• 1 Peter 2:18-25—18 Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable. 19 For this finds favor, if for the sake of conscience toward God a person bears up under sorrows when suffering unjustly.

• 20 For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God. 21 For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,

• There are a lot of modern-day situations that can find application in Peter’s command for servants to submit to their masters.

• One of the key aspects of Peter’s command is that our submission isn’t based upon the goodness or fairness of the one who has authority over us.

• 1 Peter 2:18—Servants, be submissive to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but also to those who are unreasonable.

• Our willing submission communicates to others that, as believers, there’s something fundamentally different about us.

• 1 Peter 2:7-8 tells us that unbelievers will take offense to Jesus and the message that salvation comes only through Him.

• 1 Peter 3:15—but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

• We are to approach unbelievers with gentleness, reverence, love, and grace.

• Look for opportunities to tell others that you are a sinner in need of a Savior and that, by the grace of God, you are trying to live your life out in a way that reflects your relationship with Him.

• The faithful submission to all authorities in our lives will eventually cause others to notice that there’s something different about us.

• Jesus suffered for us and He also left us an example of how to approach the suffering we face.

• 2 Corinthians 5:21—He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

• Jesus’ suffering was entirely undeserved.

• We deserved to receive the punishment He received.

• Jesus willingly took our place and paid our penalty on the cross.

• Jesus has clearly demonstrated how we should handle any unjust suffering that we may experience.

• But, we also need to remember that He only suffered because of our sin.

• Isaiah 53:5-6—5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

• Jesus was sinless and morally perfect.

• He also atoned for our sin.

• By the same work, Jesus both died for our sins and also set an example for us to follow.

• There are so many times where tremendous damage is done because we insist on demanding our rights.

• Jesus was willing to be wronged, instead of demanding His rights.

• 1 Peter 2:13 starts out by saying, “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution.”

• Jesus paid the price for your sin and also for the sin of the one who wronged you.

• 1 Peter 2:24—…for by His wounds you were healed.

• The context is talking about the spiritual healing that is found through the death of Christ.

• 1 Peter 2:24—and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.

• The healing that we receive through the cross is spiritual.

• We are healed in the sense that we will not be the one who is “crushed for our iniquities.”

• The central message of the gospel is deliverance from sin, not sickness.

• God can heal us physically, if He chooses to do so.

• However, He doesn’t always do that.

• If physical healing is freely available through the death of Jesus, what do we say to those who suffer through physical ailments?

• Psalm 115:3—But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.

• In one sense, Jesus did overcome physical maladies on the cross, because they are ultimately the result of sin and the fall.

• However, if the full healing effects were realized now, no believer would ever be sick or die.

• Revelation 21:3-4—3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4 and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

• Without Christ in our lives we are all like sheep without a shepherd.

• But, when we come to Jesus, He becomes our provider, our protector, and our leader.

• Matthew 6:31-33—31 “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
