A checkup is a great way to prevent or diag-nose diseases that could have lasting, harmfuleffects on your body. Even if you exercise reg-ularly and eat healthy, it may not be enough. You ultimately need to ensure that you have aclean bill of health every six months.

The Department of Health and HumanServices reiterates this idea with the followingexplanation: "By getting the right health serv-ices, screenings, and treatments, you are tak-ing steps that help your chances for living alonger, healthier life. Your age, health andfamily history, lifestyle choices (i.e. what youeat, how active you are, whether you smoke),and other important factors impact what andhow often you need services and screenings."

This is an important point to understand,as your life literally depends on it.

Regular doctor checkups are especiallyimportant if you are over the age of 60, as thisis when the onset of many debilitating dis-eases occur.

It's not enough to visit the doctor onlywhen you feel sick. You need to be regularlychecked for cancer, diabetes or bone diseasesthat could ultimately affect the way that youlive your life.

People who get a diagnosis for their illness-es earlier in the process have a much betterchance of beating them and returning to livethe healthy lifestyle that they have grownaccustomed to.

KNOW YOUR BACKGROUND

Take your family's history with medicalproblems into account as well when decidinghow long to go between checkups. If therehave been incidents with certain kinds of can-cer, heart attacks, or blood diseases amongstyour relatives in the past, your doctor needsto know about them so he can properly test

for problems that might occur. You must be especially cautious when there

has been a history of chronic illness in yourfamily because you have the predispositiontowards acquiring harmful medical problemsthat could affect your process of aging.

LIFESTYLE FACTORSIf you frequently smoke tobacco or drink

alcohol, it is imperative that you see yourfamily physician at least every six months, ifnot more frequently. Tobacco and alcoholwreak havoc on your lungs, liver, heart, andmany other vital organs that are very impor-tant to your health.

Lung or liver cancer are among the biggestrepercussions that smoking or drinking canbring about. Short of quitting altogether, thenext best thing that you can do for yourself isto visit your doctor on a regular basis to makesure that no problems have begun to arise.

Blood pressure and cholesterol are twoother health problems that could arise out ofnot going to see your doctor on a regularbasis. People with high blood pressure or highcholesterol don't even have to be livingunhealthy lifestyles for a problem to arise.Your doctor can do tests and order blood tobe drawn so that the determination can bereached regarding whether you have one ofthese debilitating illnesses or not.

There really are a great deal of benefits toseeing your family doctor at least once a year, even if you are healthy. The piece of mind andreassurance that you get is worth the cost ofthe visit alone.

In addition, you are able to more quicklystart the treatment process if you do havesome kind of problem. Doctors are trained togive you the best in quality healthcare, so youwould be best advised to get regular checkupsin order to ensure that you are completelyhealthy.

CHECKUPS ARE AMUST, EVEN IF

YOU THINKYOU’RE HEALTHY

Regular doctor’s checkups are especially important for peo-ple over age 60, who may be at increased risk for the onsetof serious health problems.

our health is the most important thing that you have, and youshould always do your best to protect it. This’s why you shouldalways schedule regular checkups with your doctor, even if youthink that you're healthyY

A question that often arises, however, is whenthe best time of the day is to burn the maximumamount of calories. Most people who exerciseregularly choose to do it in the morning whenthe threat of outside interference is at its lowest.Morning exercisers like the fact that it makesthem feel more awake and alert throughout theday without the sluggish feeling that plagues somany people.

DAILY ENERGY BOOSTRenowned diet and fitness coach Jorge Cruz

said that "your brain craves oxygen in the morn-ing, which is why early day exercising is so ben-eficial."

Your brain needs this oxygen to help youbegin your normal daily activities, and whenyou feed it with coffee, there are little to no ben-efits that can be derived from roasted coffeegrounds. The body will eventually crash becausethe brain has not received the nutrients that itneeds to guide you through the day.

MSNBC recently did an experiment in whichthey found that early morning exercise canactually help insomnia as well. The body willneed to be in a restful state after a day of exer-cise and hard labor, so you want to get in yourworkout as quickly as you can before youexpend all your energy throughout the day.

This will help you to burn additional caloriesthat you might not have been able to burn hadyou simply waited to do your exercise afterwork. You will also feel more energized at workbecause your body is now receiving the extrasupply of oxygen that it needs to handle the rig-ors of your workday.

People debate this next benefit, but it shouldbe a point that is at least brought to the surface. Some people believe morning exercise has the

capability to burn extra calories because there isno food in your stomach, but there has been noconcrete evidence to support this.

While this idea does seem to have somemerit, you want to remember that you don'twant to burn up protein as well, because pro-tein is what muscle is primarily made of.

Burning protein is simply like losing musclefrom your skeletal structure. Therefore, itbecomes essential that you are careful whenstarting an exercise program in the morning, asyou want to gauge how well your body willreact.

LESS MENTAL FATIGUEBangor University in the United Kingdom

recently did a study in which it found that peo-ple with high-stress jobs should consider exer-cise in the morning rather than at night afterwork. The reason underlying these findings isthat physiologists have determined that astressful day at work can leave one feeling anoverriding sense of mental fatigue, which leadsto lesser amounts of exercise in terms of bothtime and intensity.

If you are regularly tired after a long day atwork, think about exercising in the morning soyou can get in bed and get the recovery sleepthat you need at night.

If you are looking for a quick morning pick-me-up, search no further than your local streetsand sidewalks. These provide the perfect settingto not only get in your workout but also give youthe energy that you need to make it through along, tough day. While it is important that youdo not use 100 percent intensity while exercis-ing in the morning, there are just too many ben-efits that morning exercise can provide for younot to use it to your advantage.

Start the day rightMORNING EXERCISE JUMP STARTS YOUR DAY

The positive effect that exercise has on our lives has

been well documented in trade journals, magazines

and television shows around the world.

Many people think that employinga personal trainer is too expensive orthat they aren't necessary in the gen-eral scope of a healthier lifestyle. Butit’s actually a common myth that per-sonal trainers are overpriced.

Fred Klinge, chairman of theHealth and Registry Board at theAmerican College of Sports Medicine, said in an interview with WebMD,"It's not just about weight lifting andcardio work anymore. It's more aboutassistance in developing a healthyand fit lifestyle."

This type of advice is usually onlyavailable from a personal trainer, soenlisting their services is generally agood idea if you are looking to slimdown.

THE ADVANTAGESWhy should people pay for person-

al trainers, though, when they can

simply learn from their friends whohave been going to the gym for years?

The answer is that it can save timeand reduce injuries. Instead of spend-ing your time trying to figure out howto safely use complicated, high-techequipment, you can simply follow thetrainer’s instructions. This helps youmake the most of your limited work-out time and can keep you frominjuring yourself from a simple lack ofknowledge.

BUILDING MUSCLEProfessionals who oversee your

training habits can also be very bene-ficial if you are trying to gain leanmuscle mass.

Lean muscle helps to burn themost amount of calories while mak-ing you look and feel more fit. Inorder to understand each exercisethat you are doing and what muscle it

is helping, it is important that you canunderstand what the personal traineris telling you.

MEDICAL REASONSIf you are someone who has suf-

fered a medical setback, such as aheart attack or stroke, you are a primecandidate to enlist the services of apersonal trainer.

These professionals are able toaccurately assess your current level ofhealth and determine what the bestcourse of action will be to get youfeeling better.

It can definitely be a challenge tostep back into a gym when you havejust experienced a hardship that isextremely nerve-racking. For this rea-son, you want to make sure that youare not overdoing your exercise, and alicensed trainer will easily be able tomake that assessment.

Get the star treatment

By teaching you how to exercisecorrectly, a personal trainer notonly helps you avoid injuries atthe gym. They also save you timeand keep your workouts morefocused on your goals.

Not only is your metabolisminvolved in this procedure, but thetype of food you eat is just asimportant. Your metabolism canburn the calories very quickly, butif you are taking in 5,000 caloriesper day, it's not going to make adifference.

What if you’re running short ontime, though? There are many sim-ple ways to burn fat quickly andefficiently that don't take a lot oftime and effort.

It is important to remember thatyour sole purpose in trying to burnfat is to get your metabolism to apoint where it is burning largeamounts of calories even when youare sitting or sleeping.

Dr. James Pendergraft, M.D.,founder of the Orlando Women'sClinic, defines what a good meta-bolic rate can do for your body.

"It depends upon the activitiesthat you engage in, and some activ-ities can really make our metabo-lism rates to increase and therebyburn fat in our body faster."

It's important to note that he isnot referring strictly to exercise butother, simpler forms of daily activi-ty that can help us in the weightand fat loss process.

Here are a few of them:

DRINK WATERDrinking plenty of water is the

first step toward burning off fatquickly and efficiently. It is veryimportant that you have enoughwater in your body at all times dueto the fact that a lack of water canultimately cause your body to storemore fat in order to help your bodytemperature to stay at normal lev-els.

When your metabolism is up tospeed and is working diligentlyto help you burn calories, yourbody will naturally staywarm.

Keeping the levels of water in yourbody high enough to achieve thisstate is very important in theweight loss process.

EAT PROTEINHaving ample

amounts of pro-tein in your

diet is alsoanother

good

When trying to lose weight, the main goal of any exerciseprogram should be to increase your metabolism enough towhere it is burning more calories than you are consuming.

habit to get into and does notinvolve much physical exertion.

Dr. Pendergraft points out that

"protein can help inincreasing the metabolismrate in human beings twoto three times more thanthat of carbohydrates."

Foods that are commonplace intoday's world are usually saturatedwith carbohydrates, and we alwaysget plenty of those, but it is actuallythe protein in our food that ulti-mately helps us lose weight quicklyand efficiently.

GET ENOUGH SLEEPYou want to make sure that you

are getting good amounts of sleepat night in order to give yourmetabolism the break that it needsfrom working all day.

According to Dr. Pendergraft,"like every human being, the

metabolism process in our bodyalso needs some rest. So it is advis-able that you do take in good sleepat regular intervals so as to main-tain the metabolism rates in ourbody."

Your body is able to burn a lot ofcalories when it is in a resting state,so you don't want to deprive it of itscapabilities to function sufficiently.

WATCH YOUR DIETIn addition to the above sugges-

tions, you also will want to includethe regular weight loss suggestionsof eating a healthy diet and makingsure to get plenty of exercise, but itis also very important to listen toyour body.

When your body is telling youthat it is tired, you should rest. Ifyou feel a burst of energy through-out the day, go outside for a jog, asyour metabolism is just begging tobe used.

Following these steps will helpyou to not only lose weight but alsolive a healthier life.

LOOK TO LOCALLY GROWN ORGANIC PRODUCE FOR HEALTH AND FLAVOR

Now there is clear evidence that eating organic pro-duce is better for you than produce that is farmed usingchemical pesticides and other insecticides that signifi-cantly reduce the amount of nutrients that can bederived from the produce.

HARSH EFFECTSA recent study conducted by Princeton University

concluded that "pesticides used in growing commoncrops such as fruit, corn, cotton, soybeans, and tobaccohave been found to have high toxicity to birds, mam-mals, and fish. Pesticide use kills not only pests, but also

their natural enemies, many of which arenow endangered due to ingested toxinsand loss of food."

We, as human beings, are ingesting thesame food as these animals. If they areharming the natural wildlife that severely, what are they doing to us?

The Food Quality Protection Act, whichwas drafted in 1996, states that most of thechemicals that are used in pesticides, herbi-cides, and insecticides "present unacceptablyhigh health risks, particularly to infants and chil-dren."

Agreat trend is happening in local farms all over the UnitedStates. More and more people are becoming preoccupied withthe notion that eating organic foods is better for them.

Randy Norris, Ben Judson, Lindsey Edmunds, Ned Enyeart,

Mark E. Hollingshead,

The fact of the matter is that no longer is itjust relegated to the fruits and vegetables thatare grown in America's Heartland. Chemicalsalso affect the meat and dairy products thatwe consume because more farmers are feed-ing their cattle steroids and growth hormone, something that is believed to be safe — butalso controversial.

Consuming foods and beverages that comedirectly from animals that are raised withoutthe use of these hormones is thought to besafer to the overall health and well-being ofthe population. There are questions aboutwhether the steroids and hormones can beharmful to humans once ingested, and whilethe debate over hormones is far from settled, organic meats can eliminate worries about it.

LOOK LOCALLY

As the United States grows ever morehealth conscious, it is clear that somethingneeds to be done about the non-organic pro-duce being grown in the United States. Thereare many advantages to eating organic pro-duce that is grown by local farms.

What people need to concern themselves

with is having a better knowledge of whatthey are ingesting because it could eventuallybe a life-or-death situation. There are toomany diseases that can be recognized fromingesting non-organic produce for everyonenot to stand up and take notice.

In order to protect from the possible dan-gerous effects of hormones, steroids and pes-ticides, it is important that everyone staysinformed about what their local farmer isusing to grow their crops.

The situation becomes difficult when youtalk about getting the vitamins and nutrientsthat your body needs by not eating fruits andvegetables regularly.

If you can, try to find a local farm in yourarea that grows everything organically, so youcan recognize the health benefits of organicfood while not concerning yourself withharmful carcinogens.

CONSIDER ORGANIC

Organic produce allows consumers to enjoyall of the natural vitamins, minerals, andother natural benefits that pesticide-freefarming can bring about.

A recent consumer survey completed bystudents and researchers at Cornell Universityfound that "organically grown apples wereless tart at harvest and sweeter after sixmonths of storage than conventional apples."This fact only accentuates the fact that therecan be benefits to taste as well as health whenyou buy organically grown produce.

Another startling fact to note is what dis-eases you could prevent yourself from gettingif you were to eat only organic foods. A bat-tery of tests by the U.S. Department ofAgriculture has found that pesticides have ledto cancer, obesity, birth defects, andAlzheimer's Disease. When you consider theamount of produce that is eaten in one year, chances are that most Americans have alreadyingested trace amounts of dangerous pesti-cides.

What do we know definitively about theadvantages of a diet rich in organic produce? The University of California-Davis recentlyfound that organic tomatoes that are grown infields without the use of chemical fertilizershave "excessive formation of antioxidantssuch as quercetin (79% higher) and kaempfer-ol (97% higher)" than tomatoes grown usingchemicals and insecticides.

TRIED EVERYTHING TO LOSE WEIGHT? PROFESSIONAL HELP COULD BE THE ANSWER

With all of these images bombarding us on adaily basis, it can be extremely difficult to knowwhat are safe and effective ways to lose weight.Once you’ve tried different diets and exerciseswithout getting good long-term results, it can beincredibly frustrating.

That’s when professional help is most needed.A professional weight loss expert can step in

and help you realize what in your lifestyle needschanging. This is where the problem becomesextremely difficult.

When you talk about changing someone's dailyschedule or routine, it becomes a very tenuoussituation that usually ends in the original behav-

ior being reverted to with the correct weight losstechniques being pushed aside.

Only a professional can set you up with a pro-gram that is tailored directly to you and your per-sonal dietary needs. They can take your personalschedule into account as well as your nutritionalnecessities when they put together a plan ofaction to help you lose weight.

SERIOUS MEASURESWhat is the right kind of treatment for you?

The Lehigh Valley Health Network lists the follow-ing procedures to help determine what is the bestcourse of action for you to take to maximize yourweight loss: "metabolic rate testing, body composi-tion measurement, fitness assessment, individual-ized exercise program, nutrition planning, individualand/or group behavior sessions, and long-termweight management and relapse prevention pro-grams." All of these tools are available by seeking theprofessional advice of a weight loss manager.

WHAT TOLOOK FOR

When evaluating what plan works the best for you, always take into account the cost of the program, whether it is safe for you, and what your expectationswill be when starting the program.

The cost of professional help is usually the stickingpoint for many people because they not only need topay for professional assistance, but they also need todedicate money to the cost of food. However, theassistance that you receive cannot have a monetaryvalue placed on it because it is ultimately the mostvaluable resource that you can have at your disposal.

Safety of the program and your individual expecta-tions are also important. The end result that youbelieve would be optimum can be sometimes be far-

fetched, so you don't want to get your hopes toohigh only to be let down when you realize thatyou expected too much from the program.

Professionals can only do so much, asit is mainly up to the patient them-selves to make the necessarychanges in their personal life sothey can recognize a greateramount of lost weight.

People should also be awareof how physically preparedthey are for the program theyare entering. Always consultwith your doctor beforebeginning any type of weightloss program, as you may notbe in an optimum conditionto have all of your problemssolved.

Professional weight lossprograms, whether theyinvolve surgical procedures ornot, are great ways to help youget back to a healthy way ofliving. Make sure that youunderstand exactly what isexpected of you so that yourresults can be fully recog-nized.
