A registered dental hygienist is a preventive oral health professional who provides educational, clinical, research, administrative, and therapeutic services supporting total well-being through the promotion of optimal oral health. Dentists are responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, management and overall coordination of all dental services related to an individual’s oral health. Physician assistants are professionals who work as part of a team to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. PAs perform physical examinations, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret lab tests, perform procedures, assist in surgery, provide patient education and counseling, and make rounds in hospitals and nursing homes. All 50 states allow PAs to practice medicine and prescribe medications as well. PAs work in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient settings. PAs train to provide primary care, but can work in specialty care as well. Family medicine physicians focus on the health care of individuals or families. Doctors specializing in internal medicine care for patients in offices and hospitals. They manage common sicknesses and complex illnesses of adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Pediatricians are concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. LPNs or LVNs provide basic nursing care under the direction of registered nurses and doctors. They may check blood pressure, change bandages, help patients bathe and dress, and maintain patient records. RNs record patients' medical histories and symptoms, give patients medicines and treatments, set up plans for patients’ care or contribute to existing plans, and observe patients and record the observations. They also operate and monitor medical equipment, help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, teach patients and their families how to manage their illnesses or injuries, and explain what to do at home after treatment. APRN is an umbrella term for four different types of masters prepared (or doctorally-prepared) nurses. APRNs work in collaboration with a physician or independently. Nurse practitioners provide health care to individuals or families in a variety of places – clinic, hospital school, etc. Nurse midwives provide health care to women during and after a pregnancy. They also deliver babies and care for babies right after delivery. Social workers provide health related services in numerous settings; hospice and palliative care, schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, medical centers, private practice, government agencies, mental health clinics, outpatient healthcare settings, psychiatric hospitals and social service agencies. The scope of practice varies from case management and discharge planning, clinical practice to macro practice, which informs and shapes policies, communities, programming and leadership.

Social workers with a doctoral degree become leaders in the healthcare field. They assume leadership roles in agencies that provide health care and related services and through research and education impact health care. They may study how healthcare disparities affect a population. At colleges and universities, faculty develop curricula and recruit and influence future social workers to provide services in the health care arena.

A high school diploma or equivalent, a certificate (program of up to one year of study beyond high school), an Associate degree (two years of study beyond high school) or on-the-job training.

Associates degree from an accredited dental hygiene program. Must pass written and clinical examinations.

Doctoral or professional degree from an accredited dental school. Must pass written and practical examinations and have a license.

Master's degree. All states require completion of an accredited PA program and passing a national certification exam for state licensure.

Doctoral or professional degree from an accredited school or college of medicine. Must complete three years of residency (on-the-job training for doctors), pass exams, and obtain a license to practice.
