Welcome to the HeartSmart Walks programme for October to January 2020

These walks are led by volunteer Walk Leaders and are designed to cater for all ages and abilities. The walks offer opportunities to exercise and meet new people in a safe and friendly environment. Below is some information to help you get the most out of them:

All walks finish at their starting point unless otherwise stated.

No booking is required but please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start.

Please inform the Walk Leader if you will be leaving the walk early and sign out.

We recommend always bringing a mobile phone with the number below stored in case of emergency.

Please wear footwear suitable for country walks and you may like to bring a drink of water.

Please note that the walks are smoke free.

Dogs are welcome unless otherwise stated but must be kept on the lead.

Timings and distances stated on the programme are approximate.

If the weather is poor the walk may be cancelled. Please check with the office or website if unsure (office hours Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm).

Please read the walk description before joining the walk and ensure you are walking at the right level for you.

L: Harvey and Jon M: Time: 30mins Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace with a small bridge over the pond. A steady incline to the top of the jubilee path with benches to sit and rest along the way. Meet: The Grange Leisure Centre, Bepton Road, Midhurst, GU29 9HD. Free 2 hr parking at the Grange. A ticket has to be obtained and displayed on your windscreen even for the free 2 hrs. Vehicle reg. is needed for the ticket. By Car: Follow the A286 to Midhurst; take The Fairway and Holmbush Way to New Rd/A286 Turn left onto New Rd/A286. Continue to follow A286. The Grange will be on the right. By Bus: The Grange is served by a good bus service Up to 20% off at the Grange coffee shop on production of your Everyone Active card which can be obtained free of charge at the Grange reception. Tue 1st Oct – 2pm EMSWORTH HARBOUR L: Helen M: Keith Time/Distance: 1 hour/3 miles (longer walk), 30 minutes/1 mile (shorter walk) Come along to enjoy a picturesque walk from the New Life Christian Church car park, through Emsworth Yacht Club, out along the embankment onto the Thorney Island West Coast footpath. There is a gentle slope onto the footpath, but the rest is a firm, stony footpath, taking in views over beautiful Emsworth Harbour, salt marshes and the seabirds. There is also a narrow footpath which although higher and more exposed takes in stunning views across the harbour towards Emsworth. Meet: The New Life Christian Church car park and back to the church hall for a chat, cup of tea and cake. By Car: From A259 turn onto Thorney Road, Emsworth, drive 100 meters down a lane and the church is well signposted. At the end of the drive is the car park. Post code PO10 8BN. By Bus: 700 bus stop is 100 metres away on the main road (A259). Wed 2nd Oct – 10.30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED

HEALTHY HEATH WALK* WELCHES COMMON

AND BURTON MILL POND L: Abbi M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3.5 miles. A nice stroll through a range of habitats, beginning at Burton Mill car park, heading up through the woods and across fields. We then will walk through the heathland at Welches Common before heading back down into the woodland and circling the pond. Ending with a tranquil view from the platform and some optional wildlife spotting.

Meet: Burton Mill Pond car park, near Duncton, West Sussex, GU28 0JR. SU978179 By Car: By car take the A285 south of Petworth and after around 2 miles, turn left sign posted Burton Mill. The car park is a mile or so down the road on the left, just before you pass Burton Pond itself (on right hand side). Fri 4th Oct - 10:30am CHANTRY HILL AND BLACKPATCH HILL L: Jane M: Pete Time: 2hrs 45mins Distance: 6.25miles A Downland walk with lovely views towards the coast. No stiles but a hilly walk with some uneven ground. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: at Chantry Post. By Car: Follow the A283 to Storrington. As you leave Storrington heading east, take the second turning on the right - Chantry Lane. Follow this narrow lane all the way up to the top of the Downs where there is a car park. Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station. Mon 7th Oct – 2pm *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK*

MEANDER L: Angela M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 2.25 miles. A pleasant wander through Midhurst Common and adjacent land. Enjoying heathland and woodland habitats. We might spot some rare heathland species on the way. Meet: Carron Lane Car Park. Grid reference SU 87768 21427. Nearest postcode GU29 9LD. By Car: At the Midhurst end of the A272 Petersfield Road turn off on to Carron Lane (left if you are coming from Midhurst and right if you are coming from Petersfield). This is a small residential lane so please be careful of parked cars and oncoming traffic. This leads up to the recreation ground and cemetery car park. Meet in the car park. Tue 8th Oct - 11am

Tue 8th Oct – 10.30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK* HEYSHOTT HIKE L: Kate M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: No more than 5 miles. Join a National Park ranger to explore the countryside around Heyshott. Focussing on the heathland and its wildlife/history, these walks will vary in route but will stay under 5 miles. Suitable for trampers and off-road pushchairs or those that could be carried over obstacles, but not suitable for wheelchairs due to boggy, uneven ground. Dogs on leads welcome. Meet: Heyshott Common car park SU 91211 19419 / GU29 0BY. By Car: From the A286 heading towards Midhurst from Chichester, turn right onto Bex Lane. Continue on this road for around 3.5km until Hoyle crossroads (Where Hoyle Lane and New Road cross), and turn left. The car park is approximately 500m on the left. From the A272 heading towards Midhurst from Petworth, turn left onto New Road (first left after Halfway Bridge). Continue for 3km and the car park is on the right. Follow part of the Serpent trail and the Sussex border path through beautiful woodland and along quiet fields and lanes with lovely downland views. Meet: The car park is near Hill Brow, Liss. By Car: Take the right turn off the A272 at Rogate by the White Horse and follow the road uphill. Keep going and take the left turn towards Liss. Follow the road until you see two cottages with a layby on your right and the car park entrance is immediately on the left. A lovely walk along lanes and through woods via the villages of North and South Stoke. It will be muddy in places if it has rained recently. Five stiles. Meet: Amberley Station Car Park BN18 9LR By Car: A27 to Fontwell, A29 to Whiteways roundabout then B2139 to Amberley Sun 13th Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* THORNEY ISLAND L: Dominic M: Time: Distance: 5 miles along the sea wall to Chidham Point, into Chidham and back. Meet: Thornham Marina car park at the end of Thornham Lane. Nearest postcode PO10 8DD. By Car: A259 towards Emsworth, turn off for Thorney Island Army Camp. Thornham Lane is ½ mile down on the left. Mon 14th Oct - 10:30am KIRDFORD L: Richard M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: Approx. 3.5 miles. Enjoy a level walk, which, after a start on narrow footpaths, opens out onto open farmland and through fields, some of which have cattle grazing, therefore I’m afraid no dogs. We return past a fish farm and through woodland. There are a number of stiles to negotiate. Meet: In front of the Half Moon pub in Kirdford. By Car: From Petworth take the A283 north, then after the ‘Stone Masons Inn’ take the right fork by the green to Balls Cross. Continue along this road and eventually you will arrive at the village of Kirdford. At the T- junction at the far end of the village turn right and park in the road opposite the ‘Half Moon’ (not in their parking spaces). RH14 0LT.

Your support to the club in buying refreshments is appreciated in return for free parking.

By Car: Take the A259, Bognor Littlehampton Road. About ¼ mile east of Ford Road roundabout, turn south into Ferry Road. Follow signs for beach and Golf Course onto Rope Walk. The Yacht Club is on west bank of the river opposite the golf club at the top of the slope. By Bus/Train: Across the footbridge opposite Littlehampton station. HEALTHY HEATH WALK* LORD’S PIECE POOTLE

L: Charles M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 1.3 miles. A gentle circular walk – or pootle! – taking in a variety of wildlife, with views of the open heaths and rolling Downland landscape. Suitable for pushchairs (kissing gate at start to get on site) and off road trampers, but not wheelchairs. The route is mostly on the flat, but there are some medium gradients in parts with minor rutting and loose sand. Well behaved dogs on a lead welcome. Meet: Lord’s Piece, Coates Lane, Sutton, RH20 1PZ. SU 99003 17374 By Car: From A272 take A285 south from Petworth, turning left at Heath End onto Burton Park Road. Keep going past Burton Mill Pond and the turning right to Sutton until you reach another right hand turn. FISHBOURNE TO WEST WITTERING L: Jane M: Time: All day Distance: 10 miles. This is a flat linear walk following the coastline from Fishbourne to West Wittering. We will catch the bus back to Chichester on completion of the walk. Bring Bus pass/ Bus fare and a packed lunch. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: At the top of Mill Lane Fishbourne by The Bull's Head pub PO19 3JP. By Car: A27 to Fontwell, A29 to Whiteways Lodge, B2139 passing through Amberley, then minor road on right just after sign to Rackham and Springhead Farm on the left. Mon 21st Oct - 10:30am AROUND BIGNOR L: Simon M: Time: 2 hrs Distance: 3 ½ miles. A walk around Bignor starting from Bignor Roman Villa. Some stiles but apart from one short climb most of the walk is mainly flat. Meet: Bignor Roman Villa (parking by kind permission of Bignor Roman Villa) By Car: Take the A29 to Bury. At the bottom of Bury Hill take the turning (westwards) signposted for West Burton and Bignor. Bignor Roman Villa is also signposted with brown tourism signage (2 miles). Follow the lane and signs through West Burton. Bignor Roman Villa is on the right before reaching Bignor village. Mon 21st Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* PETWORTH PARK – DEER &

“THE RUT” L: Gerald M: Pete Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 3 miles. Hopefully to see the famous 'Rut' (mating period) in Petworth Park. See the older & stronger bucks defend their harem of does. Certainly we will see some deer. Binoculars can be useful. Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington, GU28 9AF. SU963 220. By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272, then, in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. By Bus: No.1 from Midhurst and Petworth. Fri 25th Oct - 10:30am EARTHAM NORE HILL L: Peter B M: Pete Time: 2 hrs Distance: 4 mile circular walk up Nore Hill, through Eartham village and along a lesser known “atmospheric” section of Stane Street. Meet: Free Forestry Commission car park on the right, ¾ of a mile north of The George PH at Eartham. Map ref SU938106. PO18 0LU By Car: Take A27 Chichester bypass towards Arundel. Half a mile before Fontwell turn left following signs to Eartham, after Z bend pass The George PH and continue north to Forestry Commission car park. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester with sharp right turn towards Eartham with car park soon after on the left.

Fri 25th Oct - 10:30am *NEW WALK* RACTON AND STANSTED L: Jane M: Ann Time: 2 hrs 15 mins Distance: 5 miles. A walk through fields and quiet lanes taking in Stansted and Racton Monument. There are stiles and a steady climb up hill. We do need to walk 100 yards on a busy road. No dogs on this walk please. Meet: Stansted House Car Park PO9 6DX By Car: Take the B2146 from Chichester into Emsworth Common Road. Turn right at the Broad Walk and Stansted House Car park is on your right. Mon 28st Oct - 10:30am SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS CHICHESTER CANAL L: Helen M: Time: 30mins Distance: 1 mile. A flat walk at a gentle pace, suitable for beginners. Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city. By Bus: 5 minute walk from Chichester Bus Station. Tue 29th Oct - 10:30am WEY ARUN CANAL ‘WEST’

(LOXWOOD) L: Richard M: Time: 2 hrs 15 mins Distance: 4.7 miles. We walk westward along the tow path to where the Sussex/Surrey border path crosses, then turn North adjacent to a restored lock. We then make our way back through open countryside and farmland. The walk is reasonably level with just a couple of stiles. Sorry no dogs due to livestock. Meet: Canal visitor centre car park behind the ‘Onslow Arms’ pub in Loxwood. By Car: From Petworth take A272 towards Wisborough Green. Turn left by the green, pass the ‘Cricketers pub’, and continue to the end of this road where you turn left. Carry on North on the B2133 into Loxwood, where, at the bottom of the hill you will see the ‘Onslow Arms’ on the right. Pass through the pub car park to the canal car park at the rear. Tue 29th Oct - 10:30am *HEATHLANDS REUNITED HEALTHY HEATH WALK*

LYNCHMERE COMMON

L: Andy M: Time: 1 hr Distance: 1.2 Miles. A gentle, generally easy going walk (with some short inclines, declines and uneven surfaces) on heathland paths, including part of the Serpents Trail and Sussex Border Path Promoted routes, looking at some of the special natural and cultural features of our Heathland Heritage. On land owned and managed by the Lynchmere Society and delivered as part of the Heathlands Reunited Project. There is also a narrow footpath which although higher and more exposed takes in stunning views across the harbour towards Emsworth. Meet: The New Life Christian Church car park and back to the church hall for a chat, cup of tea and cake. L: Abbi M: Time: 1 hr 30 mins Distance: 1.3 miles. A gentle circular walk – or pootle! – taking in a variety of wildlife, with views of the open heaths and rolling Downland landscape. Suitable for pushchairs (kissing gate at start to get on site) and off road trampers, but not wheelchairs. The route is mostly on the flat, but there are some medium gradients in parts with minor rutting and loose sand. Well behaved dogs on a lead welcome. Meet: At the entrance to Maybush Copse, which is about 200yds down Cot Lane on the right hand side. Parking is very limited - there is a small parking area at the top of Cot Lane and on the verge by Maybush Copse. PO18 8SR By Car: Take the A259 Fishbourne Road from Chichester. Continue over one roundabout, pass the Bosham Inn on the right and Cot Lane is a turning on the left. By Bus: The 700 bus stops at the top of Cot Lane so this is a good walk to access by bus. This is a reasonably level walk with countryside views, 5 or 6 stiles. Sorry no dogs due to livestock. Meet: On East side of village green opposite shop. By Car: From Petworth take the A283 North, then after the ‘Stone Masons Inn’, take the right fork by the green to Balls Cross. Continue along this road, then after you pass the village sign for Kirdford, take the next left sign posted to Plaistow.
