Security/First Aid/Dispatch The Security / First Aid staff are here to help ensure you have a relaxed and spiritually rewarding holiday weekend. The Security Center is next to the Pavilion (on the south side) and staffed 24 hours a day. For emergencies at Camp, Security can be reached on channel 21 through anyone with a radio. In the event of an emergency outside of Camp where someone would need to contact HSA staff during the festival, please have them call the Heartland cell phone at 816-743-4045. Heartland Spiritual Alliance does not as-sume responsibility for individual personal routine health care needs or medications, which must be met daily by festival attendees. Festival attendees remain solely responsi-ble for their own health and safe behavior during the festival. If you need the Shuttle, please contact Dispatch or visit your nearest Shuttle Stop.

FRS/GMRS Radios Please DO NOT use Channels 10 through 21 for chatting or tracking down your children. These are for use by specific HSA committees ONLY. If you choose to monitor one of these stations, please be kind and DO NOT TRANSMIT. It is important for your safety and the safety of others around you. Our staff needs to be able to communicate effectively with each other in emergency situations.

Disabled Attendees Heartland Pagan Festival makes reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. A red wristband will be given to those people with physical limitations or health problems. Those people will receive priority on the shuttle. Wheelchair accessible showers and restrooms are located on site within the bathhouse. There is also an interpreter available for people with hearing disabilities. Please contact Dispatch if you need an interpreter.

Community Fires and Firewood Campfires are permitted only in designated, previously existing fire pits. Under no cir-cumstances may you dig your own fire pit in any other location. However, you may use your own grill. You may not cut down any living trees or portions of living trees for firewood. Please supply your own firewood, as all firewood supplied by Heartland Spiritu-al Alliance is only for the use of Heartland Spiritual Alliance-operated fires and the Bardic Circle in Mystical Merchants area.

Trash & Recycling Trash Pirates will be collecting aluminum, plastic, and glass during festival. For safety reasons, we collect glass separately. You may burn your cardboard or leave it for us. Trash barrels are also provided so please be courteous to our Trash Pirates and place only proper items in the recycling barrels! Barrels are placed throughout camp and la-beled for your convenience. Please have all trash bagged and closed. We usually collect trash twice daily so when you hear us coming be sure to bring out your trash and recy-cling to reduce the mounds of trash we’ll be wading through at the end of festival. We will, again, be collecting all gently used camping items (resalable items only please!) that would normally be thrown away and donating them to a local non-profit that helps homeless youth! We would also encourage all guests to pick up scat-tered MOOP (Matter Out Of Place). Though it is the Trash Pirates responsibility to pick up trash and recycling during festival, it is everyone’s responsibility to help keep our land clean. Special MOOP bags available at the Gaea Youth Tent, Jr. Pirate Doubloon Shoppe, or from Pirates while on runs. Remember Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and “Leave No Trace”!

Every year artists submit artwork in coordination with the festival theme. Congratula-tions to our 2014 H.P.F. art winner, Sarah Geimer whose artwork was chosen as the winning design to help promote the 29th Heartland Pagan Festival. *see page 32 for more detail

To the seekers of balance and community and light in attendance, and to

your loved ones and friends and acquaintances, I’d like to wish you all

Good Grief.

We’ve all experienced grief, or those of us who’ve lived long enough have,

and it can be a painful, heartrending thing.

And it can be a place in time wherein we recognize the impact another light

has made upon our lives.

We can make our grief into a celebration of the life that is gone,

and of love that lives still in our hearts.

So to each of you who has, in your most painful moments, taken your grief,

and found a way to channel your energy into a positive action, any positive

action, Good Grief.

For each question your grief pulls from you, for every, “Why?!?” your heart

cries out, commit one act of kindness.

For others, strangers, lovers, friends, and hardest of all, for yourself.

Because your grief is for someone who loved You, too.

Good Grief

In Celebration of the Lives of:

Liz Stillwell, who did lighting production for the 20th Anniversary

of HPF, passed away on February 23rd, 2014 after a brief battle with cancer. She was an artist with light, and the stage was her

canvas. She immensely enjoyed her experience at HPF, and was hoping to join us again, but Fate had other plans.

Linda Williams Pitt. Gone, but not forgotten. We love you still and

think of you often.

Gramz Denning

And all the other incredible people we have lost.

HSA Sacred Experience Main Ritual Arch

Kenaz – Illuminating and Empowering Advantages Thursday, 630pm, Opening Ritual (Main Fire Circle)

As each of us travels on our personal life and magical paths, we utilize a variety of skills, concepts and tools to give us an advantage over our daily obstacles. Together in ritual we shall shine a little light on some of those crucial elements in each other's paths so they can be shared and empowered. We invite you to join us as we open the festival and seek to shed light on, and empower, those things that help us further our paths. At registration you will receive a physical representation of these advantages for you to empower throughout the festival and to take home afterward.

On the final day of festival at 12 pm, the mandala will be ritually destroyed and returned to nature for the blessing to be dispersed outwards to the land and the wider community.

Vision Quest Saturday, 800pm - Midnight (Enter by Venus Mound)

Our Vision Quest will guide you through the dark places of Gaea to illuminate some of the obstacles we face daily and some advantages to help overcome them. The Vision Quest will begin at the trail entrance at Venus Mound (please see your camp map). As always, the trail is a challenging hike, even in the daylight, so be prepared with good walking/hiking shoes and a flashlight (both are required). Also, for safety reasons, only those 18 years of age or older will be allowed into the Vision Quest, and any visibly intoxicated people will be turned away.

Spiral Quest Saturday, 130 - 230pm

concerts and rituals.

SUMMER OSBORNE

You could describe her as the love child of Adele, Carole King, and Joss Stone. You could describe her music as folk soul, acoustic rock, and piano pop with glimpses of jazz, blues, and roots music. But you cannot confine her to a genre. You will laugh, you will cry, you will feel. As she says, “it is the evolution of the soul – one song at a time.”

Summer is an award winning American singer-songwriter who entertains audiences throughout the US and Canada with her

magical brand of melodic and lyrically potent genre-jumping performances. She master-fully amalgamates the human condition, spirituality, truth, love and healing. When Os-borne’s kaleidoscope of music is infused with her charismatic stage presence and natural-ly humorous personality, every show leaves the listener wanting more.

Summer’s eighth album, As I Am, was released in June of 2013.

MURPHEY'S MIDNIGHT ROUNDERS

Murphey's Midnight Rounders is an acoustic and vocal group with their feet firmly planted in American music. They call their sound “power folk” – a fusion of folk, blues, rock and country. Their original material runs the gamut of hu-man emotion while their vocal harmonies have an impact that is fresh & inspiring. "Sometimes, we're cut from the same cloth as Peter, Paul & Mary. Sometimes, we're a cross between the Grateful Dead and The Andrew Sisters,” says Brad Murphey, the leader of the band.

Murphey has distinguished himself as a versatile songwriter, arranger and guitarist. Along with Murphey is Teresa Frank on vocals, mandolin, and percussion. Bonnie Hanna-Powers is the third vocalist in the group.

Brad, Bonnie and Teresa have a tangible magic and they pull you into their music. Since 2009, Murphey's Midnight Rounders have made many friends & fans performing at festi-vals around the Midwest and southeastern United States.

TUATHA DEA

CELTIC TRIBAL GYPSY ROCK! Tuatha Dea is pure primal energy with a Celtic and World twist. The band’s eclectic sound blends the tribal vibe of primitive drums with con-ventional and non-conventional instruments such as guitar, bass, modern and Native American flutes, didgeridoo and more as well as a myriad of vocal styles to create a truly unique sound.

Tuatha Dea first began with a group of close friends gathering together once a week to drum for kicks in 2009. Soon after the band began to write original music and playing at local social gatherings. They eclectically mix Scottish, Irish, new age, traditional and mod-ern day music to produce a unique variety and blend of rhythm and melody. Their rhyth-

mic groove naturally inspires audience par-ticipation which has become a staple of their performances. From the beginning the band has embraced its Celtic heritage and meshed the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland and Great Britain with the pulse-pounding heartbeat of the drums to produce unique versions of traditional favorites as well as intense and danceable original com-positions.

Original music such as the Celtic mythology of their namesake song “Tuatha de Danaan” and “Pipers Pay” as well as mainstream compositions such as “The Sky Is Falling” and “Granny’s Bedtime Tonic” marks Tuatha Dea as a creative force. The band’s sopho-more album is entitled Kith & Kin.

A hands-on workshop about working with Pranic energy. There is no sitting and observing in this experiential workshop on aura cleansing, and chakra cleansing and balancing. class! Chakras, in Hindu metaphysical tradition and other belief systems, are centers of Prana, life force, or vital energy. When your chakras are not balanced or become blocked, over time, you will feel a physical and/ or emotional response. When your chakras are in a balanced state you will feel calm and peaceful, less susceptible to stress and anxiety. We’ll experiment with ways to recognize auras and locate Chakhras, ways to balance the energy centers, cleansing them and keeping them in good working order. Daniel (Heng Xue) Scharpenburg What is Meditation?

Friday, 400 - 500pm, Bardic Circle

Meditation has been shown to increase emotional stability, lower blood pres-sure, reduce stress, and increase general calmness. Meditation is a way to 'wake up' to the present moment and also to cut through delusion and see life as it really is. It's a way of tuning in to our true nature, which is luminous and free. No experience is necessary for this workshop, just a good attitude. This will consist of some instruction, a group meditation, and Q & A.

with the joke, and how to embrace the jokes rather than let yourself get all in a tizzy. Presented by Jessica Yohn

We All Come from the Goddess: Demystifying Women's Mysteries (Saturday, 245 - 415pm, Flora’s Garden) Discussion/Goddess Blessing. Open to women and men. There's been a lot of discussion of women's ritual in the pagan community. This workshop opens women's mysteries to everyone, with a blessing from the goddess and a chance to discuss just what magic women work in ritual, what magic we might like to do, and how we all feel about doing it. Galadrial, Gwyneth and Lark have led women's rituals at HPF for more than 20 years. We would love to gather perspectives and ideas from men and women at Heartland.

The Pagan Empath (Sunday,1000 - 1100am, Flora’s Garden) This is a beginner’s class for pagans who are or think they may be an empath. We will discuss the traits of an empath, grounding and shielding, and ultimately control of the gift.

Kris Bethea is a life-long Empath who has experienced a wide-variety of life in her life-time. Adopted from birth, she struggled as a child and as a teenage Empath who was unaware of her abilities. As she feels that being an intuitive empath is a gift, Kris and the Empath Support Group she helped to found on Facebook share the goal of educating newly awakened or discovered Empaths about their gift and teaching them to protect themselves so that they may be more comfortable in social situations."

Women’s Mysteries (Sunday, 1215 - 215pm, Venus Sanctuary) The Mysterious Women of Heartland are meeting again. Please join us for ritual and fun. Open to women and young children. (If you need transportation to the site, please contact the HSA Shuttle in plenty of time to arrive by 1215). Galadrial, Gwyneth and Lark love making magic with the women of HPF. We also make magic with the Web of Oz.

Memorial Day Ritual (Sunday, 600 - 615pm, Memorial Grove) A Pagan religious service to honor those who have died in war for the USA. The ceremony is brief -- about 5 minutes -- but very emotional.

Gary Stanfield has been Pagan since the late 1980's, mostly into English reconstruction, and is a military veteran and a UU.

HPF 2014 ARTWORK By Sarah Geimer

To us, the horse symbolizes freedom and swiftness, opening up

new roads of opportunity. To our ancestors, it was also support

for nearly all aspects of life: working, growing food, transport,

warfare. It follows then that Epona, horse Goddess, was widely-

worshipped across Western Europe at a time when most deities

were very localized, such was the great importance of the horse to

our ancestors. It was this dual importance, the working, support

role of the horse, as well as the joyful freedom the horse affords

us that inspired this design.

Sarah is a Kansas City resident, HSA member, and lifelong Witch

and Pagan.

In 1985, there were no Pagan festivals held near the Kansas City area. Interest-ed folks meeting at The Rune picnic formed a group, The Council of the South Winds (CSW). Their first meeting mustered only three people, but the next as-sembled the first core group of eight, joined by a dozen or so later. These in-trepid pioneers put together the first Heartland Pagan Festival (HPF), held June 27-29th, 1986. It was held at Camp Hammond, near Lawrence, KS as a three day event.

CSW repeated the Festival in 1987 at Camp Shawnee near Kansas City with a larger attendance and larger expenses. After much painful debate and delibera-tion it was decided that incorporation was needed to effectively manage the financial and liability aspects of the event, and The Heartland Spiritual Alliance (HSA) was incorporated September 19, 1988.

In 1991 we saw HPF move to the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, near Osce-ola, Missouri. Featured guests were Stewart and Janet Farrar, on their first visit to the United States. There were over 60 workshops, several rituals, two con-certs and the first “Merchants In The Round”.

The year we came home was 1992. Gaea Retreat Center, near Tonganoxie, Kansas, owned and operated by Earth Rising, Inc. was the site for the first HPF that did not have any restrictions on size or activities. HSA membership was instrumental in the rehabilitation of the camp, which had been neglected for many years. With considerable donated funds and hundreds of hours of labor contributed to repair and upgrade the camp’s infrastructure. We continue that support to this day.

Heartland Spiritual Alliance is perpetually working for the community through a variety of educational programs and activities consistent with our Mission State-ment.
