D uring the Autum term, 12 boys in Year 10 took part in a 10 week boxing course which was delivered as part of the Sky Living for Sport Programme. The main focus was on the fundamentals of boxing and how it can promote self disiplince and respect amongst the students taking part. There was also an opportunity for students to work on their fitness levels by taking part in various drills aimed at raising the heart rate and improving agility. Those taking part did so in an extremely positive manner: throwing themselves into all the drills and giving the punch bags their all! They were also very attentative to their boxing coach, especially during bouts with each other in the ring. The 12 boys are now looking at ways they can employ the skills and attributes learnt during the boxing sessions to design and run an activity day for our local primary schools. The ideas that they have mentioned so far seem very exciting so keep an eye out for them! Congratulations to the following students who were an absolute credit to the Academy: Mohammed Rabnawaz, Lewis Martin, Shiplu Miah, Brandon Compton, Layton Parker, Adil Altaf Hussain, Tayub Javed, Iqrar Zamir, Harun Abdulkadir, Abshir Warsame, Abukar Farrah, Rawa Ali. You’ll find yourself helping people or the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition and taking part in a residential activity (Gold only). It was hard when we had to work out because my muscular endurance was bad. The part I found most fun was when we had to spar in the ring.” Brandon Compton “I enjoyed boxing because we got to test our skills and our boxing techniques on the bags. The best part was when we tested our skills and techniques in the ring. The hardest part was when we had to remember the boxing techniques and at what time we should use them because it was hard to remember sometimes.” Adil Altaf-Hussain “I enjoyed boxing because I got to test my strength on the punch bags. Calorie Challenge This half term we will be launching the PE Challenge! We kick-off with a calorie burning challenge for staff and students which will take place in our brand new multigym. All you have to do is get yourself down to the multigym (3:05pm-4:05pm) or (4:05pm-5:05pm for Sixth Formers) and start exercising. Our Pulse gym equipment will monitor how far you run/cycle, how much weight you lift and how many calories you burn off. Mr Lea will produce a fortnightly report to email to those who take part. The winner will receive a special prize!!

Student of theLesson and WeekStudent of the lesson is a new initiative we are using in PE. Each lesson the teacher will pick a Student of the Lesson and award them with a certificate for their achievement folders. There will also be “Good News” available as usual. Additionally, each week the PE teachers will nominate a Student of the Week - there will be a notice-baord to announce the winner. Can you be the one in your class to win an award?

The Return of E-ACT Games Competitions

Heartlands Academy was victorious as overall winner of last year’s E-ACT Games competitions.

The tournament consisted of five events: athletics, table tennis, badminton, rowing and a multi-sport festival. This year the competition returns to feature badminton, table tennis and athletics events for which the PE deapartment will be keeping a keen eye out for students able to represent the academy in any of these areas. Competition is expected to be fierce so anyone interested will have to demonstrate their enthusiasm and ability. Do you want to be involved? Well, here’s a list of ways you can improve your chances of being picked:

Attend before and after school clubs – check the new timetable of clubs and remember to bring your PE kit on the right days. This will help you improve your skills and put you in view of the PE teachers who will be selecting the squads.

Practice at home when possible - if you have sporty family members, ask them to practice with you - the more

often you practice, the better you will be. Remember, there are many transferrable skills in different sporting activities, therefore performing in any sport will help you in all sports.

Improve your fitness. Fitness is the key factor in all sports, whether it is improving your endurance to play football or increasing your speed to reach shots in badminton. By improving your fitness you will certainly better your overall game play in all sports. You can either take advantage of the Academy fitness suite or, if you prefer, workout at home with a good exercise routine.

Be seen! If you are serious about being a part of the E-ACT Sports Teams you need to get yourself noticed by the PE staff. Express your interest by talking to your teachers and ask to be considered in the selection process.

Finally, we wish you all hte very best of luck in your campaign to beome part of the E_ACT Team for 2012 - 2013.
