food and drink outlets, children’s entertainment, camping facilities and a tent hotel. Splashy Fen has something for everyone; in fact there’s nothing else in South Africa quite like it!
The festival is held on the farm Splashy Fen, which is situated 19kms from Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains. The focus of the music in the early years was folk and light folk rock, as well as black music styles such as mbaqanga and iscathamiya.
In the past few years the focus has broadened to include mainstream and alternative rock and pop, including some of the country’s most popular cur-rent acts. Only genuine original music is played at Splashy Fen, and this has played a part in creating a fusion of styles and cultures and a feeling of shared co-existence between previously disparate artists.
Splashy has thus played an important role in the shaping of an authentic South African contempo-rary music culture.Website: http://www.splashyfen.co.za/

6 / Hello Durban
LOCAL FOODS
BUNNY CHOWOne bite and you’ll understand why, when ordering a “bunny,” it’s best to add “and a beer.” Durban’s ubiquitous street food starts innocently enough with a square loaf of soft, white bread. Then the middle is scooped out, replaced with lip-searing spicy curry (mutton, prawn, chicken, or vegetarian). It’s hot, messy, and impossible to eat without using both hands and lots of napkins. The beer is there to douse your tongue long enough to take a second bite. A quarter-loaf bunny is enough for lunch or a hearty snack. Two old-school Durban curry spots known for their bunnies are the Britannia Hotel and Goundens Restaurant and Take Away.
FRESH SARDINES ON TOASTSometime between May and July (most years), swirling, silvery sardines by the millions migrate north along the KwaZulu-Natal coast following a cold ocean current. The Sardine Run, billed as “The Greatest Shoal on Earth,” launches a frenzy of fishing and feeding. Dolphin pods herd the sardines into tight packs, making it easy for seabirds, sharks, and seals to pursue and feast on the swimming buffet. Fishermen sell their shares of the haul at the fish markets on Wilson’s Wharf, where the waterfront pubs and restaurants also peddle fresh sardine dishes. Keep it simple and local by ordering a Durban favorite—fresh sardines on toast with onions.
SHISANYAMATranslated literally, this Zulu term for barbecu-ing (“burn the meat”) doesn’t sound particularly appetizing. Forget the name and focus on the taste—tender, hot, and flavorful. South Africans love to barbecue, or braai, and if you aren’t invited over for some backyard braaiing, visit a local township shisanyama, where you can choose your own boerewors (farmer’s sausage), steak, chops, or chicken, and carry it outside to the grill. Nembula’s in Empangeni and Max’s Lifestyle in Umlaziare are legendary hot spots, and not just for the flavorful meat. Accompanying the braai and cold beer are everything from weekend dance parties to compli-mentary car washes.
LOCAL BREWSThe Western Cape is wine country, but in KwaZu-lu-Natal the libation of choice is locally brewed beer. Several commercial and craft breweries in the province are stops along Tourism KZN’s fledg-ling beer or brew route. Most offer public tours (advance reservations required), and some, like artisanal brewers Porcupine Quill Micro Brewery and Deli in the Valley of 1000 Hills and Durban’s Unity Brasserie and Bar, pair the house beer with light fare. Visit Porcupine for Karoo Red Ale and Unity for the signature Cowbell pilsner, or stop in at any pub to order a pint of Shongweni Brewery’s Robson’s Pale Ale or Robson’s East Coast Ale.
ZULU CUISINEDurban is the largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, the Zulu Kingdom, yet typical tourist itineraries rarely include sampling any Zulu cuisine. Some of the bigger resorts and casinos offer a multicourse prix-fixe menu of Zulu fare featuring traditional selections like mogodu (tripe), amadumbi (Zulu potatoes), and pap (hard maize porridge). More authentic Zulu foods are found outside of the city—west in the more rural sections of the Valley of 1000 Hills and north in Eshowe. Options range from “walkie-talkies” (boiled chicken feet) hawked at informal markets to the grilled crocodile steaks featured at pheZulu Safari Park’s Croctilians Restaurant.
BOMBAY CRUSHPepto-Bismol pink and super sweet, South Asia’s traditional falooda is South Africa’s (in Durban, at least) Bombay Crush. The cool concoction is a frothy blend of rose-coloredRoohAfza syrup, milk, and tukmaria (basil) seeds topped with a couple of dollops of vanilla ice cream. Durban’s Indian Muslims traditionally drink the filling Crush during Ramadan, but the creamy shake is available any time of the year at most of the city’s curry restau-rants. Look for the bright-pink drink on menus in
the historic Indian district around Dr Yusuf Dadoo (Grey) and Bertha Mkhize (Victoria) Streets.
TASTES OF INDIABunny chow is Durban’s most celebrated snack, but don’t let your gastronomical tour of the city’s Indian cuisine stop there. From casual curry dens to palatial waterfront restaurants, and from North Indian tandoori to Goan seafood specialties, there’s an Indian menu to fit every palate and price point. Along the Golden Mile, try Jaipur Palace in Durban North, Vintage India in Morningside, and The Jewel of India in the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel. For an elegant North Indian dining experience, head north to Kashmir on the Dolphin Coast in Umhlanga.
SAMOOSASNo matter how you spell it, Durban’s version of the Indian samosa is the appetizer of choice. The crispy, triangular-shaped pastries typically are stuffed with a spicy minced blend of chopped onions, chillies, and either lamb, fish, potato, or veggies. If you try only one, make it a Cape Malay sweet potato samoosa with chutney. A staple at most of the city’s Indian restaurants, samoosas are a true crossover item appearing on pub, casual, and fine-dining menus across Durban. One of the more decadent variations is at the Cargo Hold Restaurant, where the dessert cart includes a banana fudge samoosa paired with cheesecake and ice cream.
The diversity of South Africa provides a sensual experience of tastes that is the outcome of outstanding conditions like no other place on the planet. Being located on the tip of the African continent does not only mean that we enjoy an endless supply of fresh fish and sea food, but it multiples itself with as being lucky to be located in the area where two mighty oceans meets: the Atlantic with its cold currents and the Indian ocean with its warm, full of life waters.
Inland much more currents came together to serve with a handful of flavours: local tastes include all the historic dishes of the kingdoms and tribes that evolved into modern South Africa next to the new world dishes that the European immigrants brought with them over centuries of falling in love and set-tling on this shores. All of those are now served and combined with flavors and aromas of the influential Indian community that successfully dispersed its' spices all over.

UMGENI RIVER BIRD PARK
Designed and built by Dr. Alan Abrey in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park was opened in April 1984. The park was owned private-ly by a group of bird lovers who wanted to educate others about birds from around the world. It was run by Alan Abrey until his retirement in 1997, and in those years the artwork for the park (guidebook illustrations, park maps, and so forth) were done by his daughter Robyn Abrey.
Set in a land filled and landscaped former quarry, the park includes several natural waterfalls. Paths for visitors wind through three aviaries and past other aviaries and open exhibits. A viewing window in the nursery lets visitors see how the birds are hatched and raised. Construction of the Free Flight Bird Show arena was started in 1995, with the venue staging its first show in 1996.
The Free Flight Bird Show, opened in 1996, fea-tures birds from North and South America, Africa,
Indonesia, and Australia, and emphasizes conserva-tion. Birds in the show includes a owls, cranes, hornbills, macaws, kookaburras, toucans, vultures, in an open air auditorium. The show is staged twice daily, weather permitting.
The park breeds 17 of the 24 threatened bird spe-cies in its collection. The park is involves with the South Africa Crane Working Group in breeding and then releasing the Wattled Crane. The birds are hand-reared using a glove puppet, and are then released near Dullstroom. Wattled cranes are listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, and there are only about 8000 in the wild.

MITCHELL PARK ZOO
Every day of the year could feel like a holiday, especially if you make your way to Mitchell Park. Named after Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell, the park was established in the early half of the previews century as an ostrich farm. That venture did not go as well as planned, so it was transformed into a zoo instead.Back then, a large variety of animals, including lions, leopards, crocodiles and many varieties of bird, occupied a large part of the zoo. The remain-der consisted of beautifully landscaped gardens. One of the most memorable animals at the zoo at the time was Nellie, an Indian elephant.
Today Mitchell Park has a whole host of small animals and birds for you to visit, including crocodiles, buck, raccoons, cranes, flamingoes, wallabies, monkeys and tortoises. There is a walk-through aviary that allows you to get close-up views of many beautiful bird varieties.A sand-filled playground allows small children to enjoy playing on jungle gyms, swings, slides and other equipment. Paraplegic facilities make sure that even physically challenged visitors have a great time. While you play, mom can relax and enjoy tea or a meal at the Blue Zoo tea garden, nestled among trees and attractive flowerbeds.Carefully tended lawns are perfect for family pic-nics, and even skottle braais are allowed. Mitchell Park’s staff members take an interest in educating children on the animal and plant worlds. They teach visitors how to preserve our natural wonders so that future generations may also enjoy them.

The Durban System, as it was known, became the blueprint for apartheid in later years. The Kwa-Muhle Museum has many displays documenting the Durban System including a very illuminating one on just how the municipality managed to get the system to pay for itself through a municipal monopoly of brewing and selling sorghum beer.
Another display concerns the Cato Manor riots which were largely the result of that monopoly.

The Wood’s Cycad species is named for founding Durban Botanic Gardens curator and botanist John Medley Wood, who, in 1895, discovered a single, surviving cycad plant in a Zululand forest. Walking
through the Gardens’s cycad forest is a bit like stepping onto the set of Jurassic Park. No dinosaurs here, but the pink-backed pelicans sitting in the trees do look eerily like pterodactyls.

Durban’s CBD in partnership with Metro Police, South African Police (SAP) and Tourist Protection Unit, have made a considerable effort to safeguard tourists against crime. Surveillance cameras and improved lighting have been installed on the beachfront, and security guards watch over most shopping centres and large businesses. Nonetheless, visitors to our city should take the sensible precau-tions they would in any major city. Avoid carrying large sums of money,
