Health and well-being at work, the raw materials of productivity

As working life and society change, occupational healthcare must also develop continuously. This is also supported by the results of our survey: decision-makers require their occupational healthcare partners to offer more preventive services and be better familiar with their customers’ business operations at a practical and strategic level. We have responded to this need by developing our occupational healthcare and well-being services even further, and introducing concrete tools to improve productivity. We also believe that a uniform service package is easier and more productive for our customers.

Better future at work By taking care of the well-being of the employee and working community, we can have a significant impact on productivity. For the individual, well-being refers to health and a high quality of life throughout the career. The well-being of the working community can be affected by developing supervisory skills and leadership. Our involving and activating operating model helps to react quickly to problems, anticipate and develop operations comprehensively in a manner which produces benefits to all parties involved. When selected and allocated correctly, investments in occupational healthcare and well-being can produce returns tenfold.

Control information and productivityCustomer-oriented reporting and various electronic services offer support for management. By analyzing organizational productivity factors, we can delve deeper into the possibilities of developing personnel productivity. The development of occupational healthcare, well-being and productivity is assisted by information about 3.3 million Finnish people. We have the largest database of the well-being of Finnish people and affecting factors.

Local quality at a national levelThanks to our most extensive unit network in Finland, we can serve our customers both locally and nationally. We take pride in our high level of customer satisfaction and service quality. Of our current customers, up to 92 percent would recommend our services.

Take a look at our services related to the future at work. Let us build a better working life together!

Customer needs as the starting point The Finnish working life is changing and developing. More often, at least some work is carried out outside the workplace, such as in customer premises, while traveling and at home. Temporary work, virtual networks and remote work have become parts of everyday life. The need to lengthen careers stretches the age gap at workplaces. People of different ages have different wishes and expectations regarding supervisory work and tools.

People show symptoms at workplaces; sick leave deteriorates productivity. Moreover, the public sector is cutting back its resources. Changes in the working life and society require changes in companies and other organizations.

One of the most important challenges in occupational healthcare. How can we take care of occupational healthcare and well-being, while producing benefits for the individual, working community and organization?

The society also reacts to changes in working life. The strategy drawn up by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy contains a vision of the Finnish working life at the highest European level by 2020. One of the most important aspects in this vision is the recognition of the impact of well-being at work, health and good working conditions on productivity and the appeal of working life.

Terveystalo is strongly involved in this by investing in development and concrete solutions. We are working for

the well-being of employees, and the competitiveness of Finnish companies and society.

What is the best occupational healthcare like in 2015?*

Closer and more goal-oriented cooperation between customer and service provider

Focus towards more preventive work

Better understanding of the customer’s business field and operations

More productive operations, verification of results, more developed reporting

”Our company’s leading principle was to fix diffe-rent aspects related to occupational healthcare and working capacity. As a result of our cooperation, we are making systematic investments in the working capacity and well-being of our employees.

Our 170 supervisors from all over Finland took part in working capacity coaching organized with Terveystalo. The competence of our supervisors is already reflected in higher productivity.”

Sari Kulmala, HR Manager

Achievements in 2011–2012

Reduced sick leave, hundreds of thousands of euros in savings

Sick days reduced by 23% (some 4,500 days)

Sick leave certificates reduced by 10%

Health percentage up by 3.3 percentage points

”One day of sick leave costs an average of EUR 300–350 for the company. Disability causes annual costs of EUR 20 billion for the national economy.”Guy Ahonen, Finnish Institute of Occupational Health

Well-being as a competitive factorAccording to the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, the financial cost of work left undone is 2–14% of salary costs of companies. However, only 15% of companies manage well-being at work in an active and systematic manner.*

These surveys and experience show that investments in well-being at work can significantly

improve productivity at an annual level, and have an impact on costs arising from sick leave and pension premiums. As a result, it is important that well-being at work and productivity are developed systematically as part of the business strategy.

Occupational healthcare and well-being at work are fundamental pillars of sustainable development. They produce benefits for all labor parties, including society.

*Aura Ahonen, Ilmarinen: Strategisen hyvinvoinnin tila Suomessa 2011 (Strategic wellness in Finland 2011)

An involving and activating operating model leads to a future at workOur customer cooperation is continuous, systematic and target-oriented. It is based on our involving and activating operating model. The objective of the model is to guarantee the health of individuals, the well-being of the working community, and the operations and productivity of companies.

For our customers, the involving and activating operating model offers a comprehensive and developing solution. It covers all areas of high-quality occupational healthcare activities – from health to well-being and the develop-ment of productivity. The operating model guides how companies take care of occupational healthcare and how their personnel develop strategically in the long-term, having an impact on the competitiveness of companies.

Contributions to occupational healthcare turn into investmentsThe operating model is built around responsive, proactive and developing operations. It is always based on statutory occupational healthcare. Any successive levels supple-ment the needs of companies according to their business development strategy.

The objective of the involving and activating operating model is to shift the focus of occupational healthcare activities from responsive to proactive and further to productive activities that develop the well-being of the entire organization.

Through organizational development, the efficiency rate shifts from the minimization of costs arising from illnesses and absences to a more productive organization.

Treatment teams specialized in occupational healthcare and other healthcare experts and account managers ensure that services and objectives are fulfilled. Success through well-being at workWell-being at work is an important part of comprehensive occupational healthcare activities that support the health and well-being of individuals and the entire working community. A well-being organization is more successful and productive.

According to numerous studies, well-being at work has an undisputed impact on effectiveness. Well-being at work is linked with coping at work, sick leave and even occupational accidents. As costs from employees who do not feel well at work are reflected in lower productivity, well-being is an area worth investing in.

Good supervisory work and leadership are crucial factors for the well-being of an organization. Well-being at work can be seen in the working atmosphere – through enthu-siasm, creativity, motivation and commitment. Well-being at work is not always created by itself. It requires system-atic development and cooperation.

Terveystalo Well-being at Work services often supple-ment and extend the measures initiated by occupational healthcare services. Utilizing the involving and activating

operating model, we can support the entire customer organization – from individuals to the working community and supervisors. The services consist of diverse develop-ment solutions for management, supervisory work, the working community and personnel.

Well-being measures are planned in close cooperation with the customer organization. The best results can be produced when well-being at work is developed system-atically, taking all perspectives into account. Information about the working capacity of individuals and the organi-zation obtained through occupational healthcare activities offers help in selecting and planning the correct measures so that they can be targeted effectively. Terveystalo’s Pro-ductivity Analysis offers thorough information about the impact of well-being at work on productivity and supports the planning of well-being at work services.

Productivity is made by peopleWhen the personnel and their well-being at work are led from the business point of view and as part of the company’s strategy, productivity and results will improve. The same resources can produce added value for customers. The management of productivity requires clear goals and indicators.

Terveystalo Productivity service offers solutions to measure, analyze, develop and productively manage the personnel productivity of companies and organiza-tions. The service makes it easier to draw a big picture of productivity and supports productive management.

Information supports the development of creativity Terveystalo has extensive information about the health of 3.3 million Finnish people, as well as Finnish work through nearly 500,000 employees and 16,000 employers. Utili-zing this background information and combining it with medical records and business analytics and key indicators forms a profitable starting point for analyzing and devel-oping productivity.

Working ability and will to work support productivity

A precondition for profitable operations is a capable and willing personnel. A good working capacity allows employees to give their best, whereas reduced working capacity lowers their input. Factors that reduce working capacity include aging, illnesses, lack of competence and dissatisfaction with work. Will to work comprises passion, enthusiasm and joy. Long-term commitment with the organization, satisfaction and motivation are indications of willingness to work.

The working capacity and will to work support produc-tivity: a healthy and motivated employee works more effectively, while a committed employee does this longer. A decreased will to work and working capacity reduce productivity: inefficiency and unfinished tasks increase.

Work defines the requirements for working ability

Ease of work, faultless process-es and quality are the basic pillars of working. Considering the will to work, work man-agement and the possibility to have an influence are impor-tant for the development of individual work.

Competence and its continuous improvement offer keys for development.

.

Health forms the basis of the working ability of the personnel

Good health starts from genes, individual ways of living and, more widely, life manage-ment. Occupational healthcare supports healthy choices and guides towards good working methods throughout the career and, in the event of illnesses, guarantees rapid treatment, rehabilitation and controlled return to work.

The working commu-nity and culture sup-port working ability and the will to work

A good working communi-ty is a great asset! A good atmosphere can be created by following clear rules. This can be strengthened by working together.

Good management in a key role

This refers to clear objectives, their monitoring and contin-uous learning towards better operations. Good supervisory work is fair, respects individ-uals, and comprises coaching with other people.

Terveystalo’s key points in well-being at work and productivityAreas that affect working capacity and will to work must be developed in balance. Working capacity consists of health and the capability required by work. Will to work comprises passion, enthusiasm and joy.

Case Raskone Oy

”The clear summary offered by Terveystalo Productivity Analysis indicated what needed to be developed from the point of view of well-being at work.
