gifted & talented

Year 8 & 9 girls in SPLAT club gained a variety of experiences through a range of activities at lunchtime and after school. Activities included, Boxercise, Badminton, Zumba, Pilates, Fencing, Trampolining and Cheerleading. Most of the activities were new to the girls, so it was an exciting chance to try out something new.

Pupils in year 7, 8 & 9 who are gifted and talented in PE were given the opportunity to take part in activities at WBCC. After school pupils took part in Badminton, Softball, and Boxercise this term. They really enjoyed using the facilities and learning some new skills. As a treat the girls were offered the opportunity to visit the Hair Salon at WBCC where they had their hair washed and styled.

Pupils in year 7, 8 and 9 had the opportunity to take part in a Circus skills workshop in May. Pupils watched demonstrations of; scarf juggling, ball juggling, using diablo’s, ribbon twisting, balancing feathers, plate spinning. All pupils managed to try out each piece of equipment and learn new tricks. It was a great way to learn new skills.

Pupils in year 9 and 7 were lucky to be involved in a Hula Hooping workshop enjoying hula hooping to keep fit. They watched a demonstration and fun trying to hula around their waist, wrist, neck and legs. The pupils found out the bigger the hoop the easier it was to hula. They even had competitions against each other. The pupils really enjoyed the opportunity.

Congratulations to all pupils who represented The Heathfield Academy at the Westfield Athletics Meet. The team worked hard in all their events. Pupils who excelled in their events were; U13, Kelsea Grant 100m 1st, U13, Daniel Stewart Javelin 1st, U13, Abbey Houghton Discus 1st, U14 Kayley Chamberlain 1st, U15, Fern Neale Shot 1st, U14 Girls relay team: Tanith Cree, Jordan Richardson, Georgina Gardner, Zoe Warrington, 1st.

Year 8&9 rounders team Year 8&9 Rounders team played Mount Grace at Heathfield in June. The Heathfield team were trailing in the 1st innings by half a rounder. With some subtle changes to our batting and fielding the team fought hard to win the second innings by one and a half rounders, giving Heathfield the overall win of 5-4. Excellent catches were taken by Zoe Warrington and Rounders from Georgina Gardner. Well done girls!

Year 7 rounders teamThe year 7 rounders team lead by captain Abbey Houghton have demonstrated good skills and teamwork within their games. The girls fought hard in their league playing the local schools in our area. They triumphed against Redmoor with a winning score of 12 -5. Great catches were taken by Abbey with rounders from Sophie Faulks and Raylan Mayne. The team came 3rd overall in their league. Well done girls!

tutor group roundersYear 7, 8 and 9 took part in girls tutor group Rounders tournaments for against other tutors in their year. The pupils showed good skills in batting and fielding and played tactically to win.Year 7 – Runners-up - RC, RH winnersYear 8 – Runners-up - CM and LB winnersYear 9 – Runners-up- PH and AC Winners

48 Year 9 pupils put themselves forward to take part in an introductory 6 week Sports Leader course this year. The award developed the young people’s skills, in organising activities and people, planning communicating and how to motivate. The leaders lead events such as; our primary cluster gymnastics KS1 & 2 competition, tri-golf competition, Inclusion morning for SEN pupils, and Rounders competitions. A number of leaders also assisted at Barwell Infants in their lunchtime ‘Huff and Puff’ club, for a 4 week block working with EYFS and year 1 &2 pupils delivering sporting activities.

Heathfield invited our primary feeder schools to take part in a Primary Day of Sport which was very successful. Unfortunately the weather let us down in the afternoon, this didn’t hinder our sports events as we delivered them indoors. The leaders were also invited to assist in our feeder primary schools Sports days. The leaders really enjoyed the responsibilities of leading younger pupils and it gave them an insight to further courses within Sports Leadership. I wish all our Sports Leaders good luck for the future and hope they continue to follow the Sports Leaders path in their upper schools.

Year 7 visit to Snibston Discovery Museum. On Friday 21st June the school had a very successful visit to Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville. This was a joint venture between the Humanities and Science teams and involved all year 7 students experiencing a varied day of activities and challenges. In the ExtraOrdinary gallery students were given the opportunity to investigate the technologies and inventions that shape our everyday lives. Fashion conscious students could explore the Fashion gallery, hosting the largest fashion collection outside of London, with work from some of the UK’s top designers. While the rich past of Leicestershire’s transportation, engineering and extraction industries were showcased in the interactive museum. Finally by way of a contrast students had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the beautiful country park adjacent to the museum with its nature reserve wetland area and two fishing lakes.

group poEM BAsED on DisCussion ABouT DnAIn a series of workshops Year 7 students explored what makes them unique. They explored emotions through colour, imagined themselves as animals, discussed appearance and clothes and considered important possessions and relationships. They wrote about a “perfect day” in their lives. They considered issues of gender and diversity, and talked about the effects of bullying.

They explored what they are good at and what they are proud of. As they gained in confidence they were comfortable enough to explore what they found challenging and how that affected their sense of self. They listened to and discussed a range of poems, and then they experimented with words and language and with different forms of writing. They wrote and they redrafted, and then, like all good writers, they redrafted again. They performed their poems in front of the group, and listened to, and responded to each other’s work.

Sue Mackrell and David McCormack said ‘it was a joy to work with them. We learned a lot and they inspired us.’ Liz Coley, Curriculum Leader

During this year we have taken part in switch off fortnight and completed an audit (a survey) on how much energy we were using on lights and projectors taking into account whether the lights were on sensors

etc. We did this before the switch off fortnight then after and the difference was unbelievable. We almost halved our usage of electricity for lighting and more lights are now on sensors.

We also did a whole school audit which looked at 10 different areas of the school these areas included litter, water, wastage, transport, biodiversity (how diverse are areas - as in plants and animals) and more. We used the results from the audit to put together an action plan which we will use to improve the eco-friendliness of the school over the next academic year.

In the new term we will be again voting for eco-reps from each tutor group to continue and take forward the work completed so far this year.

experIence

At the beginning of July, a group of year 8 students went to the University of Leicester for their log on to languages course. While we were there, we did several activities including French rapping and setting goals and also learned new languages such as Italian, Russian and Spanish. Overall we thought that it was a fun and an interesting experience and would recommend that other students go to the Summer school. At first, we were not very sure about learning these new languages but at the end, we thought it was fun and we were glad they did. Nor were we sure about learning to rap in French but we did and we would like to do it again. The Summer school was a great experience for all of us and if we got the chance to go again, we definitely would. Josh Twigger & Callum Headley 8CM

The Trip2013

The French trip was quite fun, I enjoyed it and made lots of new friends. Firstly we had a long coach ride to Dover where we had loads of fun, when we got off, we were in France! Straight away we drove to Nausicaa where we saw loads of colourful and elegant fish, we then drove to our hostel where we slept for two nights. The next day we took a walk around Boulogne and saw the cheese, bread and patisseries being made, when the shops were open we walked up to the walled village where we found lots of fun stuff.Later in the day we went to see “les chocolats de buessent” we saw chocolate being made and also bought some.Next we went to the hypermarket “Auchan” we bought French food and got in a bit of trouble with Mr. Hobson for being late !, when we were ready we went to “pain show” where we saw French crepes being made.

After our second night at the hostel we made our way to Paris. We went on a “bateau mouche” and saw lots of French monuments like: The Louvre, Notre dame de Paris, the Eiffel tower and lots of bridges. We then went to our hotel which was so much more comfortable than the hostel, and the next day had lots of fun at Disney land, on the final day we went home. By Lucas Humphrys

3rd June to the 7th June - The Heathfield Academy French TripThe French trip was an amazing experience. I had a magnificent time. The teachers were fantastic and funny especially Mr Tene. The best thing that we did was going to Disneyland Paris. The worst thing was going to bed at 9.00 and waking up at 7.30. Hopefully we get to go next year. By Kieran Almey
