ScienceGo on a minibeast hunt

Spring is well and truly kicking in now, and the warmer weather will bring lots of creepy crawlies out. So get out in the fresh air and take a closer look at your garden or local park. You'll soon notice it's teeming with wildlife! Can you find...• different plants flowers and trees• a worm after a spring shower• a bumblebee looking for nectar• a spotty ladybird exploring the grass• a butterfly basking in the sunshine?

Make a loo roll bird feederThis is messy fun you will love to get stuck into. And it will help you learn about the birds in your neighbourhood. You can make this simple feeder with items you probably already have at home:Smother a cardboard tube in peanut butter (no added salt and sugar versions are suitable for birds).Roll it in bird seed and thread some string through the hole.Tie it up in your garden where birds will feel safe eating.

Make natural art

Art and crafts is a popular way to keep you busy. To mix things up, put the pencils and crayons to one side and look for natural art materials instead. Collect fallen leaves, petals and sticks and use them to make a picture or sculpture. Please make sure you don't pick wildflowers, however, as they are important for wildlife and some are protected by law.You could even use the objects as 'stampers' or paintbrushes - dipping them in paint and rolling, brushing or stamping them on paper to create interesting patterns and effects.

Fun home learning for whole family:

• Build a Garden Labyrinth

Outline a path in your backyard using stones, twigs, or un-mowed grass. Simple patterns can be found on the Internet or in books. Little kids especially will love following the twists and turns of your creation.

• Do Magic Tricks

For a unique family activity, look up magic tricks on YouTube and put on a show for little kids. You can also teach an older child some tricks he can perform in front of the whole family.

• Collect Leaves for Artwork

Take a walk in your backyard or a secluded local park, and have your children collect fallen leaves. Once you get home, lay the leaves on paper and rub the side of a crayon over it, creating a

silhouette. You can also paint the leaves and use them as homemade stamps.

• Create a Dress-Up Box

On a rainy day, weed out unwanted dresses, hats, shoes, and costume jewelry from your closets. Your kids will love playing dress-up with the items. Mom and Dad can even join the fun in this indoor family activity.

Fun home learning for whole family:

This is what I would like to share about my lockdown.

We don’t have a garden or a balcony so we enjoy our daily walks to a local park. One warm sunny morning I took pictures of these beautiful daisies. The following day it was gloomy and cloudy and on

the same spot I found these flowers.

So I’ve observed that the petals on daisies are pink

when they are not in bloom.

What changes have you observed in nature?

This is my wee Art project. I add a tower to my castle as another toilet or kitchen roll tube becomes available. How far can I go?
