What is a heart attack?
A heart attack occurs when a clot stops the flow of blood to a section of the heart, damaging the heart so that it cannot work (pump blood) as well.
6
What are the signs of a heart attack?
Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back.
Pain or discomfort in one or more arms, your back, neck, jaw or stomach
Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort
Other signs, such as a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness
7
What causes a heart attack?
Happens when or more of the arteries supplying your heart with oxygen-rich blood become blocked.
During a heart attack, one of these build ups can rupture.
•A blood clot then forms on the site of the rupture.
•If the clot is large enough, it can completely block the flow of blood through the artery.

What should I do if someone is having a heart attack?
If you have any of the above symptoms, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
