GINI’S STORY
Gini and her son, Jlynn, pictured above, are grateful
for the scholarship that makes their YMCA
membership affordable. Gini was a single parent for
many years and had to raise her two children on her
own. She adopted Jlynn, whom her cousin had given
birth to. Unable to raise him, she asked Gini to adopt
him and gave him Gini’s last name. Jlynn was born with
autism, and at five weeks, had a pulmonary
hemorrhage. Money became scarce as Gini had to pay
for medical expenses for both Jlynn and her other son,
Jonathan.
Gini had to move from Greenville to Spartanburg to a
house that had been in her family for many years. The
house was built in the 1920s and needed many
repairs. Because of all the expenses, she was unable
to provide Christmas gifts for her children.
Gini visited the Y and learned about the Angel Tree
program. After she signed up, the Y provided her
family with Christmas gifts. Gini and Jlynn have
benefitted greatly from the financial assistance they
receive for their Y membership. Jlynn loves to play
soccer and baseball at the Y and is learning
valuable social skills in childwatch.
“The Y is like a village for us,” Gini said. “You are
literally changing our lives.”
