A peninsula of land, a series of islands and adjacent waters in Lake Winnipeg combine to form this unique park. Visit beautiful Hecla Provincial Park and discover an intriguing mosaic of spirits. The maritime flavour of the island, combined with the heritages of Icelandic, Anishinabe and Ukrainian cultures, may inspire you to visit the Hecla Island Heritage Home Museum or other historic sites. Along the shoreline’s winding scenic drive, stop by the turn of the century fishing village. Restored buildings include a church, community hall, 1920s school, an Icelandic home and a village store, still in operation. Black Island protects several ceremonial sites formerly used by Anishinabe people. These destinations are set in a variety of landscapes ranging from coniferous and mixed forest, limestone cliffs, silica sand beaches and marshes. Interpretive programs provide a better understanding and appreciation of the park, how the land was created, the wildlife that lives on it and how it is managed. Share the excitement of hearing wolves answer an interpreter's call or watch as your children create nature crafts in the Hecla Village School. At Gull Harbour Point, climb the wildlife viewing tower for a magnificent view of the Island and Lake Winnipeg. At Grassy Narrows Marsh, see wetland birds like the great blue heron and the yellow-headed black bird. Fish for your supper or enjoy activities at the playgrounds, tennis courts, beach, picnic areas, boat dock and marina with boat rentals. Championship golf awaits at one of Manitoba’s most famous 18 hole golf courses. From your panoramic view on the hiking and bicycle trails, catch a glimpse of moose, wolves or bald eagles.
