Traditional tanged insert designs did not meet the thin envelope dimensions of the metal substrate due to the potential for surface damage during the tang break-off step. Customer Requirements • Provide a wire insert assembly in thin parent material • No surface damage or imperfections • No foreign object contamination Solutions Emhart proposed the use of a Heli-Coil ® Tangless ® insert which eliminated the additional material thickness required for proper tang break-off. Eliminating the tang break-off requirement allowed the customer to utilize the thin material required for the application with no concern of “dimpling” or break-out of the surface. The use of Tangless ® inserts also eliminated the concern of any stray tangs remaining in the system as foreign debris.
