Principal’s ReportLast week, we presented our Year 12 students with some of the most inspirational kiwi role models we could find, as part of a day encouraging long-term thinking about their plans, aspirations and career possibilities (see page 14).They were addressed by Ian Taylor, 2019 NZ Innovator of the Year, designer of America’s Cup graphics and many other similar successes since, and Marcus Akahuta-Brown, high profile youth leader, teacher and member of the Commonwealth Youth Caucus. A range of other speakers gave information aimed at informed career planning. The

messages were inspirational, informative, full of hope, and exhorted our students to develop positive, deliberate, outward looking plans for their lives. There is a wealth of expertise and personal support here at school to help our young people realise their dreams. They just have to reach out and use it. I have encouraged our Year 12’s to talk personally to a key person here at school, about any thoughts the day inspired in them.

Tēnā tātou. Our travelling group of 18 students returned this week after an intensely satisfying week in the capital city attending Te Matatini ki te Ao - The national Kapa Haka Festival. Thank you to Jacinta Gilbert and Greg and Debs Houkamau for their support along the way. A

most special thank you to Nic Nicholson for all of the hard work behind the scenes to get us to a most successful journey. Reminder: Kapa Haka is on Wednesdays after school in Gym 2 until 6.00pm (until 4.30pm for beginners).

From the BoardroomAlong with many other reviews the current government is carrying out, is a review of the way schools in New Zealand are governed and managed. The Board discussed a consultation document summarising the findings of this review and was represented at a recent public meeting. It would be fair to say that the recommendations are controversial, wide-reaching, and a mixture of both good and bad ideas. As a Board, we have significant concerns about the proposed direction to re-

centralise much of school management and governance into regional “hubs” (in addition to the existing Ministry of Education). It is clear that the proposed reforms are intended to tackle poorly performing areas of the schooling network. However, they should not be done by cobbling and neutering the ability of excellent schools (such as ours!) to do what we do very well.

PTA ReportHello to allI trust you all enjoyed the summer holidays and had a relaxing break.I have in this newsletter the meeting dates for the year. These will also appear in the newsletter and website throughout the year as reminders. At the Parent Information Evening at the Senior Campus on Wednesday night the PTA handed out an information sheet and listed the types of events which the PTA support during the year. Some of these are the beginning and end of year uniform sales, Open Day BBQ, Parent Teacher Interviews, the Year 13 Ball, to name just a few. The PTA also support the guest speaker information evenings held during the year. Previously these have been on Study Tips, Understanding NCEA nd various other topics. If you would like to help in some way but not be a committee member, the PTA would like

to collate a list of helpers for some of these events. That way if or when we need 2-3 people, we can give you a call, asking for an hour or two of your time. So keep an eye out for the list coming your way, as they say – “Many hands make light work”.The first meeting for the year is the AGM meeting on 19 March at 7.30pm in the Brigadier’s Room at the Senior Campus (upstairs in the foyer). We hope to see you there. You are all welcome to attend. It is a great source of information and we will have a report from Senior Management from both Senior and Junior Campus.

Congratulations to 2019 Presidents Lucy Cooper and Cole Robinson and Deputy Presidents Keita Ruwhiu and Kobe Rooney

In early February, twelve students from Year 13 embarked on an exciting trip to Melbourne to follow their passion for Science. Some of the things we got to experience were flying over Antarctica, visiting the Victoria Zoo, visiting the Aquarium and also the VSSEC (Victoria Space Science Education Centre). We even had a chance to visit the amazing RocketLab in Auckland, which was unique to our year. We also had the privilege to visit the Synchrotron, the largest particle accelerator in the Southern hemisphere. This trip not only enriched our knowledge and passion for Science, but we also developed strong friendships and expanded our cultural experiences and

independence as pairs of us had to serve as the tour guides for each day, getting us from one place to another. For all of us the highlight of the trip would undoubtedly have to have been the Antarctica flight, we were fortunate enough to have great weather allowing us to see many beautiful glaciers and landscapes. If you have a keen interest in Science and would like to find out more about next year’s trip, speak to Ms York at the Science office. To be eligible you need to be taking at least 1 of the Sciences in Year 12 and be interested in pursuing a Science-based career.

It may only be the start of Term One, but the JHC LEO Club is already back in full swing and we are very excited for the prospects of the year ahead! In

the school holidays we eagerly started planning our first fundraiser for Valentines Day, which was an immense success selling many delicious cupcakes, and over 200 balloons, for the Red Cross! We didn’t just stop there. We saw the Athletics Day BBQ as the perfect opportunity to work toward a worthy cause, and after hearing of the tragic story involving the beloved guest to our school ‘Marley the Cat’ we knew we had to help in some way, and managed to effectively sell all of our sausages and have a ball while doing so! We are so thrilled to continue our efforts throughout the rest of the year and cannot wait to start working with our 79 new members who are being warmly welcomed during the induction ceremony on Thursday March 7th!

The age of e-mail contact has had the effect of making teacher/parent and teacher/student communication much easier, and, as a result, much more frequent! Generally this has been very positive for all of us.Whilst staff accessibility is encouraged, we have recognised the need for some guidelines in order to allow staff to “switch off” after normal work hours. (Part of being a “Good Employer”).

Guidelines/Expectations• We recognise that parents

often send e-mails in evenings or weekends. (When they have time to attend to parenting issues!) However, staff are not expected to read or reply to e-mails after hours (ie during evenings, weekends or holidays).

• Staff response time will be variable according to their workload and teaching pressures. They are expected to acknowledge your email the next working day, and, where required, follow up with a more detailed response as soon as practicable (generally within two more days).

• Online accessibility of teachers by students follows the same guidelines, ie:• queries and questions may

not be read or answered “after hours”

• response times will vary• responses will be made as

soon as practicable

James Hargest fielded a mixed team in the Southland Interschool Softball tournament on Sunday 17th February. A good win over SGHS in the semi final led to a match up with SBHS in the final. Down 9 nil after 4 innings, Hargest fought back to score 8 unanswered

runs but unfortunately thats where the comeback ended going down 8-9. Well done to all involved, everyone contributed both in the field and with the bat over the course of the day.

PLEASE:• Do not double park, yellow line park, or park over the school entrance!• Avoid doing U-turns in the midst of the congested period on Layard Street. The sheer volume

of traffic makes these manoeuvres very dangerous, and we see many “near misses”. Three point turns are even more dangerous, especially for our students on bikes! Going around the block may well be quicker.

• Arrange your pickup at a less congested place. For example, the Lamond Street fenceline or gate (at the bottom of the field). No congestion there! All it needs is for your son or daughter to walk across the field.

• Arrange your pickup 10 minutes AFTER the heavily congested time. By 3.30 – 3.35pm, Layard Street is back to normal traffic flow, and is much safer.

• Traffic turning at the Ward Street/Layard Street crossroad creates significant bottlenecks. If you are a regular, think about how to avoid having to turn across the traffic at this corner.

• Do not drive into the grounds of either campus for pick-ups or drop-offs.• Think, could your child actually bike or walk to school?

Thanks for your co-operation. We are always trying to make improvements to the safety of our students, and these are some ways you could contribute to our efforts.

Omaui CampJunior Campus

Our Year 7 students have started their outdoor adventures at Omaui Camp, with the first classes having completed their camps over the last few weeks. It is always a great opportunity for our classes to bond and students to establish positive relationships outside of the school environment. It is important that all students come prepared with a packed lunch for the first day, a water bottle and snacks for the morning and lunch. Students can bring energy health food, such as scroggin, muesli bars, fruit, but NO lollies or chewing gum. If there are any children needing special food requirements please contact your child’s teacher and discuss this. It is

the parent’s responsibility to cater their alternative food requirements if this is appropriate. Please ring the office for a camp cost adjustment. The camp is $140 for students and $30 adults. If you have any issues with payment please contact Mrs Loader, accounts, or the Associate Principal, Ms Chilton-Smith before your child goes to camp. Partial payments and automatic payments are welcome. Payment of the $30 parent/caregiver cost is required before attending camp. We appreciate the support given by the whanau members who attend our camps, as your help is valuable in making the camps a positive experience for our classes.

We are soon to hold our Junior Campus Student Centred Conferences, a conference between the teacher, parent/guardians and the student. Your child will be the focus for the conference. They will be sharing their goals for the first half of the year with you. Information has been sent home regarding making bookings on line. The main conferences will be held on Tuesday 19 March and Thursday 21 March. Unless your class or Teacher is on camp, the alternative date will be listed when you make a booking.

We have a willow pattern dinner plate and a serving spoon which was left behind after a Pot Luck Dinner. Please come to the Senior Campus cafeteria to collect these items or sent your student to collect them.

2019 – My Best Year YetMany thanks to the speakers, sponsors and students who took part in this recent Year 12 Careers and Goal setting event which was held at the Ascot Park Hotel on Feb 21.The main themes for the day were, ‘preparing for an exciting future’ for which we were very fortunate to be joined by recent winner of NZ Innovator of the year, Ian Taylor from Animation Research Limited. Ian shared his life story and some of his achievements, which included winning a Sports Emmy for creating the graphics used in revolutionising coverage of America’s Cup yacht racing and Golf to name just a couple. His message was that the world is changing rapidly and that coming from the South of New Zealand is no barrier to sharing in the successes and opportunities that brings. The next theme was exploring options for further education and for that we heard from Jenny Brasted from Connexis talking about careers in the Trades and Professor Jon Hickford from Lincoln University talking about university life and study. Allison Beckham from Southland Youth Futures also spoke about a new initiative available to our students called Passport to Work. These were followed by workshops on applying for jobs with Heidi Gillingham from AJ Hackett Bungy, Stan McDowall from Black Feather Studios on creating a career out of social media and looking after your mental health with Ms Bartley from the Guidance Department. We finished off in the afternoon with a talk on resilience and self-belief from Marcus Akuhuta-Brown, who described his own journey from growing up in a home without power or water near Gisborne to becoming a school Principal and a member of the Commonwealth Youth Caucus. The latter position involved travelling all over the world and meeting Heads of State, Royal Families and working hard to change the lives of others along the way. We hope that our students found belief in themselves and in setting their sights on doing anything they want to do from his talk and we encourage them to talk to staff members and parents about their dreams and ambitions resulting from the day. There were significant costs involved in staging this event and so we thank the companies and organsations who subsidised this, they were:

Following our carefully staged plan, our 1-1 device environment (commonly called BYOD - Bring Your Own Device) will be operating this year from Years 7 to 11.We strongly recommend that, where at all possible, students be equipped with their own personal device at these year levels next year.We do not prescribe a particular brand, device, or retailer.

Attention Parents of Years 7-11Personal Devices

Teachers are available to help your child in Before School Math classes every Tuesday and Friday morning from 8.15 to 8.40 am (in the Fabrics Room). This is an individualised programme, so it caters for extension as well as support. Students can attend as they need, not necessarily every session. If you would like to be involved as “parent help” please come along. This programme starts on Friday 8th of March.

Parents are asked not to park in either of the staff carparks within school grounds. There is a visitors park available in front of the office should you need to access the office.

Students may wear plain white caps or hats when outside during summer. They are not to be worn in class and must have the name written on the inside. We encourage students to bring their own sunscreen but do have it available on the counter at the school office.

Each morning classes have the day’s notices read out to them. Notices include information on academic, sports and cultural activities available to students. These notices are available on the James Hargest website after 11am.

Payments for both camps, Deep Cove and Omaui, are now due.All payments sent to the school with your children must have their full name, room number and state what the money is for. Payments are made to the school office. Payments can be in cash, cheque, internet banking or by eftpos. Partial payments and automatic payments are welcome.

When you phone in an absence, please give the reason so it can be recorded with the correct coding in the attendance system. Please note that classes start at 8.50am and students are to be in class by that time. If students come in late, they are to go to the office before going to class to have their names deleted from the absence list.

The Vision Technicians visit the Junior Campus to undertake vision screening for all Year 7 students and colour vision screening for Year 7 male students. Your child will not be screened if they are under the care of a Specialist and/or Optometrist. Parents/caregivers will be notified if further assessment is required by an Optometrist. If you do NOT wish your child to be screened, please notify the school. Some Year 8 students who were absent in Year 7, or who require retesting, may also be seen by the Vision Technicians.
