In the next few pages you’ll find the Syn values for hundreds of everyday foods. When you plan your days and decide your Syns ahead of time, you’ll usually find that the Syn values listed here will be all you need to Food Optimise 100% – no need to search, scan or calculate everything you eat (life’s just too short!).
These are average Syn values taken from over 74,000 branded and supermarket own brand products that we maintain on our Syns database. It may be that the exact biscuit, ice cream or 25g pack of crisps you love is higher than average by half, one or even a couple of Syns – but these very small differences won’t affect your weight loss. It’s when we stop counting Syns or don’t check Syn values before we eat them that we stop losing weight. The deliberate process of deciding in advance, keeping count and sticking to your personal ‘safe’ Syns allowance is what will help you stay confidently in control and losing weight beautifully.
No maths needed! We’ve done it all for you, here, on Slimming World Online, on the Slimming World app, and – if you can’t find the product you’re looking for – use the Slimming World scanner to find it in a beep!

Eating out is part of everyday life, whether it’s grabbing a bite after work or joining friends on a special occasion. The great news for Food Optimisers is that, with Free Food and low-Syn dishes on almost every menu, dining out really is a doddle!
For top eating out tips, see pages 30 to 33 of Discover your freedom with Slimming World.
Once you become a Food Optimising expert, you’ll find yourself making different choices around food (and activity too). You might find your tastes change, you’ll almost certainly find your choices change. Where, in the very early days of Food Optimising, your 10 or so daily Syns may be used for favourites you feel you simply couldn’t live without – like crisps, chocolate, alcohol or cake – you’ll very soon find yourself switching to healthier choices, enjoying more of your personal savvy Syns.
Savvy Syns are still Syns – they still have the same Syn value and need weighing, measuring and counting using the average values, as usual. Importantly though, they provide some beneficial nutrients or they’re more satisfying than other Syns. They also tend to be ‘safer’ choices – less likely to catapult you back into old ways of eating that caused you to gain weight in the first place.
Everyone’s savvy Syns will be different because they’re personal to you. What’s true for every member, however, is that with unlimited Free Food, your measured Healthy Extras and making the switch towards enjoying savvy Syns more often, you really will be building healthy habits that will see you safely to your dream weight and – most importantly – help you stay there for life.
