A Psychedelic Summer presents artworks that explore color, pattern, and new technology during a time when contemporary art as we know it was in its infancy. Throughout the summer, the McNay highlights this collection of works by Edna Andrade, Robert Gordy, and Joe Tilson in the Frost Octagon, in conjunction with Nam June Paik and John Godfrey’s seminal 1973 video, Global Groove. Paik described the work as being “a glimpse of the video landscape of tomorrow, when you will be able to switch to any TV station on the earth, and TV Guide will be as fat as the Manhattan telephone book.” Known as one of the first major works of video art, Global Groove is an enduring example of excellence and innovation in a genre that has now been explored by artists for over half a century. General admission is free; however, exhibit pricing is $10. The bus will depart at 3:45 PM and will return at 6 PM. Please be sure to sign up with Veronica or the Front Desk for a transportation reservation. Remember… to avoid a transportation charge you must cancel with a 48-hour notice.

Thursday, August 17th | 9 AM Tucked away on the near-Southside, just across South Hackberry from the illustrious Little Red Barn, a specialty foods store opened its doors some three months ago: San Antonio’s Gourmet Olive Oils. Owner Christine Arredondo retired from the Marine Corps a year and a half ago after a 15-year career that took her on two tours in Iraq. After returning to her hometown of San Antonio, she set out to educate her community about the benefits of cooking with high-quality ingredients. SA’s Gourmet is a tasting room, with rows upon rows of empty bottles waiting to be filled with sweet and savory oils and vinegars; placards with descriptions and recommended preparations below every bottle; and tiny cups for sampling the goods. Arredondo sells 50 varieties of oil, including EVOOs and oils infused with ingredients like cilantro, blood orange, Persian lime and black and white truffles. San Antonio’s Gourmet also offers Italian balsamic vinegars aged between 12 and 18 years and other specialty items like a fragrant black truffle sea salt. All products are sourced from small estate mills across the globe, and the liquids are sold in 200-, 375-, and 750-milliliter bottles that cost between $9.95 and $25 on average. Residents will get the chance to tour and experience this unique little shop. The bus will depart at 9 AM. Please be sure to sign up with Veronica or the Front desk for a transportation reservation. Remember…to avoid a transportation charge you must cancel with a 48-hour advance notice.
Day Trip: Historic Gruene Saturday, August 19th | 9 AM
Gruene, Texas, is an area with a colorful history that’s perfect for a day trip. Founded in the 1840’s, Gruene was once a booming transportation and commerce center. However, the boll weevil disaster and Great Depression hit the town hard, and Gruene was basically a ghost town by 1950. With the help of friends, many of Gruene’s most important buildings were restored and designated as historic landmarks. Today, Gruene Historic District is a lovely town with an old-time feel that’s easy to appreciate. Browse the many shops on Main Street and you’ll find antiques, gifts and more. This weekend Gruene is hosting Market Days, so you will enjoy artisans and crafts from various vendors. Visit Gruene Hall, the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas. Big Gus & The Swampadelics are scheduled to provide a free performorance. When it’s time to eat, go to the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar near Gruene Hall. This is very popular spot especially in the summer. You can expect very heavy crowds, longer waits than usual, uneven grounds and tons of walking. Please wear light and airy clothing, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and don’t forget to drink plenty of water. The bus will depart at 9:00 AM from The Towers and will pick up at 1:00 PM at the exact drop off location. Sign up with Veronica or the Front Desk for a transportation reservation. Remember…to avoid a transportation charge you must cancel with a 48-hour advance notice.
Residents will have an opportunity to visit the San Antonio Museum of Art for a public galley talk followed by a guided tour. There is no admission charge; however special exhibit pricing is $5. The special exhibit features approximately 70 works including paintings, sculpture, and decorative objects the exhibition contrasts the visions of heaven and hell, ideas that are central to Pure Land Buddhism. Be sure to sign up with Veronica or the Front Desk for a transportation reservation. The bus will depart at 3:45 PM. Remember...to avoid a transportation charge you must cancel with a 48-hour advance notice.
