May 2017 Health Note
1
During the month of May, in celebration of Mother’s Day and National Women’s Health Week from
May 14-20, women are honored for the love and dedication given to making each family member healthy!
For the many women who forget to put themselves first, the Chronic Disease Prevention Program asks you
to take a moment to inspire your mom, grandmother, sister and wife about good health.
This year, pay it forward by helping mom or that special woman
in your life make health her #1 priority. National Women’s Health
Week, is a good way to remind her to schedule a medical check-
up. According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease
continues to be the number one killer of American women. The
symptoms of having heart disease vary from person to person,
and is the reason regular check-ups are the best option.
A good plan can help prevent and control heart disease at
any age. Remind her that “healthy looks good at every age”,
whether she is in her 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, or 70’s! Regularly
including physical activity, eating healthy and getting medical
check-ups is a good plan for any age.
To support her, offer to:
Physical activity: Go on a 30 minute walk with her. Daily exercise will lower her risk of dying early by
27% compared to someone who only exercises once a week (Health, 2017).
Healthy eating: Prepare healthy meals that count! “Because every food and drink matters!” Plan meals
with a variety of veggies, fruit, whole grains and lean protein.
Medical check–ups: Go to the doctor with her and inspire dialogue about family history. Talk about your
health goals and allow her to share hers.
Once mom gets back on track with a meal and exercise plan she likes, she will begin to feel healthier and
“age will just be a number.”

Mayo 2017 Nota para Su Salud
2
