â Canadian Classification of Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Surgical Procedures82-562-XPE or XPF (Paper: English or French)ISSN / ISBN: 0-660-11938-2Occasional

The Classification (CCP) was originally produced by Statistics Canada in 1978 to meet Canadian needs fora procedural classification to be used in conjunction with the World Health Organizations InternationalClassification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (or ICD-9).

The CCP, which was published in both English and French, includes a tabular list, divided into 18 chapters ofcategories and subcategories, and an alphabetical index. Since the initial implementation of the CCP in 1979,all of the errata produced up to that time have been incorporated. With advances in surgical technology, suchas the increased use of the endoscopic surgical approach, it has been necessary to produce two additionalerrata/updates since the reprint, the most recent being in early 1992. Recently a second printing of theFrench version became necessary. As with the English, all previously issued errata have been incorporatedinto the second printing and some previously undetected typographical errors have been corrected. In addition, the new and modified rubrics of the 1992 update have been included in the second printing and may beidentified by a special diamond symbol.

3.4 General Social Survey

s The General Social Survey was initiated in order to reduce gaps in the statistical information system, particularly those related to socio-economic trends. The GSS has two principal objectives: to gather dataon trends in Canadian society over time, and to provide information on specific policy issues of interest.

To achieve these objectives, the GSS has three components: core, focus, and classification:

- Core content is directed primarily at monitoring long-term social trends by measurement of temporalchanges in living conditions and well-being. Core subject areas recur, usually every fifth year.

- Focus content is aimed at meeting the second objective of the GSS, namely to provide informationtouching directly on a specific policy, issue or social problem.

- Classification content provides the means to delineate population groups and is used in the analysisof core and focus data.

3.5 National Population Health Survey

s The National Population Health Survey (NPHS) is designed to collect information related to the health of theCanadian population. The first cycle of data collection began in 1994, and will continue every second yearthereafter.

The survey program collects not only cross-sectional information, but also data from a panel of individuals attwo-year intervals. It is composed of three component parts: the survey of households; the survey ofinstitutions; and the survey of the North.

The three target populations are: 1) household residents in all provinces (with the principal exclusion ofpopulation s on Indian Reserves, Canadian Forces Bases and some remote areas in Quebec and Ontario; 2)long-term residents expected to stay longer than six months in health care facilities with four beds or more inall provinces (with the principal exclusion of the Yukon and the Northwest Territories; and 3) the Northernpopulation including household residents in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories (with the principal exclusionof populations on Indian Reserves, Canadian Forces Bases and some of the most remote areas of theTerritories).

The first cycle examined health status, use of health services, risk factors, and demographic and socioeconomiccharacteristics such as age, sex and household income. The second cycle will provide new cross-sectionalinformation on health care access, and longitudinal data for the study of factors influencing good health andillness.

The statistics in this publication show that, over the period from 1981 to 1991, marriage has come toappear less and less necessary to the lives of Canadian couples. Common-law unions have increased.Canadians have shown increasingly less tendency to marry a first time, and those whose marriages hadended were less likely to subsequently remarry. Conversely, the divorce rate has not changed significantly,so those who married in 1991 seem assured of a marriage as stable as those who married in 1981. Thestatistics are based on multi-state life tables and include the proportion of marriages ending in divorce andthe average duration of lifetime spent in each marital status.Geographic Coverage: Canada: (Geographic Region)Subject Term(s): Age; Age groups; Common law unions; Deaths; Divorces; First marriages; Length ofmarriage; Life expectancy; Marital status; Marriages; Probability; Remarriages; Sex; Trends; Unattachedindividuals; Widowed persons

â Life Tables, Canada and Provinces84-537-XPB (Paper: bilingual)84-537-XDB (Diskette: bilingual)ISSN / ISBN: 0-660-54896-8Occasional

The present report contains the tables generated on the basis of age-sex-specific mortality rates for Canadaand the provinces prevailing in the period 1990-1992. Life tables for the first year of life have beenproduced separately by sex for Canada as a whole. Detailed life tables by single years of age, for malesand females, have been produced for Canada and all the provinces except Prince Edward Island becauseof the small population and number of deaths. Abridged life tables using five-year groupings have beenproduced for males, for females and for both sexes combined, for Canada and all the provinces. Thesetables are available as shelf tables. Because of the small sizes of their populations, life tables were notconstructed for Yukon and Northwest Territories. Their population and deaths were included in the calculationof life tables for Canada. This report explains the methods used to produce the 1990-1992 life tables.Data sources and data files that were created during the construction of the life tables will be describedmore extensively in a user guide to the computer programs that will be available later from the authors ofthis document.

l Canadian Birth Data Base(A file used for long term medical follow-up studies)

The Canadian Birth Data Base is a computer file, created from birth records reported by all Canadianprovinces and territories, into a format suitable for record linkage to other files. This means standardizingand upgrading the name and other identifying fields on the birth registration files received from 1985onward for each of the Canadian provinces/territories. This file will be updated annually. It presentlycontains approximately 4 million records of live births.

In conjunction with the above file is also the Canadian Stillbirth Data Base. This file has been prepared forrecord linkage for the years 1985 to the present and contains approximately 26,000 records. This file willalso be updated annually.

Both files contain name information plus sex, event date and place, gestational age, birth weight, number ofbirths, birth type, mothers residence, age of parents, birth year and place of parents, mothers maritalstatus, and mothers education (Quebec). The availability of items may vary by province and year.

The development of these files will allow many concerns regarding maternal health, child health, occupationaland environmental factors, and the consequences of new reproductive technologies and risk factors to beinvestigated.

The Canadian Birth Data Base and Canadian Stillbirth Data Base are available at Statistics Canada tocarry out approved projects. Most of these studies are carried out on a cost recovery basis using thefacilities (sophisticated software, machine-time and experienced personnel) at Statistics Canada, HealthStatistics Division. Strict confidentiality of all records is maintained in accordance with the Statistics Actand record linkage policies.

s Absence From Work Survey (Annual from 1976)Annual Survey

The Absence from Work Survey was designed primarily to fulfill the objectives of Human ResourcesDevelopment Canada. They sponsor the qualified wage loss replacement plan which applies to employerswho have their own private plans to cover employee wages lost due to sickness, accident, etc. Employerswho fall under the plan are granted a reduction in their quotas payable to the Unemployment InsuranceCommission. The data generated from the responses to the supplement will provide input to determine therates for quota reductions for qualified employers.

Although the Absence from Work Survey collects information on absences from work due to illness, accident or pregnancy, it does not provide a complete picture of people who have been absent from workfor these reasons because the concepts and definitions have been developed specifically for the needs ofthe client. Absences in this survey are defined as being at least two weeks in length, and respondents areonly asked the three reasons for their most recent absence and the one preceding it.

Status: Forthcoming Autumn 1998

This CD-ROM will be the first Canada-wide publication of occupational mortality risks produced inCanada. A previous publication for the province of British Columbia (Occupational Mortality in BritishColumbia 1950-1978) was published in 1986 as Statistics Canada Catalogue 84-544 (ISBN 0-660-59382-32872-X).

This new publication will help identify occupational groups across Canada with excessive mortality due tospecific causes. It will also provide a Canadian monitoring system to detect previously unsuspectedassociations between, say, cancer and occupation and provide a powerful tool for both generating andtesting hypotheses.

The publication will give the results of a longitudinal follow-up of the 10% Canadian Occupational Cohort,a sample of 700,000 individuals, both women and men, in the Canadian workforce during the period1965-71, linked to the Canadian Mortality Data Base (CMDB) for 1965-1991.

This publication is likely to be of interest to the medical and research community, workers compensationand safety boards, ministries of health and labour, regulatory agencies and the general public.
