Our students (and parents) never fail to surprise us when is comes to supporting charitable events. Children in Need was a roaring success at Ilkley Grammar School with superhero fancy dress, Year 7 Pudsey Challenge, Year 8 three legged walk and a staff vs. Post 16 netball match! Children in Need is such a fantastic cause and a charity that all our students can relate to. All in all we have raised a tremendous £1582.38 so far...with Year 7 Pudsey Challenge and Year 8 Three Legged Walk money still to be counted!

Pudsey Challenge Tutor groups in Year 7 were asked to collect small change at home over a period of time. They brought this in to school on Friday to decorate a giant outline of Pudsey bear that each class had created. Super Tutor Group points were also awarded.

Post 16 vs. Staff Netball Match It was a nail biting match—full of speed and skill but it seems the staff side were able to use their super powers to win over the Post 16 student opposition with the match finishing 12-8 in their favour!

Review Day: Friday 28th November 2014 As you will know from the school calendar and Student Planner, Friday 28th November has been allocated for our annual Review Day. This is a day when the normal school timetable is suspended and all students from Years 7 – 13 meet with their tutors to consider their progress and set targets and action points for the future. The process itself is very important and the day provides time and emphasis which we believe outweighs any loss of school time. School buses will not be available and students are required to make their own travel arrangements in time for their appointment.

All students must attend their appointment, unless they are ill and not fit for school. They must also attend in school uniform at a time allocated by their tutors and the process will take approximately half an hour. Each year group will receive specific instructions from their Year Leader about producing a presentation for their tutor. Last year, many parents viewed the presentation ahead of Review Day so as to assist their children with their learning, and we would encourage you to please do this again this year. We would be grateful if you could then sign their planner once you have seen the final presentation.

Each student will receive a progress tracking report to help the process and provide parents with feedback from the first term of this academic year.

Students are expected to undertake independent learning during the rest of the day. Examples of independent learning are available here on the school website, by Curriculum area and also on Realsmart by Key Stage. If you have any further questions please contact the Key Stage Hubs.

Uniform Focus—Hoodies Following on from our previous uniform focus on shirts we are now concentrating on hoodies. As the weather has turned colder more of our students are wrapping up which includes wearing coats and hoodies. There is only one correct way to wear a hoody to school...as a coat and not under their blazer. As with a coat, students should remove their hoody as they enter school. Students can expect to be challenged if they fall short of our high expectations. The ‘Get Smart’ message benefits us all. They can expect to receive a uniform comment if they are wearing their hoody incorrectly - it is very easy to avoid the challenge!

GCSE Coursework from 2014 Art Coursework GCSE Art coursework from last year can only be collected by arranging a suitable date and time with the Art Department. This can be done by emailing [email protected].

DT Coursework All GCSE Resistant Materials and Electronic Products coursework is now available for collection. Students should arrange collection with their teacher from last year. The deadline for collection is Friday 5th December. From this date onwards we will recycle and discard the practical work to create space for current projects.

Staffing Update Our warm congratulations go to our Deputy Head, Adam Daly who has been successful in his application for the permanent role of Headteacher at Pudsey Crawshaw School. Adam had taken on the role of Interim Headteacher at Pudsey Crawshaw School from June 1st after the Red Kite Alliance took over the school which is currently in special measures. Adam will be missed but we wish him all the best in his new role.

We are also pleased to announce we have recruited two new members of staff into our 2 new Lead Practitioner roles. We are delighted that Lisa Capstick from Minsthorpe Community College and Jamie Gutch from Harrogate Grammar School have been appointed as Lead Practitioners and they will join us in January 2015.

Year 11 and 12: Challenge and Celebration Week Payment for the Humanities Week, part of Challenge and Celebration week, is due on 21st November. All payments should be made via Parentpay.

Calling all Dancers! You are invited to attend a contemporary dance workshop run by Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). The workshop is free of charge and will take place in school on Monday 8th December 2014 3-5pm (in the Gym). NSCD are a Centre for Advance Training in Dance and run the Yorkshire Young Dancers (YYD) scheme. The workshop at Ilkley Grammar School offers an opportunity for students to experience contemporary dance and to consider if the YYD scheme would be suitable for them. A dance artist from NSCD will deliver a 2 hour workshop based on contemporary technique and choreography. This workshop also acts as a preliminary audition onto the YYD scheme. The deadline to confirm a workshop place is 27 th

November.

Well done to our Year 7 rugby team who played Hipperholme and Lightcliffe School on Monday night. The final score was IGS 34–15 Hipperholme and Lightcliffe.

Congratulations to Emma Powell (9JP) who competed on Saturday 8th November in Glasgow for another round of the British tooling series. Emma, competing again in the seniors category, got through to the finals in 3rd place and finished in 2nd place . The competition had a lot of long reaches but she powered through in the final Emma secured the same points as 1st place Anna Wells, so it came down to time. Emma’s next competition is the Rope Race in Manchester, good luck!

Good luck to Jamie Kidd (8PB) who will represent England in the Taekwondo team this weekend at the Commonwealth Games Championships in Edinburgh. Jamie has been involved in the sport since he was 3 years old and is in the Great Britain National Cadet Team and fights all over the world. Jamie is feeling very proud to represent his country along side his GB team mates who are Olympic athletes. All the best Jamie!

Well done to our footballers who have taken part in the Year 10 Inter Tutor Group 5-a-side Football Competition over the last few weeks. The finals were played out on Friday and 10JI came out as victorious winners securing 3 Super Tutor Group points. Around £60 was raised for various charities in the process.

Throw, Duck and Dodge! This week saw the start of our Community Dodgeball Competition, where community teams of girls and boys are pitched against each other in year groups for the ultimate prize of Dodgeball Champions...and Learning Community points! Well done to Year 7 who took part in their Tournament this week. The Year 7 winners were: 7LNR—S Band! The next 2 weeks will see Year 8 and 9 competing in their fiercely fought dodgeball battles. Congratulations to our Cross Country team who competed in the second round of the English Schools’ Cross Country Cup competition on Saturday. The event was hosted by Mount St Mary's College, Sheffield, and our runners did extremely well in horrendous conditions. All three teams - Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Inter Boys finished 3rd overall in their age categories which has qualified them for the National Final in Newquay, Cornwall on Saturday 29th November! We wish them luck for the long journey down south and hope for better weather than Saturday. Ghostly Goings On Well done to our Year 8 writers who took part in the Gothic Writing Competition. The year group have been studying gothic writing this term and tried their hand at their own eerie offerings. Following our author visit last week, Alan Gibbons was asked to judge the stories and deemed four entries to be spectacularly scary.

Congratulations to Eleanor Hunt (7LNR), Harry Hunt (10AHF) and Ethan Whiteside (8PDH) who took part in the Ilkley Cycling Club cyclo-cross event. The cycling club hosted their third annual cyclo-cross event last Sunday based at Olicana Cricket Club. The course was based around the cricket club and the back of Ilkley Lido, the youths’ race also went up into Middleton woods. Cyclo-cross is off road riding but on a modified road bike with knobbly tyres. This event was open to beginners so mountain bikes were also allowed. The event involved riding, carrying and running with bikes over varying terrain and mud. Over 250 people took part across the races, which ranged from under 8s through to the over 50s and a novices’ ride for those new to the sport. Eleanor rode in the U12s race (not her favourite type of racing) and finished 5th amongst a very strong field of riders. Harry rode in the Youth race (U16s). He got off to a great start and was at the front with the leaders, but when lifting his bike over a log his chain came off; after refitting the chain he powered his way back through the field and finished a well earned 6th. Ethan also competed in the U16 youth race a finished strongly in 10th place.

Congratulations to our Year 9 basketball team who were in action last Thursday at Titus Salts School. Career of the Week: Zoologist The Work: Zoologists work in a wide range of areas including: Developing and testing new drugs.

Improving agricultural crops and livestock.

Disease and pest control. Conserving endangered habitats and species.

Animal welfare and education. Developing policies and enforcing regulations for government agencies.

They specialise in one of a number of areas: Ecology (animal environments). Herpetology (reptiles).

Entomology (insects).

Parasitology (parasites). Paleozoology (fossil remains).

Your tasks would include: Carrying out field and laboratory research.

Studying animals in their natural environment or in captivity. Identifying, recording or monitoring animal species.

Producing detailed technical reports.

Giving presentations and publishing information in journals.

Supervising technicians.

Entry Requirements: Good GCSEs are required and ‘A’ Levels are preferable including Biology. A degree in a subject such as Zoology, Animal Ecology, Animal Behaviour or Conservation is also usually required. Prior to doing your degree, experience in voluntary work in conservation or a related area would be helpful.

Training: You will need to develop your skills and knowledge throughout your career. Membership of professional organisations such as the Institute of Zoology (IOZ) and the Society of Biology offer opportunities for your continuing professional development.

Pay: A starting salary can be between £21K to £25K. Those in research posts can earn between £25K and £30K a year. These figures are intended as a guideline only.

Year 11 Craven College Taster Day We are organising a Taster Day at Craven College on Wednesday 3rd December. We will leave school prompt at 8.30am and return for 3pm for school buses. Students will not be required to wear uniform to the Taster Day. All the subject areas on the right will be covered.

Please sign up for 2 sessions; it is better to try a course to find out if it’s a realistic option for you next year. You can apply for more than 1 course at a college. Courses at college are very different from school and you will need a post 16 pathway and a back-up plan. 1:1 Conference We were thrilled to be involved with the eLearning Foundation’s 1:1 Conference on Wednesday 12th November. Guest speakers included Abdul Chohan, Director of Essa Academy, David Kirtalan Managing Director of Elsium and the opening address was given by our own Headteacher, Helen Williams. Delegates came from all areas of education: Business Managers, Governors as well as teachers.

With the conference taking place at both the Craiglands Hotel and the school it was an exciting opportunity to share our experience of introducing 1:1 devices into IGS. Delegates were able to hear from our guest speakers and look at iPads in action in a school environment.

iOS8 Tip Here’s a little iOS 8 tip for quickly searching sites you’ve already visited in Safari: while in the address bar, start typing the first four or five letters of a website, add a space, and then type in a search term. You’ll find that the first result in the suggestion list (below the URL bar) will become an option to search that website, and tapping on that line will initiate the search.

The only catch is that you have to manually run a search on the website at least once (which is how Safari learns how the site formats search queries). This is a really useful feature for users, as it saves you from having to load a website before actually getting to initiate your search.

Post 16 London Art Gallery Visit Some of our Post 16 students visited the London Galleries recently, taking in the National Portrait Gallery, the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern and the works of Anslem Kiefer. The artworks they viewed ranged from the Tower of London Poppies to the more modern Turner Prize works on display at the Tate Modern. Mia Cooper (12PC), Paige Holdsworth (12NPG) and Alice Saunders (12PC) share their visit below.

The National Portrait Gallery ‘The second gallery we visited was The National Portrait Gallery, and I really liked this one as there was so much versatility in the work on display. In the first room I went in,I saw the digital portrait and a cast of a head in blood. This was possibly my favourite piece from the whole trip as it was just so fascinating. I loved the range of portraits all the way from the traditional portraits (1900s) to now and all the pieces were lovely, although my least favourite was the historical portraits. ’

Anslem Kiefer ‘The gallery displayed some of Kiefer’s main pieces of work from different periods in his life time and although there were many different styles, medias and techniques used, you could still see Kiefer through his work. There were many two dimensional pieces of work; sketches and graphic paintings. As you walked through the exhibition the work got bigger and bolder. Canvases weren’t just painted on but built up to appear more three dimensional using hay or plastic bags under the paint. The whole experience was very interesting, due to the scale Keifer worked in. His dark dim style showed how us each artist portrays themselves and their own personality through their work.’

Saatchi Gallery ‘On the Tuesday we visited the Saatchi Gallery which was my favourite of the four. The first room was slightly off putting as it was full of art sculpture made out of human skulls. However, upstairs there were some really beautiful pieces - included in the collection were speakers which had been transformed into bird houses, intricate cloud paintings and a small room filled with jars containing natural items that glowed under UV lights. There were also some strikingly pretty lace lanterns which I loved, until I discovered they were made from dead people’s clothes… ’

Tate Modern – Turner Prize ‘The Turner Prize was by far the strangest of all the exhibitions we saw in London. When we walked into the first room, it was, surprisingly, dark with a TV set up in the middle of the room. The images and series of videos played were very carefully filmed and some were very vulgar and weird, but it provoked thought, as you would expect from the Turner Prize. The next few exhibitions also displayed photography and film, but one used huge, colourful, bold prints which were easier to comprehend and more pleasing to look at. It was one of the most surreal experiences, but it did broaden our perspective on Art and what it means to be an artist and how broad the term ‘Art’ is.’

The aims of Anti-Bullying Week 2014 are to: Stop the bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs by equipping schools,

colleges and youth service leaders with resources to develop youth led anti-bullying initiatives and encourage inclusive attitudes amongst children and young people;

educate those who support and work with children to recognise children and young people who may be particularly vulnerable to bullying - encouraging an inclusive approach within all anti-bullying education; and

ensure the school and wider community understand that the use of any discriminatory language is wrong and will not be tolerated and that this includes challenging disablist language.

Top tips for young people: What can I do if I'm being bullied? Firstly you need to understand that it is not your fault. Believe that you deserve better and seek help. Talk to someone. Problems rarely get better by

keeping them inside. If you can, talk to an adult that you trust - like your parent or a teacher.

Talk to friends that you trust. Or, if you are scared of what might happen if you tell your parent or a friend, then contact Childline on 0800 1111.

Protect yourself - if you can, avoid situations where you are likely to be bullied. Never retaliate with violent actions such as hitting or punching - this can lead to you being seriously hurt or getting in trouble yourself. If the bullying is online, block or unfriend contacts that are being abusive. Make sure you have the highest privacy settings. If you are not sure how to do this then ask for help.

Take part in activities that help to raise your confidence and make you feel good about yourself. Some ideas could include Guides and Scouts, cadets, drama and dance classes, art classes, exercise classes and swimming. Remember that you deserve the very best in life.

If the bullying is making you feel very desperate and scared then don't take it out on yourself - get immediate help. You can contact Childline any time, day or night, for support and advice.

Exhibition of International Artists coming to North Yorkshire this December courtesy of IGS technician and Artist For fans of fantasy literature and the New-Zealand film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit a special event is coming to Ripon, North Yorkshire this December to tie into the release of the final Hobbit film The Battle of the Five Armies starring Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, Billy Connelly and Richard Armitage. Artist and IGS technician John Cockshaw will be co-ordinating and curating an exhibition of artwork inspired by the works of J.R.R Tolkien at the luxury Arts Cinema venue Curzon Ripon.

The work of acclaimed Canadian Artist Ted Nasmith (renowned illustrator of Tolkien’s stories and new illustrator of G.R.R Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’) will be exhibited alongside John’s own work and the artwork of Polish Graphic Artist Katarzyna Chmiel-Gugulska. The aim is an exhibition of diversity and thought-provoking interpretation of a single author’s work, and the work on show will be an exciting blend of painting, traditional drawing and photographic work. Leeds-based Archaeologist Shaun Richardson will be contributing some interesting thoughts on John’s own work that draw on Mediaeval aspects of landscape.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 13th December and continues until Saturday 31st January. Entry is free and the show opens daily according to Cinema screening times.
