-About the PhotographerReal Name: Helmut NeustaedterBorn in: Berlin October 31, 1920- grew up in privileged circumstances in the home of his wealthy button-manufacturer father.- He attended the city's American School, but was a bad student and was expelled when his fascination

with photography, sparked by a camera bought when he was 12, overshadowed his interest in class.- After leaving school in 1936, the young Helmut worked as an apprentice to top photographer Elsie

Simon, known as Yva, a job he held until he was forced to flee after the start of Adolf Hitler's vicious pogroms against German Jews two years later.

After briefly being interned as a German citizen, he later joined the Australian army and in 1948 married actress June Brunell, who would remain his partner for more than 50 years until his death

– this is where he changed his name to Newton, opened a small photo studio in Melbourne, and began contributing fashion photos to French Vogue in 1961.

Over the years, Newton also contributed to magazines such as Playboy, Queen, Nova, Marie-Claire, Elle, and the American, Italian and German editions of Vogue -- his stark and provocative style setting a new industry standard.

-His workI think Helmut’s work contrasts his childhood dramatically. Escaping from the historical events of the Nazis would have been incredibly hard for the 18-year-old boy; especially immigrating to a completely different country and having to learn a new language. Newton’s work evolves mostly around excessive nudity and powerful, glamorous women.

Helmut Newton- Barbie trademarkHelmut Newton has become an inspiration for many artists and photographers, by introducing ‘Barbie’ dolls into the industry as an art form. When collecting my data, the audience all had incredibly different and opinionated views on the concept of Barbie, with some finding it controversial, childish or humorous.

Photograph One:The first photograph is in fact a replica of his own work. The original image is shown in the bottom left hand corner which is fairly similar to the Barbie approach. I think the recreation appears less powerful due to the positioning of the women in contrast to the Barbie; as well as the sharp eye contact and the emotion the model is expressing.

Photograph Two:This is one of the most famous replicas of Man Ray’s work. In my opinion, the image is incredibly similar to the original painting, which could cause incredibly controversy as a reenactment.
