pressing uniformly prior to snipping the joining threads. I then like to stack the units/ blocks so all face the same
direction. This gives me the opportunity to position them for the next step without handling them again and keeping track of how
many pieces by separating into piles of 10 or what works for the quilt.
Our quiltmaking is a labor of love; we do our best to have the finished product meet our expectations. It is so easy to take the
extra steps to assure the desired outcome. Respectfully submitted, Marti Chamberlain
