About us

We are a part of government called theDepartment of Health. It is our job to helppeople keep healthy.

In Spring 2011 we asked people for theirviews on our plans to help people keephealthy.

This plan was called Healthy Lives, HealthyPeople.

We made this plan because some peoplein England are not as healthy as we wouldlike them to be.

In our plan we said that councils wouldtake on a new job in helping to keep peoplehealthy. Lots of people said that they likedthis idea.

We also said that there would be a neworganisation, called Public Health England,to do the jobs that need doing at a nationallevel to help people stay healthy.

A number of organisations that work tomake sure people do not get ill will be partof Public Health England, for example, theHealth Protection Agency.

We now want to make sure that thishappens.

We want to make sure that everyone keepsworking on our plans to help people keephealthy.

Your views on our plans

We asked people their views of our plans.Over 2100 people told us their views.This is good because it will help us get ourplans right.

Plans

Most people said our plans were a goodidea.

But some people said they were not happyabout some of our ideas.

Some people said:

 ● people who work to make sure peoplestay healthy should still be able to saywhat they think when they are part ofPublic Health England

 ● Directors of Public Health should beable to speak up about the health oftheir local people even if they do notagree with us

 ●? they did not always know what theDirector of Public Health’s job wouldbe

 ● they thought that our plans mightsplit things up making it hard forpeople to work together to keeppeople healthy.

Some people asked:

 ● what would happen to the jobs ofpeople who work to help people stayhealthy

 ● who would help if there was a bigemergency like flu and how wouldthey help

 ● how much money councils would getto help people stay healthy.

Our plans

In Summer 2011 the government heardmore of people’s views about changes inhealth and healthcare.

We have now heard lots of views and thisis what we say.

Councils

Councils can help people stay healthy.They will be good at this because theyalready do things that make peoplehealthier, like housing, transport oreducation.

We will give money to councils to helppeople to stay healthy.

Councils can only spend this money onhelping people stay healthy.

The Director of Public Health at the councilwill do this.

Councils and people who work helpingpeople keep healthy can start working onplans now.

Public Health England

A new service called Public Health Englandwill work with councils to help people stayhealthy.

It will:

 ●

April 2013start to do its work in April 2013

 ● be able to say things in public aboutthe best way to make sure peoplestay healthy

 ● help councils and others if there arebig emergencies in health like flu

 ● be made up of lots of people whoknow lots of things about making surepeople stay healthy.

What we will do

We will:

 ● look at lots of ways of helping peoplekeep healthy

 ● work with councils and people whowork helping people keep healthy tomake sure our plans are right, and tomake sure everyone knows what theyare doing.
