As mobile healthcare professionals are constantly away from a primary care environment, providing them with the necessary information, equipment and medicine is essential.
Accessing Patient Records - In order to maintain patient safety and the quality of care in the home, healthcare workers need access to up-to-the-minute information that is most often stored in the hospital’s backend systems. Schedule Visits - The use of mobile computers allow for electronic schedules to be sent each morning and easily updated throughout the day to accommodate emergencies. Location Tracking - GPS allows agencies to: monitor caregiver location to improve worker safety; document proof of visitation through the automatic collection of geostamps that verify evidence of a caregivers location; and create route plans that minimise mileage, fuel costs and vehicle wear and tear.

Pharmacies and doctors surgeries are the first point of call for a patient receiving care. Using secure technology to gather patient information increases confidentiality and accurate labelling reduces the risk of error. Specimen Collection - Barcode technologies enable precise sampling, labelling and analysis of biological specimens, ensuring the correct sample is placed in the appropriate container. This reduces the risk associated with human error and ultimately results in faster and more accurate medication administration. Inventory Management - Under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, pharmacies must be able to capture and maintain transaction information, transaction history and a transaction statement for each drug product received for 6 years from the date of the transaction. Medication Dispensing - The medication is checked up to three times in the pharmacy before it is given to the patient; firstly when the medicine is taken from stock, secondly to ensure that the right medication is issued for the right client and then lastly, both the prescription and the drug are scanned again to make sure the right patient receives the right medication.

Secondary CarePrimary Care
Hospital care, or secondary care, refers to unplanned emergency care, surgery or planned specialist medical care. Technology ensures records are securely logged and updated throughout the patients’ stay, reducing the risk of medical errors. Admissions - Positive patient identification starts at hospital admissions where the barcode wristband can be printed and applied to the patient. With GSM’s healthcare solutions, you can start each patient’s hospital experience with confidence. Bedside Point of Care - Patient safety demands accurate, positive patient, medication and specimen identification. When collecting patient data in a Healthcare environment is it not desirable to have repeated beeping as this can disturb the patient. ‘Good read’ confirmation can be delivered through Green Spot technology to ensure the patient isn’t disturbed, particularly during the night. Medication Administration - Mobile computers and barcode scanners in Primary Care environments require rigourous cleaning. Disinfectant Ready devices and those with Antimicrobial casing ensure the devices stay protected during the harsh cleaning process across Healthcare environments.

Printer Media Supplies
Mobile Specimen Collection
The process of specimen collection relies on mobility; a Healthcare specific mobile
printer and barcode scanner. The medical practitioner can scan the wristband to
easily identify and verify the patients health records on the spot and then scan their
own ID badge to log the specimen collection.
Point-of-care barcode labelling is an important strategy to help prevent errors that
can occur from wrong identification.
Patient Bedside
Patient bedside delivers various challenges when it comes to media supplies. For
example, blood bag labelling must adhere to FDA guidelines for Uniform Labelling
of Blood and Blood Components. Multi-purpose labels can produce patient record
and case study labels. Wristbands are also necessary in Secondary care to ensure
patient data is easily accessible by any medical professional by simply scanning the
2D code on the wristband. These wristbands come in various colours, to indicate
allergies for example. Genuine medical wristbands withstand exposure to moisture
and hand sanitiser; both present in any Healthcare environment.
Laboratory/Pharmacy
Labels used in Laboratory or Pharmacy environments often need to withstand
chemical, heat and light exposure, as well as sterilisation. Some applications
require the label to withstand temperatures as low as -196°C, resisting liquid
nitrogen as well as freeze/thaw cycles often associated with laboratory
environments. Barcode labelling of specimens not only delivers accuracy and
error-prevention benefits at the point-of-care, it also saves time, enabling lab staff
to spend more time on clinical rather than clerical activities.
It is always recommended that genuine print media supplies are used in Honeywell and Zebra printers to ensure the upkeep of the hardware. Purchasing healthcare wristbands and labels alongside print hardware from one manufacturer can also help to ensure that any issues are dealt with promptly and correctly by one point of contact.
