With childhood obesity epidemics on therise, many parents and healthcare providers areconcerned about the dietary habits of children. However, many parents to toddlers or evenschool-aged children may wonder if their chil-dren are eating enough.
Children often go through periods offinicky eating or disinterest in food. It is notuncommon to have a child who eats a widevariety of foods when he is younger only todislike the same foods a year or two later. Most doctors say that if a child is growing andactive, chances are that he is healthy and get-ting enough food. If the opposite is true, theremay be some cause for concern. Parentsshould consult the child's pediatrician if eatinghabits seem to be compromising their child'sgrowth or energy levels.
There are estimates that a young childshould eat about a tablespoon of food for eachyear of the child's age. Therefore, a 3-year-oldshould be getting at least 3 tablespoons offood. If the child is interested in more food, certainly offer it. If he pushes food away aftereating, don't force more on him. Most chil-dren should have 3 meals and 2 snacks perday. Toddlers may not eat enough in one meal
to remain full until the next meal. Small, healthy snacks of vegetables, whole-graincrackers or low-fat dairy products can helptake the edge off of hunger.
Health experts say that it can take severalintroductions to a new food before the childbecomes accustomed to its taste and texture. Itmay be a good idea to offer a variety of newfoods together with something he alreadyenjoys eating.
It's also common for kids to only eat onetype of food over and over again. Don't worrythat the child is not getting enough nutrition.Chances are he will grow out of this stage andsoon enjoy a variety of foods.
Threats or punishments to eat will onlyserve to cause a poor relationship with food, advise childhood experts. Also, don't bribe achild to eat with the reward of a snack ordessert later on. This sets a poor example ofeating and could lead to behavioral problems.
Many children develop finicky eating habits. However, as long as a youngster is growingregularly and has plenty of energy for dailyactivities, there's a good chance that the foodsbeing eaten are not interfering with health.

As anyone who's ever attempted dietingknows, advice on weight loss comes fromevery corner. Friends might swear by thelatest dieting trend while family membersmay be just as adamantly convinced thetrend doesn't have merit.
So what's true and what's false? Simplyput, combining a healthy diet with regularexercise is the best way to lose weight andkeep that weight off. While most adults arefully aware of that fact, that doesn't stopthem from finding the latest fad and lettingit dictate their eating habits for days or evenweeks. For those about to diet, consider thefollowing good and bad diet fads.
The Good* Portion control: Many diets emphasize
the importance of portion control. Researchhas indicated it's not just what we eat thatcauses weight gain, but how much we'reeating as well. In a study in the AmericanJournal of Public Health, researchers foundthat cookies are 700 percent bigger than thesuggested USDA standards. And it's notjust cookies that are much bigger than rec-ommended, as our servings of pasta (480percent), muffins (333 percent) and bagels(195 percent) are much bigger than theyshould be. While not all diets that promoteportion control are necessarily healthy, por-tion control on its own is a healthy way foreveryone to approach their daily diet.
* Lifestyle change: Individuals who wantto lose weight should look for dietary tipsthat promote a change in lifestyle and notjust changes in diet. Look for diets thatdon't have a timeline, promoting fastweight loss in 'X' amount of weeks. A dietthat promotes a longterm commitment toeating healthy foods while also encouragingdaily exercise is one that's likely going to bemore successful and beneficial than one thatpromises significant weight loss in a shortperiod of time.
The Bad* One food can do it all: Nearly every
dieter has heard of a diet that promises youcan eat all you want of a specific food and
still lose weight so long as that's all you'reeating. However, focusing on a specific foodis certain to deprive dieters of nutrients theysorely need. Cutting out entire food groupsmeans dieters won't be enjoyed a balanceddiet. Also, dieters will begin to crave thefoods they're not getting, which could leadto bingeing.
Another side effect to one-food diets isthat certain foods can cause some unenjoy-able side effects, including dehydration orgastrointestinal problems. Look for balancein a diet, which should eliminate one-fooddiets from consideration.
* Misguided vegetarianism: While vege-tarianism isn't bad, dieters often apply itincorrectly. When applied correctly, a vege-tarian diet has been linked to all sorts ofbenefits, including lower rates of obesityand heart disease. However, dieters oftenmistakenly eat a vegetarian diet with a foun-dation of cheese and pasta, which can actu-ally cause weight gain. Carbohydrate-richfoods, while they might be vegetarian, willlikely result in weight added as opposed tolost. When adopting a vegetarian diet, besure to include whole grains and fruit andeat foods like nuts, beans or even tofu toensure you're getting enough protein.
* Bye-bye, carbohydrates: Arguably nodiet is more popular than the one that advo-cates eliminating carbohydrates. This isproblematic, especially for those who wantto combine their healthy diet with exercise.Carbohydrates are ideal foods for boostingenergy, which dieters will need if they wantto exercise regularly. Whole-grain breads, oatmeal and brown rice are all beneficialcarbohydrate sources. For those desiring toeliminate some forms of carbs from theirdiets, eliminate white bread and white rice,as those are low in nutrients.
When it comes to dieting, there are cer-tainly plenty of options touting incredibleweight loss in short periods of time. Butdieters should always look for healthy waysto lose weight and keep it off, which oftenincludes some combination of a well-bal-anced diet that promotes moderation.

When a person decides to make a com-mitment to a healthier lifestyle, that deci-sion is often accompanied by the decisionto join a gym. Gyms can vary greatly. Some cater to specific activities, such askick boxing or martial arts, while othersare more general in scope, with weighttraining and cardiovascular equipment andaccess to personal trainers.
Regardless of which type of facility anindividual is hoping to join, certain exter-nal factors go a long way to dictatingwhether or not joining the gym will be asuccess. When looking for an exercise facil-ity, the following items should be takeninto consideration before signing an agree-ment.
* Location: Even the most ardent ofgym rats would say it helps a great deal tofind a gym that's conveniently located. Ifthe gym is too far away or getting thererequires sitting in heavy traffic, then menand women are much less likely to visit thegym as they would be to visit a gym that'sright down the street or easy to get to.
When looking for an exercise facility, find one that's either close to home orclose to the office (preferably both if youwork close to home). For those who workfar away from home, the gym's locationshould ideally be closer to home to pro-mote working out on weekends when youwon't be anywhere near the office.
* Fellow members: Certain gyms mightprove intimidating or uncomfortablebecause of their existing members. Whilethe members themselves might be warmand friendly, those new to working outmight be intimidated if everyone else inthe building looks like a professional body-builder. In addition, women sometimesfeel more comfortable working out at anall-female gym.
* Cost: The cost of gym membership isarguably the foremost consideration formany people when choosing a gym, espe-cially since the economy remains largelyunpredictable. When looking for an exer-cise facility, inquire about membershipcosts as well as any initiation fees you mayincur or discounts you may be eligible for.Because of the struggling economy, manygyms have waived or are open to waivingsign-up or initiation costs, which can cost
in the hundreds of dollars at some facilities. Also, when discussing cost with a facili-
ty employee, ask if there are family dis-counts or if memberships are reduced iffees are paid all at once instead of everymonth. For example, a gym might charge$600 annually ($50 per month), but give a10 percent discount to any members whopay a year's worth of dues at sign-up.When discussing membership costs, keepin mind many gyms are open to negotia-tion, but prospective members must initi-ate any such negotiations.
* Membership rights: Many gyms boastdifferent types of memberships. Somememberships are all-access and allowmembers to use the weight room, sauna, pool, etc. Other memberships might costless but not offer as much access. Forinstance, a basic membership might offeraccess to the weight room and cardiovascu-lar machines, but not to the pool or sauna.Choosing the right membership dependson the individual. For those who don'tswim and won't enjoy a post-workoutsteam, then the basic membership can savemoney while still meeting all of the desiredneeds. For those who want all-access, themore expensive membership might bemore up your alley. Whichever member-ship is the better fit, be sure the member-ship agreement lists your rights as a mem-ber before signing any paperwork.
* Hours of operation: Some people pre-fer to workout before going to work, whileothers want to sleep in and exercise after aday at the office. Individuals should find agym that fits their schedules and workoutpreferences. It's also good to inquire aboutholiday hours of operation. A good gymwon't shut down entirely during a holiday, and instead stay open on at least a limitedschedule.
* Equipment: Even those new to work-ing out should be able to tell if equipmentis up-to-date or outdated. A gym with out-dated equipment is best to avoid, as olderequipment could increase risk of injury. Agym with the latest equipment is a gymthat likely emphasizes giving its membersthe best possible environment in which toworkout, and that's important for all fit-ness enthusiasts, but especially those whoare just beginning.

Encouraging Good
Hygiene Habits
for Tweens
(MS) -- With school, sports, friends andhobbies, today's tweens lead busy and activelives, and sometimes they don't take thetime -- or know -- to practice good hygiene. While discussing proper hygiene with yourtween can be difficult, it is possible toaddress the topic without making him orher feel uncomfortable or self-conscious.One approach parents can take is to appealto your tweens' growing maturity by mak-ing it clear that these self-care tasks are theirresponsibility. Giving your tween therespect and encouragement to make theirown choices in these transitional years canhelp them develop healthy habits for life.
To help empower your tween to takebetter care of their hygiene, parents can fol-low these tips:
Make it Fun: The tween years are allabout finding a unique sense of style. Thisalso applies to cosmetics and accessories.Allow your tween to choose their sham-poos, soaps and oral care products. This willencourage them to take interest in theirhygiene without you having to ask.
Brace Face: Tooth brushing can be astruggle at this age. Your child may go in thebathroom for 30 seconds and declare thathe or she has brushed. Kids should knowthat good oral care is just as important astaking a shower, especially if your child hasbraces. Make the process a little easier andensure they are brushing for the properamount of time by keeping a two minutetimer in the bathroom. By supplying yourtween with products in the flavors (e.g. not-too-spicy, not-too-sweet) and cool designs
they will like, such as the Crest Pro-HealthFOR ME Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste, they might even forget they are doing some-thing healthy and those two minutes willfly!
"Oral health is an important issue par-ticularly for kids in their adolescent years.Tooth decay is still recognized as the mostcommon chronic disease affecting childrenin the United States. According to theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics, 51 mil-lion hours of school are lost each year due todental-related illness1," says Dr. JenniferSalzer, orthodontist, dentist and mother ofa tween. "Not only can poor oral hygieneaffect the health and well-being of a child, italso plays a role in self-esteem."
Under Armor: Puberty is the first timeadolescents have to deal with body odor.Help your tween understand how to controlodors by explaining the difference betweendeodorant, which controls bacteria whileadding fragrance, and antiperspirant, whichstops or limits sweating. Remind yourtween that both deodorant and antiperspi-rant will help if they put it on before theystart sweating, not after.
Skincare 101: Changing hormones typi-cally bring about oilier skin, especially onthe nose and forehead. Teach your tween towash their face once or twice a day with acleanser and discourage them from picking,as this causes inflammation and scarring.
Lead by Example: Whether they admitit or not, your tween notices your habits.Set an example by showing that a healthyhygiene routine is important to you too.

(MS) -- If you're 65 or older, the flu pre-vention message for you this year is simple:Get the flu shot as soon as you can. There'sno need for two shots like last year -- justone shot will help protect you for the 2010-11 flu season.
This year -- and every year -- health offi-cials urge you to get the seasonal flu vaccineas soon as it's available in your community.Older adults are at greater risk of seriousflu-related complications (like pneumonia),hospital stays and dying from the flu whencompared with young, healthy adults. Thisis because the body's ability to fight illnessdrops as you age. In fact, each year about 9out of 10 seasonal flu-related deaths andmore than 6 out of 10 seasonal flu-relatedhospital stays in the United States occur inpeople 65 years and older.
This year, there is only one vaccine forthe 2010-11 flu season. "This year's flu vac-cine will protect against the 2009H1N1virus that caused so much illness lastseason and two other influenza viruses,"said Dr. Anne Schuchat, Assistant SurgeonGeneral of the U.S. Public Health Serviceand CDC's Director of the National Centerfor Immunization and Respiratory Diseases."One of which is an H3N2 virus, whichusually hits older adults harder. And havingone flu vaccine will make it easier to get theprotection you need against flu all seasonlong."
Flu vaccine supplies are expected to beplentiful, but you should get the flu shot as
soon as it's available, as the timing ofinfluenza circulation is unpredictable andsometimes starts in the early Fall.
This year, you also have a choice indosage for the flu vaccine -- a regular vac-cine and a higher-dose option are availablefor people 65 years and older. The higher-dose vaccine may cause more mild sideeffects than the regular vaccine as it mayresult in a stronger immune response. Thesemild side effects may include pain and red-ness where the shot was given, headache, fever, and muscle aches. CDC has notshown a preference for either type of fluvaccine because both vaccines will provideprotection against flu this season. Talk toyour doctor about which vaccine is best foryou.
Getting a flu shot every year is your bestprotection against the flu and its complica-tions. Because flu viruses may change eachyear, even if you got the 2009 H1N1 flushot or the seasonal flu shot last year, youstill need this year's vaccine.
You can get a flu shot from your doctor, pharmacist, or local health clinic and at fluclinics in local retail outlets. CDC recom-mends that everyone 6 months and olderget the flu vaccine, including those 65 yearsof age and older.
For more information about the dangersof flu and the benefits of the flu vaccine, talk to your doctor or nurse, visithttp://www.cdc.gov, or call CDC at 1 800CDC INFO (800 232 4636).

According to a report from theAmerican Heart Association StatisticsCommittee and Stroke StatisticsCommittee, heart disease figured to costthe United States in excess of $315 billionin 2010 alone. While there's no singlecause of heart disease, a person's lifestylecan greatly reduce or increase his or herrisk for heart disease.
One of the best ways a man or womancan reduce the risk for heart disease is towatch what he or she eats. A poor diet cancause obesity and high cholesterol andincrease a person's risk for diabetes. In a2008 report, the National Center forHealth Statistics noted that 33.9 percent ofadults in the United States could qualify asoverweight or obese in 2005-06. In addi-tion, high blood pressure affected 30.5 per-cent of adults during that same time peri-od. Being overweight or obese and havinghigh blood pressure are risk factors forheart disease, and all can be controlled byadults who commit to changing their diets.
Though there are risk factors for theseconditions besides poor diet, maintaining ahealthy diet is a big step for adults lookingto reduce their risk of heart disease as wellas a host of other ailments. When added toa diet, the following foods can help health-conscious men and women live healthierlives.
* Almonds: Almonds can help men andwomen control their weight and improvetheir heart health. What's more, almonds, which are a good source of protein, fiberand vitamin E, might help reduce a per-son's risk of Alzheimer's disease.
* Coffee: The medical community hasvarying opinions on coffee, but when con-sumed in moderate doses, coffee mighthelp reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and,for men, Parkinson's disease. Coffee mightalso help improve memory and mood, butadults should consult with their physicianfor advice as to the medical benefits of cof-fee.
* Grapes: Grapes are a great source of vita-min C and potassium. Grapes also providea good dose of quercetin, which could helpmen and women strengthen their immunesystems.
* Ginger: Men and women with arthritismight want to consider adding more gin-ger to their diets. Ginger has been linkedto reducing arthritis pain, and can alsohelp calm an upset stomach and quell nau-sea.
* Kale: Kale is often mistaken for spinach. While spinach is healthy, too, kale isamong the many green vegetables thatpack a powerful and nutritious punch.Kale is a strong source of vitamin A, vita-min C, potassium, and lutein. In addition, kale is a good source of zeaxathan, whichcan help reduce the incidence of certaincancers and help maintain eyesight.
* Pecans: Like almonds, pecans are a goodsource of vitamin E, particularly a type ofvitamin E known as gamma tocopherol.Pecans are also full of antioxidants, whichcan strengthen the body's immune system.
* Sweet potatoes: Some might scoff at thenotion that a food with the word "sweet"in its name can actually be healthy. However, sweet potatoes are a great sourceof vitamin A and vitamin C, and they'realso high in fiber. Sweet potatoes are also agreat source of lycopene, which may helpfight heart disease and even certain can-cers.
When it comes to getting healthy, menand women can look to several foods thatmay reduce their risks for a host of ail-ments, including heart disease, the leadingcause of death for both men and women. But adults should consult with their physi-cian before making any changes to theirdaily diets.

There are many people who associate thearrival of spring with a renewed sense of ener-gy that borders on the frantic. But such springfever is actually quite the opposite ... at least inthe beginning.Spring fever is a term used to classify a moodchange characterized by low energy, fatigueand apathy early in the spring season. Similarto seasonal affective disorder (SAD), springfever is a mental condition brought on by thechange in seasons. It is common in peoplewho also suffer from SAD.Eventually, spring fever mayevolve into feelings of restless-ness, intense nervous excite-ment, high-energy spurts andloss of appetite. The condition is a chemicalresponse in the body to its car-cadian rhythm spurred on bysunlight. In the winter, thereare fewer hours of sunlight. Sunlight has adirect effect on the production of serotoninand melatonin. Serotonin is the feel-goodchemical messenger that affects mood andother bodily functions. In the darker, colderseasons, serotonin can be in short supply, which is why many people feel blue thesetimes of the year. Melatonin is the chemicalcomponent that is related to sleep and wake-fullness. When there are more hours of dark-
ness, the body produces more melatonin, which in turn makes a person tired. When the spring season arrives, the body cantake a while to readjust to the correct levels. Therefore, a person may initially have residualmelatonin and a short supply of serotonin inthe early spring, accounting for the tirednessand irritability. As the chemical messengersdecrease and increase according to sunlight, the reverse takes effect. Aperson may haveextra energy and actually feel little need to
sleep. There is also some biologicalevidence that the seasonalchange may affect human con-ception. Studies show that latewinter and spring babies arecommonplace, meaning that anumber of conceptions takeplace during the warm-weathermonths.
As the body readjusts hormonally to thechanges in seasons, there could be a fluctua-tion of moods until the full feelings of vitalityknown during the spring season set in.While spring often evokes feelings of elationand rejuvenation in adults and children alike,it is important to recognize that suicide ratesalso increase with the change in seasons, per-haps as a result hormonal imbalances in thebody.

3 Tips to Maximize Your Abdominal Exercises• Don’t rush. Be very slow and smooth with the ab exercises. Ideally, try to take 2-4 counts to come up and 2-4counts to come down.
• Concentrate, concentrate, and concentrate on thoseabdominal muscles. Visualize in your mind the contractionand working your muscles as you perform an exercise.
• Before you begin, think about pulling your belly button intoward your spine. Now keep it in that position throughoutthe entire move. You may need to remind yourself periodically to keep this position.
