The varsity Mustangs were at Franklin Dec. 17 taking on the Lions in non- district competition. Franklin put Madis- onville’s victorious run in jeopardy early on after taking a 19-11 lead in the first quarter. The Mus- tangs bounced back, though, and led 36-32 at halftime. For most of the second half, the Lions kept within two possessions of the Mustangs’ score. Howev- er, Madisonville held for a 66-59 win. Marcus Tyler dominat- ed the scoreboard with 35 points, accompanied by five rebounds and four steals. C.J. Dottin scored eight points and had matching stats of three re- bounds, three steals and three assists. Grant Smith mirrored seven points with seven rebounds and nabbed two steals. Brent McCloud came away with five points, five rebounds, five steals and seven as- sists. Ladarius Merchant had four points, three steals and five rebounds. Charkeith Wiley’s night in- cluded three points, nine rebounds, one steal and two assists. James Holiday and Dex Shiver each had two points and three re- bounds, and Holiday added an assist. Jaylen Manley grabbed one re- bound, two steals and two assists. Davodrick Ross contributed two steals and an assist. The team was 7- of-8 in free throws in the fourth quarter. “There’s something special about these kids,” said Brian Thurmond, Madisonville head boys basketball coach, earlier this month. “If they can pass and do what they need to do, this can be one of the better teams that I’ve ever coached and Madisonville has ever seen. They handle adversi- ty real well. I’m really proud of them.” Madisonville scheduled one more game before the winter break and traveled to Milano Dec. 21. The Mustangs won’t have very long to rest as they’ll be at the Lovelady tournament Dec. 27-29. Madisonville has a first-round game scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday versus Kennard. Bulldogs fall to Dime Box Lady Bulldogs enrich record at Dime Box VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL by Fernando Castro Editor A rematch from a girls basketball tournament earlier this season provid- ed North Zulch’s varsity girls with another district win. The Lady Bulldogs were at Dime Box Dec. 18 for a District 27-A match- up against the Lady Horns. The two district foes had faced off already on Dec. 1 in Dime Box’s tournament when North Zulch won, 28-20. In last Tuesday’s second engagement between the two teams, the game was close in the first quarter. Dime Box had a one-point edge after eight minutes, 8-7. However, the Lady Bulldogs ratcheted up the score in the second quar- ter and led 25-15 at the break. Each team scored about evenly in the second half. In the end, though, North Zulch added a few more points to its advan- tage and won with the final score of 39-26. Sam Tobias led with 16 points. Erin Diserens scored 11 points. Avery Billings entered double digits with 10 points. Absent from the court has been leading scorer Brittney Wiese. Wiese is out of action at the mo- ment due to an injury suf- fered earlier this month. Ron Howard, North Zulch’s head girls basket- ball, has commended his team for stepping up and compensating for the loss in recent weeks, including his seniors Tobias and Billings. “Both seniors stepped up in the absence of Brit- tney,” Howard said of their game against Ri- chards two weeks ago. “Erin Diserens and Am- ber Filoteo both played great defense.” Howard added this week that Wiese will hope- fully be cleared to play by the first Tuesday game af- ter the winter break, which will be Jan. 8 at Calvert.
