“our literature… is deep, fresh and original, punch-ing far above its weight in awards and world sales.” Jackie French
Jackie French, Senior Australian of the Year 2015, and best-selling author of over 170 books, is the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014 – 2015.
This year, Jackie is a special guest of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and will be participating in a dynamic international Laureate program of events at the Second International Laureate Summit during the Fair:• Sunday afternoon – private Laureate function• Monday – Growing the Laureate movement – by invitation• Tuesday–OfficialSummit–forgeneraladmission• Wednesday - Australian Stand Party, talk by Jackie, by invitation
Jackie is dyslexic and a strong advocate for the right of ALL children to be taught to read with the methods best suited to them.
‘Every child can learn to read. Every child must learn to read, or they are cut off from jobs, social life, social media, and the written heritage of humanity.’– Jackie French
Jackie French estimates that in 2014 she spoke to about 60,000 young people in person and by video link, School of the Air, internet chat rooms, speaker phone, email and letters.
In January, the Australian Children’s Laureate team launched a ‘Reading Calendar’ for 2015, a joint work by Jackie French, Justine Alltimes, illustrator Ann James and designer Judy Watson, encouraging children to share, create and enjoy stories together. For March’s theme, Navigate a Story, we can follow Jackie’s trip to the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, and her participation in the second International Children’s Laureate Summit, live through the Laureate blog and social media.
The Australian Children’s Literature Alliance would like to thank the following sponsors for enabling this tour to happen:
The Australia Council for the Arts; Books Illustrated; Bolinda Au-dio Borrow Box Library; Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund; the Australian Publishers Association Children’s Publishers Commit-
tee; and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Committee.

Reading Australia is a hub for resources, written by teachers for teachers, to bring Aussie stories to life in the classroom. Linked to the curriculum, the resources provide step-by-step activities and tasks, some with supporting multimedia materials.
The not-for-profit Copyright Agency produced Reading Australia in partnership with the major Australian English educator associations, to create a resource for teachers of such high quality it makes a compelling case to choose Australian texts, to share our nation’s stories and to back our authors.
What teachers say about Reading Australia:
“Well written units of work and great choices of texts.”
“I have taught a book I might not otherwise have picked up - great resource!”
“...our literature… is deep, fresh and original, punch-ing far above its weight in awards and world sales.” Jackie French interviewed in Kids Book Review
STORY BOX LIBRARY is Australia’s favourite online resource that features the best Australian children’s stories, read by some of the country’s most engaging and entertaining storytellers.
Collaborating with Australia’s leading publishers, Story Box Library is designed
and illustrators, whilst exposing children to the traditional art of storytelling.
Our stories are a little bit cheeky, a little bit charming and a whole lot of fun!
