Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV)

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Abundance Of Help• “No Man is an Island” by John Donne

• His main point is that no one can live by or to themselves

• We are all connected to those around us in some way

• God set forth this thought in Genesis 2:18

Page 5: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Abundance Of Help• God’s intentions were for each of us

to have help in life

• “We all need somebody to lean on”

• The principle is there throughout all generations…that we need help getting through this life

Abundance Of Help• Our theme this year is “The Abundant

Life”

• We are exploring Jesus’ idea of having life and having it more abundantly (Jn. 10:10)

• It’s not about material things, it’s about the spiritual blessings found in Christ

Page 7: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Abundance Of Help• God has offered us an abundance of

help in this life

• When we suffer, struggle or even rejoice, we don’t have to do it alone

• In what ways does God offer help to you and I in this life?

• Let’s explore a few…

Page 8: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Request • The Bible teaches us through and

through that God is there to help us

• “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1)

• Samuel & Israel set up “Ebenezer” – Stone of Help (I Sam. 7:12)

Page 9: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Request • One of the ways that God has offered

help to us is in the form of prayer

• We are allowed, even encouraged, to come before God in prayer to seek help in times of need

• “…that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:16)

Page 10: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Request • Peter encourages us to cast our

cares upon Him because of His love for us (I Pet. 5:7)

• Paul also tells us that we can make requests to a God who will take care of us (Phil. 4:6-7)

• We should come to God early and often (I Thess. 5:17)

Page 11: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Request • Jesus describes God as our Heavenly

Father seeking to give good gifts to those who ask (Matt. 7:7-11)

• Isaiah pictures God as the One who can help us and heal us in our darkest times (Is. 55:6-7)

• We must be willing to turn to the Lord

Page 12: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Request • It’s clear that God offers help to us if

we come to Him in prayer

• That is not the only use for prayer, but certainly is one of the purposes of prayer

• The prayer of the righteous avails much (Js. 5:16)

Page 13: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Guidance• We realize that we cannot get through

this life without the proper guidance

• “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jer. 10:23)

• We need direction and God’s word is what provides that

Page 14: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Guidance• David spoke of the value of God’s

word and what it can do to guide us in our lives (Ps. 19:7-11)

• Again, Psalm 119 paints a picture of the value of God’s word for us (vs. 97-104, 130)

• Trusting in the Lord means going to His word for help (Prov. 3:5-7)

Help – Guidance• The Scriptures make us wise for

salvation (II Tim. 3:15)

• All Scripture is profitable for teaching us and to make the man of God complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work (II Tim. 3:16-17)

• His word gives us all that pertains to life and godliness (II Pet. 1:3)

Page 16: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Advice• God also gives us help through our

fellow Christians

• Solomon spoke of the value of advice and counsel in Proverbs 1:5; 11:14; 12:15; 15:22; 19:20

• We can gain this counsel and advice from our Christian family

Page 17: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Advice• We have those who will instruct us

and make us better (Titus 2; II Tim. 2:2)

• The apostles and elders came together in Jerusalem to handle an important dispute that arose concerning circumcision (Acts 15)

Page 18: Hebrews 4:14-16 (NKJV) 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Help – Advice• Hebrews tells us that we are to

“exhort one another daily” and stir one another up to love and good works (Heb. 3:13; 10:24)

• We are to rejoice and weep together (Rom. 12:15)

• There are many other “one another” passages as well
