Odiham is proud to have such an important association with Magna Carta 1215and Simon de Montfort’s Parliament of 1265. For many this connection to importantevents in history will come as a surprise.

The project is driven by The Odiham Society supported by InOdiham, OdihamParish Council, HCC, MagnaCarta800th and in close partnership with many local

associations, schools, the churches, shops and businesses. Our aim is to promotethe beautiful Parish and its historic heritage.

The magnicent Odiham Embroidery, depicting 800 years of local history from thetime of Magna Carta and reecting the history of England as it was played out in ourparish, will be unveiled in the Library by the High Sheriff of Hampshire on 16th May.

Many of the events over the weekend of 22-25 MAY will centre round All SaintsChurch, The Bury, the Canal and Odiham Castle. You could visit the Flower Festival in

the Church with displays created by local groups, or join in a parade led by King Johnand peruse market stalls in the Bury while watching entertainers and re-enactors atthe Medieval Themed Day. Meet the Maker Marianne Dolan talks to The Odiham Oracle about A Space Of My Own, acreative space in Hartley Wintney offering a range of classes to people of all

    ages.

A Space of My Own is an interesting concept; how did the business comeabout?Back in 2010, when my twin daughters were small, I was presented with anopportunity to start afresh. I’ve always been crafty and I have training experienceso I started with a pre-school franchise and then added after-school clubs andparties. Our house was soon bursting at the seams but I was lucky enough tofnd a building tucked away behind the High Street in Hartley Wintney; that waswhen I really got carried away! It’s still just me but I’m developing links withother craftspeople like Renaissance Interiors and The Crafty Nomad, both ofwhom run classes at A Space Of My Own.

What workshops and services do you offer?Using as much recycled or re-purposed material as possible I offer: eveningclasses for adults, pre-school classes, after-school & Saturday art clubs, children’s parties and holiday classes, freestyle sessions, one-to-one tuition

    and bespoke classes for groups.

What skills can people learn and what’s popular?Sewing and embroidery in various forms along with knitting and crochet areprobably the most popular. I also offer printing, painting and drawing, needleand wet felting, decoupage, bookbinding, willow weaving, lampshademaking, up cycling and all sorts of other one-off creative activities.

What do you love about runningyour own business?I really enjoy the variety;everything from accounts to yarnordering is my job so I’m neverbored. It’s also lovely seeingstudents delight in their newskills and it’s brilliant when theircreations turn out even betterthan I’d imagined! My mainchallenge is resisting playing with

the stock when I’m supposed tobe doing the fling!

When a press release landed in my inbox

announcing that The Crown in Old Basing had

been listed in the 2015 Good Food Guide’s ‘Top50 Pubs in the UK’, my taste buds pricked with

excitement. Under the ownership of head chefs

Chris Barnes and Tom Wilson, The Crown has

been making quite a name for itself since it opened

in 2012. Local lads Chris and Tom started their

careers at Basingstoke College of Technology and

spent ve years at the rather splendid LainstonHouse Hotel, near Winchester; a noticeable

in uence in the classy and well-executed tasting

menu we would sample that evening. On arrival

we were greeted by Fallon, the front of house

manager (for those who remember the hit 80s TV

show, yes her mother was a fan of Dynasty), who

showed us to our table in a cosy corner of thecandlelit dining room. To give us a ‘complete taste

of The Crown’ Chris and Tom had prepared a

delectable nine course tasting menu. This evening

I was dining with Polly, who was beginning to think

that perhaps it wasn’t the best week to start her

new year health and tness regime with no carbs

after 6pm! Alas, she was going to have to grin andbear it as a sharing platter promptly arrived laden

with soft homemade cheddar bread, avoursome

rapeseed oil (move over olive) for dipping, root

vegetable crisps, and crispy pork rind with sweet

apple sauce. The Crown is passionate about using

local ingredients and suppliers. Our tasty starters

featured crispy breaded Tunworth, a avoursomeCamembert-style cheese from just down the

road, and organic Stockbridge mushroom tart

with rosary goats’ cheese and picked red onions.

Warm homemade Scotch egg had a perfect yolky

ooze but the spicy homemade ketchup required

a tad more heat to suit the hot sauce a cionadosin us. Heat aside, it was ruddy delicious. My dish of

the evening had to be the house oaked smoked

Loch Duart salmon with potted shrimp terrine,

the saltiness of the capers offset by the sweetness

of shallot; I could probably eat this dish every day.

Sea Bream was soft and aky, livened up with

delicate shavings of chorizo, caper butter, con tpotatoes and greens, while roast rump of English

lamb was pink, succulent and well seasoned,

served with crispy shoulder and celeriac, not one,

but two ways. Thankfully for the waistline, dessert

arrived as a simple spoonful of tangy, lemon

posset with mandarin jelly and a lightly spiced

ginger granola (I’ll be back for a larger portionnext time), and a rich, velvety chocolate fondant

with boozy cherries and vanilla ice cream. All the

dishes we sampled are available at the pub and we

couldn’t nd fault with the quality or execution.

Positioned on the main thoroughfare, The Crown is at the heart of village life, pulsating with

culinary expertise and ingenuity. The residents must be rejoicing, after all, who doesn’t love a

good ‘local’, where the food is exceptional and you’re guaranteed to be greeted with a smile.

    Buryfields Infant School

In year 2 we started the year looking at Odiham, the placewhere we live and go to school. We looked at a range of maps ofthe area and identified the physical and human features. Wealso compared Odiham with Basingstoke and thought about howthe two places are different and why. We really enjoyed ourwalk to Odiham village where we could observe and record firsthand the historic buildings such as the stocks and the pesthouse. We then applied all our new knowledge to write a posterabout Odiham to attract visitors.

Year 2 Out and About in Odiham

In science we learnt about keeping fit and healthy. We enjoyed

conducting a survey to find out the most popular fruit juice. We also drew and labelled healthy lunch boxes, discussedthe effect of exercise and made healthy pizzas.
