'" * * * DO NOT REIEASE PRIOR TO JAN. 4 am A ,,/' Southern Californials top prep football performer for the 1967 season and the Colonists placed four of their "AAAA" ClF Division athletes on the first team" as members of All-Southem california Board of Athletics met at Helms Hall to make their annual all-star team selections. Fitzpatrick, who started slowly in 1967 for the Clare Van Hoorebeke-coached eleven due to an untested knee operated on at the close of the 1966 season, won out in Player of the Year balloting over several other first-team backfield members. The most notable of these being Anaheimls sophomore QB whiz, George Fraser. Tom Fitzpatrick, Anaheim Highls "bread-tnt-butter" man over the past two seasons, performed at fullback on offense and linebacker on defense for the "AAAA" CIF Division champions this past season. Tom who suffered knee trouble last year and suffered through an in-between-season operation( started slowly in 1967. For the year, Tom carried 92 times for 464 yards (5-yard avg.) and seven touchdowns. He also com- pleted 10 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns. This marked the first ClF title for coach Van Hoorebeke and his Anaheim Col- onists. They finished in the runner-up spot to E1 Rancho last year" losing to the Dons 35-14 in the title decider. Although finishing second .to santa Ana in the tough Sunset League, Anaheim came back to sweep through the playoffs and soundly defeat the saints 27-6. On the way to the title Anaheim defeated Long Beach (35-13), El Rancho (28-14), Santa Barbara (42-7), before the decider with Santa Ana. For having been named as the top Southland prep player for 1967, Tom Fitz- patrick will be honore.d at Helms Hall on saturday moming" January 20th at the 31st annual All-80uthern California Board of Football awards program. Tom will receive a special medallion award for being recognized as the season's best prep" along with a beautiful framed scroll. Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke will also be honored with a silver tumbler, awarded each season the the championship coach. The AMF-VOIT Rubber Corporation of Los Angeles, as it has so kindly.done overthe past 15 years, will again present special Voit miniature footballs to the boysnam'3d for All-Southern California football team honors. Loyd Tutor and Mell Barton,who have so kindly taken part in recognizing the outstanding prep football players
throughout the Southland for the past 15 years, will take part in the presentationsto the honored athletes.
This marks the 31st year that All-Southern California Board of Football hasselected players for all-star team honors and that the Helms Athletic Foundation inturn has presented scroll and medal awards to the honored players. This year's program will be held at Helms Hall on Saturday morning, January 20th, at 10:30 a.m.

Helms Athletic Foundation IS AU-80uthern California Board of Football met at HelmsHall to make their annual prep gridiron all-star team picks. As was the case lastyear, two teams have been selected in each division.
Brick, a phenomenal receiver for Mayfair High School which finished 2nd inthe Suburban League to champion La Serna, scored 17 touchdowns this past seasone Hecaught 41 passes for 987 yards, averaging 23-yards per reception. Bain was an outstanding defensive back, as evidenced by his being named on the all-Suburban Loopdefensive eleven the past two seasons. He was also ,the leaguels MVP winne:",. Brickwas Nayfair's ptmter, averaging 30.5 yards on 36 boots.
Bob Davidson, 10•.3-seo. halfback for Tri-valley League champion Santa Ynez,was unanimous choice of the Helms Board for Player of the Year laurels in the "ASmall School" Division. Primarily a defensive back prior to this season, Davidsonmade the switch to offense with a vengeance this semester. He rolled for 1,276 yardson 207 carries and a 6.2-yard avg. and 23 touchdowna•••20 rushing. Bob had six TDscalled back during the year. He punted eight times for a 30.8 avg. and returnedfour lucksoff for 93 yards and a 23.3 avg. santa Inez finished the seaSOl. with a9-1-1 record, the tie coming at the hands of Morro Bay early in the year. The Pirates ,. loss came at the hands of st. Genevieve in the semi-finals of the playoffs,
7-6. Both Bain Brick and Bob Davidson will be recipients of the Helms medallionaward, which goes annually to those players named for Player of the Year recognition.Medallions will be presented to these two boys at the 31st annual All-southern California Board of Football Awards Program at Helms Hall on saturday morning, Jan. 20that 10:30 a.m. At this time, all boys named for all-star team recognition will receivetheir scroll awards from Helms Board members, as well as from collegiate coaches andhonored guests from the field of football who will be on hand to pay special tributeto the top prep athletes of 1967.
Champions in the various divisions of the elF for 1967 are as follows: "MA"Division•••ra Serna- defeating Ganesha (31-7), Bellflower (15-0)" Excelsior (13-7)and Temple City (33-7): "AA" Division••• Royal Oak - defeating Brawley (32-19), ElCentro (39-0) and Alta Loma(3.3-o): "Aft Division••• Beaumont - defeating Yucaipa (21-7)Katella (7-7••lst downs) and st. Genevieve (7-0): "Small School" ••• Calipatria andParaclete were named co-champions, as the title game ended in a 7-7 tie. Calipatriadefeated Eagle ~It. (13-0) and Aquinas (14-12), while Paraclete whipped Apple Valley(19-14) and Desert (14-13) before they struggled to a 7-7 co-championship.
Championship coaches, each of whom will receive a special silver tumbler'award for having coached their teams to CIF Division titles, are Clare Van HoorebAke(Anaheim), Harry Robinson (La Serna), John Zinda (Royal Oak), Don Smith (Beaumort)~,Joe Slavin (paraclete) and Bruce Dempsey (Calipatria).
There is only one repeater on the honor teams in both divisions o ChrisHigby, diminutive scatback for ~atella High School, was a second-team choice in t66.
This marks the 31st year that All-Southern California Board of Athletics,through the sponsorship of Helms Athletic Foundation, has selected all-star prepfootball teams. Each year, players named for honors are presented framed scrollawards, while Players of the Year receive medallions. All selections made by theHelms Board are on file in the Helms Hall Ubrary.

was named Los Angeles Ci ty High School Football Player of the Year forthe 1967 season as members of All-Los Angeles City Board of Footballmet at Helms Hall to make their annual gridiron selections. A senior,Briner led Gardena to the Marine League title in six games and to thesemi-finals of the city playoffs, before dropping a 19-14 decision toWestern Loop titlist Westchester.
Greg Briner, who obliterated all of Steve Sogge1s passing marksat Gardena over the past three seasons, is a June-graduating seniorwho stands 5-11 and weighs 181 pounds. He completed 127 of 187 aerials during the current prep grid campaign, for a fantastic 69 percent completion mark. 'Out ot 187 throws, Greg had only three intercepted while accumulating 2,296 yards and 24 touchdowns. Greg rushedfor 302 yards in 87 carries and scored eight TOs. He caught four passes for 44 yards, also during the season, which gave him a grand totalof 2.642 yards in total offense and 32 touchdowns. Southern League Champion Dorsey High placed three first team performerson both the offense and defense, as All-Los Angeles City Board of Footballmade its annual prep selections at Helms Hall last week. Dorsey's ErickDavis and L.A. High's Vernell McDaniels were choices as CO-Players of theYear.
Dorsey nosed out TN'ashington for the loop crown, its 4-0 record bettering the Generals' 3-1 mark. Fremont, Manual Arts and L.A. wound up in athree-way tie for third with identical 1-3 records o Dorsey was shut out inthe first round of the city playoffs, 23-0 by San Fernando
Just two players repeated off last yea.rts honor teams., Doug Bozemanand Hilla~ Shockley were first and second team members respectively lastyear. Co-Players of the Year Erick Davis and Vernell MCDaniels will berecipients of the Helms medallion award, recognizing them for their 1967achievements, at the 31st annual All-Southern California Board of Footballawards program to be held at Helms Hall on Saturday, January 20th.
All players named for all-league honors will receive special Helmsscrolls, to be presented at the schools by the coaches.
All-Los Angeles City Board of Football members who took part in 1967selections are Bob Cox, Tom Coulter, Iv1arshall Klein, Gary ''fright, Dave Lopez,Mike waldner, Wayne Wilson and \\fally ~vilson. The Helms Board has been making all-league selections in Los Angeles since 1937.

Polytechnic Highls East-valley League Champions placed two performers onthe 1967 all-star offensive unit and four on the defensive eleven, includingPlayer of the Year and star linebacker Joe Mellado, as members of Helms AthleticFoundation IS All-Los Angeles City Board of Football met at Helms Hall to maketheir annual grid selections.
Nellado, who coach Al Richards praises as ••••• 'Une of the best linebackersin the city as well as starting tight end. Is excellent on pass coverage andhas good range in filling in. He t s the hardest hitter on the team. II
Poly, winner of its league title with a 3-·0-1 record, was followed by Grant(3-1), Van Nuys (2-1-1), Verdugo Hills (1~3) and North Hollywood (0-4). Polywhipped South Gate 28-20 in the first round of the playoffs and then dropped itsnext game to San Fernando, 35-7.
Cliff Reynolds and Al Gee wound up tied for the league scoring crown with66 points, which gave them a tie for 6th among city scorers. Cliff was on theleague second team last year and is one of four repeaters from last year.
Eric Shirley, Poly's remarkable kicking specialist who accounted for fivefield goals and 15 of 17 PATs, was selected as a kicking specialist on thisyear's team. Eric also kicked off and punted for Poly.
All players named for East Valley League honors will receive Helms scrollawards which will be forwarded to the schools for presentation. Player of theYear Mellado will receive his medallion award at Helms Hall on Saturday, January20th at the 31st annual Board of Football awards ~~~.~~~~
