II. Becoming Fools (vss. 21-23)

Ill. Self-Indulgence (vss. 24-27)

AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED’ ::::::::::::

Overcoming TemptationBY TED CUNNINGHAM

IT WAS EASY FOR ME TO STAY AWAY FROM SNACK-SIZE CANDY

bars. But when they came out with the minis, I was in trouble. How can something so small be bad for you? After I have fiveor six empty wrappers in my pocket, I am reminded of self-control—and my lack of it.

Self-control is the discipline of delaying impulse or gratification for a greater purpose. We are trading something in thehere and now for something bigger and better in the future.

We teach our children self-control when we make them eattheir vegetables before dessert. \X7e implore our teens to practiceself-control for several years after puberty in order to honormarriage (Hebrews 13:4). Yet the greatest reason believerspractice self-control is because we choose Christ over the world(Mark 8:36-37).

In order to develop self-control, we must be honest withourselves about our weaknesses. Some of us are tempted byovereating, others by greed or gossip. By being aware of whattempts us, we can take our struggles to God. He empowers us toovercome temptation.

When teaching your children about the importance of selfcontrol, be sure to focus on what they gain, not what they lose.As believers, we practice self-control because we know, love andchoose Jesus.

Dollar DatesWith seven kids between us, date nights for myhusband and me are rare treasures that requirecreativity and planning. Money is always tight inour large household, so recently I came up with the“Dollar Date.”

To begin our evening, I suggested a “dollar menu”dinner. We only ordered things that were $1, and ourtotal dinner was six bucks! We then went to the localdollar store and each purchased two treats to share. After that treasure hunt, we headed to the dollartheater and saw a great movie.

We laughed and enjoyed our evening, knowing thatwe had stayed well within our limited budget. And wehad treats left over to share with the kids when we got home!

We will be doing the “Dollar Date” on a regular basis. I love the challenge ofplanning dates that eliminate the stress of overspending. And I know my thriftyhusband appreciates my effort. That doubles the enjoyment of our evenings out!—Kari Long

Clergy Appreciation MonthHonoring pastors and other church leaders has been a respected practice since thedays of the early church. It reflects the mandate found in 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13to “respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord andwho admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of theirwork.”

There’s no better time than October—Clergy Appreciation Month—to get yourkids involved in affirming your pastor. Consider the following activities:

• Give your pastor a coupon that is good for one night of free baby-sitting.• Put together a care package with coupons, gift certificates, treats and

individually packaged items.• Participate in any needed renovations to your pastor’s home. There are almost

always home improvements that pastors need but cannot afford and do not havethe skill or time to accomplish.

• Plan an evening celebration to bless your pastor. It can be a potluck dinner, abonfire extravaganza or a simple get-together with coffee and desserts.

And remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support of ourspiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year. —Pam Woody 4

The Value of Integrity

Lying, fudging the truthand not being completelycandid tend to be common issues with teens. How do we inspire themto be men and womenof integrity in a culturethat winks at dishonesty, suggesting it’s OK to dowhatever we want aslong as no one gets hurtand we don’t get caught? Here are a few pointsworth considering:

Initiate conversations.Talk in the car; talk atthe coffee shop; talk atthe dinner table. Justtalk together. Discusscharacter traits with yourteen. Ask: “How wouldyou define integrity?” “Isthere a person you knowwho exhibits integrity?”“Why do you think it’shard to be a person of

integrity?” Listen to yourteen and explain whatGod’s Word has to sayabout integrity.

Be alert. To betterunderstand thechallengesyour teenfaces, it’simportant tounderstand hisworld. Walkthe halls of hisschool. Readthe schoolpaper. Drivecar pool.Entertain hisfriends in your home.Know what your youthpastor is teaching atchurch.

It’s also helpful tobe aware of what’shappening in teenculture. Become familiarwith popular music, movies and other media. One dad watched severalTV shows with histeenage son. He offeredhis son a quarter foreverything he couldpoint out that was nottrue. The project wasenlightening for bothfather and son as theybecame more aware ofour culture’s disregardfor integrity.

Pray for your teen.Pray specifically thatyour teen would getcaught if she’s doinganything dishonest.

When she’s caught, follow through with theconsequences, and donot bail her out. Supportyour teen as she learnsfrom her consequences, reminding her that yourlove for her does notchange.

Pray also that yourteen would have thestrength and personalconviction to do theright thing, even whenit’s difficult. Prayer helpsus all as we endeavor tobecome men and womenof integrity.—Susan A. Yates

Should my agingparent continue tolive at home?

A n s w e r : A majorfactor influencing wherean elderly person livesis his financial status.Keeping a roof over hishead often becomes hismain struggle in life. The elderly person isfrequently caught in a“catch-22” situation: Hemay have his mortgagepaid off yet worry aboutproperty-tax increasesand inflation. In addition, his home may be deteriorating, and he may nothave the resources tokeep it repaired. Plus,if his neighborhood isgoing downhill, it reducesthe value of his homefor resale. Brainstormtogether about possible

solutions. Here are twofinancial strategies forhelping your elderlyhomeowner remain athome:

Tax-relief programsfor older homeowners.Almost all the states havesome form of property-tax relief program tohelp older persons stay intheir own homes. Circuit-breaker programs, forexample, provide tax cutsor refunds when propertytaxes rise above a certainpercentage of their household income.

Reverse mortgagescreate monthly income. One of the most creativeprograms to be developedin recent years is thereverse mortgage orhome-equity conversionmortgage, which may

enable your aging lovedone to stay in her home.

In a reverse mortgage,an elderly homeownercan get a loan froma banking institutionagainst the equity in thehome, minus what is stillowed on the house. Thehomeowner gets the loanin the form of monthlychecks for as long as shelives. When she dies, thehome is sold and theprofits from the sale areused to pay off the loan.To qualify for a reversemortgage, the personmust be 62 or older, havea low mortgage balance,or own the home free andclear.
