Nothing on Earth so beautiful as the final haul on Halloween night. There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls. At first cock-crow the ghosts must go Back to their quiet graves below. The oldest and strongest emo-

tion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. Where there is no imagination there is no horror. One need not be a chamber to be haunted. One need not be a house. The brain has corridors surpassing. Material place. Men say that in this midnight hour, the disembodied have power, to wander as it liketh them, by wizard oak and fairy stream. Witch and ghost make merry on this last of dear

October's days. Shadows of a thousand years rise again unseen, voices whisper in the trees. Tonight is Halloween! Hark! Hark to the wind! 'Tis the night, they say, when all souls come back from the far away. The dead, forgoen this many a day! Clothes make a statement. Costumes tell a story. There is something haunting in the light of the moon; it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul, and something of its inconceivable mystery. Fear is nature's warning signal to get busy.

Pixie, kobold, elf, and sprite,, All are on their rounds tonight; In the wan moon's silver ray, Thrives their helter-skelter play. Be wary then, best safety lies in fear. Raise your spirits, cook up some ghost stories, and make eerie looking Jack-o-Lanterns. Halloween is fun for grown ups and kids alike. Especially when you throw a bizarre Halloween party. One, two. Red's calling for you. Three, four. Better lock your door. Five, six. Grab your crucifix. Seven, eight. Gonna stay up late. Nine, ten. Never sleep again. I'm gonna eat your brains, and gain your knowledge. It's so sweet. He looks just like a little entrée. Haven't you noticed how nothing in this house seems to move until you look away and then you just... catch something out of the corner of your eye? That's not because there are most ghosts here then other places,

mind you. It's just that people who live here about are strangely aware of them. You see, day and night, year in, year out, they listen to the pound and stir of the waves. There's life and death in that restless

sound. And eternity too. Sometimes the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead.. You like dinner! Blah, blah, vampire emergency blah... Be afraid. Be very afraid. a I ate his liver with some fava beans and a fine Chianti. You are too precious for words, why I could just... eat you alive! Hi! I'm Chucky. Want to play? I see dead people. You know, it's Hal-

loween. I guess everyone is entitled to one good scare, huh? You can't kill the Boogey man. I'm a messenger of God. You're doomed if you stay here. This

place is cursed. Cursed... It's got a death curse! Death has come to your little town, Sheriff. You can either ignore it, or you can help me to stop it. Theintru-dersareleaving,butotherswillcome.Sometimeswe'llsensethem.Othertimes,wewon't.As spirits roam the neighborhoods at

night, Let loose upon the Earth till it be light... After eating chocolate you feel godlike, as though you can conquer enemies, lead armies, entice lovers. Those seemingly interminable dark walks

between houses, long before street-lit safety became an issue, were more adrenalizing than the mountains of candy filling the sack. Sadly Halloween, with

our good-natured attempts to protect the little ones, from the increasingly dangerous traffic and increasingly sick adults, has become an utter bore. What fearful

shapes and shadows beset his path, amidst the dim and ghastly glare of a snowy night! With what wistful look did he eye every trembling ray of light streaming across the waste fields from some distant window!

How often was he appalled by some shrub covered with snow, which, like a sheeted specter, beset his very path! How often did he shrink with curdling awe at the sound of his own steps on the frosty crust beneath

his feet; and dread to look over his shoulder, lest he should behold some uncouth being tramping close behind him! and how often was he thrown into complete dismay by some rushing blast, howling among the trees,

in the idea that it was the Galloping Hessian on one of his nightly scouring! I saw thousands of pumpkins last night Come floating in on the tide, jumping up against the rocks and rolling up on the beaches, it must be Halloween in the sea. Auld

Daddy Darkness creeps frae his hole, Black as a blackamoor, blin' as a mole.... A thousand fearful images and dire suggestions glance along the mind

when it is moody and discontented with itself. Command them to stand and show themselves, and you presently assert the power of reason over imagination.
