PARSON’S CAREER NIGHT Sophomore Micaela Parson has, by now, established herself as the second scoring option to Janelle Hubbard on the Spiders roster in the absence of Lauren Tolson. Parson has emerged from a non-descript freshman campaign to average 12.3 points per game, culminating in a 23 point performance at VCU. She canned 17 of those points in the first half alone. FREE THROWS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE Richmond is 8-4 this season when it makes more free throws than its opponent, 0-8 when it does not and 1-0 when it makes the same amount. The Spiders have struggled from the line this season but have shown if they can get to the line and convert more than their opponent, the success rate jumps up. TOUGH STRETCH The Spiders have reached the part of their schedule that will be the toughest test of the season. Beginning with the tilt opposite Duquesne, Richmond will play four consecutive games against the four team currently ranked 1-4 in the Atlantic 10 standings. The Spiders travelled to St. Bonaventure (2nd) last Sunday, Saint Louis (3rd) on Wednesday and welcome George Washington (1st) the following Sunday. Those four teams have a combined record of 73-13 this season. JANELLE HUBBARD GOES FOR 1,000 Hubbard entered the A-10 opener opposite La Salle needing just three points to become the 22nd member of the Richmond 1,000-point club and did so with a pair of buckets in the first half on the 17-point victory. Later in the game she passed Christina King to move into 21st on the all-time scoring list. BIG WEEK FOR HUBBARD Janelle Hubbard has embraced the role of go-to scorer since the injury to Lauren Tolson and it became most apparent the week of Jan. 13 with a pair of career performances. The junior rattled off 25 points on a career-high 11 made field goals at Saint Joseph’s then followed that up with a career-best 32 points in a win at UMass. Her 30-point performance was the first for a Spider since Rachael Bilney did so in 2012. Hubbard rests at 1,134 points, placing her 15th on the all-time scoring list. SHUT THE DOOR Richmond this season is 9-1 when leading after the third quarter and 9-0 when leading with five minutes to play, showing that the Spiders have the ability to hold a lead when it has one late in games. The defense is allowing just 60.2 points per game and holds opponents to a .293 mark from deep. MURPHREE’S STAT SHEET Kylie Murphree is often left off the list of names mentioned as key contributors for the Spiders but her role on the court cannot be ignored. The sophomore guard has been at the healm of the offense for one and a half seasons now while also being consistently asked to guard the opposition’s best player. Murphree broke out against Rhode Island but not in the categories most often looked at. She booked career bests with seven assists, five steals and a trio of blocked shots in the game, cementing her role as top defensive option for the Spiders.
SEEMINGLY MEANINGLESS STAT - OR IS IT? From the “that’s an odd stat” department ... Richmond has posted a staggering 8-4 record when it scores first in the game against a 1-8 record when the opponent scores first. Often times 2-0 or 3-0 can be meanlingless in a game that lasts 40 minutes but maybe there is more to scoring first than meets the eye. TOLSON FOR 33333333333333333333 Lauren Tolson was on fire from distance to begin her senior season before going down with an injury. The Frederick, Md. native made 20 shots from beyond the arc and hit nine vs. EKU and William & Mary combined. With her first made triple vs. Wichita State the senior reached 100 made three balls for her career. WIKE DOUBLES UP Karleigh Wike started the first seven games for the Spiders and averaged just 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds before losing her starting spot. She regained it opposite Wake Forest on Dec. 20 and has reinvented her game. She posted an 11-point, 12-rebound night opposite Lafayette, both of which are career-bests.
TAISHA CATCHES FIRE The freshman from Clayton, N.C. missed the first eight games of her de-but campaign with an injury and slowly worked her way into the rotation over her first four on the floor before having a breakout performance at Virginia on Dec. 29. Murphy went off for 14 points on 5-7 shooting, including 4-6 from three-point range, all in the second half of the game. She did so in just 17 minutes of action after scoring a total of six points over her first four games combined. PRESEASON AWARDS Richmond has been chosen by the coaches of the Atlantic 10 to fin-ish sixth in the league behind George Washington, Dayton, Duquesne, Fordham and Saint Louis, respectively. Junior guard Janelle Hubbard, the Spiders top-returning scorer, was recognized as a Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection after posting 13.9 points per game a season ago. FRESHMEN SHINE Tuuli Menna and Salita Greene have been a breath of fresh air for the Spiders who lost All-Conference post prescence Gen Okoro in the offseason. Menna has started all eight games she appeared in to begin the season for Richmond averaging 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds while Greene has came off the bench early and is now averaging 21.9 minutes, 5.6 points and 5.7 rebounds. Greene has gone for double-digit rebounds on three occassions including a 13-board performance at Wake Forest. POSTSEASON SUCCESSThe Richmond Spiders played in the postseason for the sixth in the last seven years in 2014 which marked the ninth time the team has played in the WNIT. The selection marked the 12th overall postseason appearance in program history. All-time in the WNIT, the Spiders are 9-11.

MICHAEL SHAFER BECOMES WINNINGEST COACH On Saturday, Jan. 24, 2014, Richmond head coach Michael Shafer became the most winningest coach in Richmond women’s basketball history as he notched his 167th-career victory as a Spider over the UMass Minutewomen. Following his 10th season at Richmond, Shafer was 174-141 all-time and with that win surpassed the famous Fanny Crenshaw - Richmond’s long-time coach of 35 years. Crenshaw was 166-58-5 over her 35 years (1919-1955) as Richmond’s head coach. RVA WELCOMES A-10 TOURNAMENT Last season was the second of a three-year partnership with the Atlantic 10 Conference and the City of Richmond to host the A-10 Women’ s Basketball Tournament at the Richmond Coliseum. The tournament had been played the previous two years at Hagan Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph’s. Last year, Richmond defeated UMass in the first round before falling to Fordham. RICHMOND WELCOMES THREE NEWCOMERS The Spiders welcome three freshman for the 2015-16 season; Salita Greene, Tuuli Menna and Taisha Murphy. Claiborne Robins family, the Robins Center underwent a $17 million renovation in 2013-2014 that has transformed it into one of the premier college basketball arenas in the nation, while drawing rave reviews from players, coaches, fans and media. The renovations created a more intimate game day atmosphere and provided enhanced amenities for basketball fans. The renovations to the main arena of the Robins Center included new state-of-the-art LED lighting, midnight blue painted ceiling, four 15 feet by 32 feet video boards, scoreboards, refurbished seats, new premium seating options, new terrace hospitality areas, a refinished/newly painted court and ren-ovated restrooms. The video boards are the largest in the Atlantic 10 conference, and among the largest of any on-campus arena in the ACC or Big East.

2015-16 Richmond Women’s Basketball
HEAD COACH MICHAEL SHAFER University of Richmond women’s basketball head coach Michael Shafer enters his 11th season at the helm for Richmond in 2015-16. Shafer guided the Spiders to five-straight WNIT postseason appearances from 2009-2013 and again in 2015 where the team advanced to the second round. The Spiders were awarded a bye in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament after finishing in the top-4 for the third time in the last five years.
Shafer has amassed a 183-153 (.545) record while at Richmond in ten years. On Jan. 24, 2015, he became the winningest women’s coach at Richmond when the Spiders defeated UMass for his 167th career triumph. He passed legendary coach Fannie Crenshaw, who guided the Spiders for 35 years.
Shafer led Richmond to a 23-9 mark in 2011-12, its most wins since 2008-09 and fewest losses since 2004-05.
The National Women’s Basketball Insider named Shafer one of the nation’s top coaches in 2011-12. Shafer was one of 13 coaches that were recognized.
Shafer collected his 100th win against GW in 2012. He is only one of three coaches at Richmond to eclipse the century mark total.
Shafer has led Richmond to 20-win seasons in three of the last seven years and has guided the Spiders to six postseason WNIT appearances in that span. In 2008-09, Shafer posted the most successful season in his tenure, after helping guide the Spiders to a 24-10 record, a runner-up appearance in the 2009 Atlantic 10 Tournament and school’s fourth bid to the WNIT. The 24-10 record marked the most wins since the 1988-89 season and third best overall record in program history.
Prior to his time at Richmond, Shafer spent 11 years as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia, serving his last two seasons as the associate head coach. He helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to 11-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and four Southeastern Conference championships, three regular-season titles and one tournament title. During his tenure, Georgia posted a 273-85 (.762) record and advanced to three NCAA Final Fours, appearing in the 1996 championship game.
A proven recruiter, he helped Georgia head coach Andy Landers sign five Top 10 freshmen classes and inked the country’s fifth best class in 2005. Shafer signed five high school All-Americans while serving his last three years at Georgia as the Lady Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator.
In addition, Shafer was instrumental in the development of current WNBA players Coco Miller, Kelly Miller and Deanna Nolan, a 2003 All-Star.
Shafer was named as one of the nation’s Top 10 assistant women’s basketball coaches in an informal internet survey of more than 750 coaches and administrators conducted by womenshoopscoop.com in 2003. His numerous contributions to the program were rewarded in June of 2003 when he was promoted to associate head coach.
A 1994 graduate of William & Mary, Shafer earned a spot on the men’s basketball team as a walk-on. He served as team co-captain in 1994 and served on the Student-Athletic Council during his senior season.
The Athens, Ga. native received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William & Mary and earned his master’s degree in sport management from Georgia in 1997. Shafer, 42, has two daughters, Sophie Rinne (10), and Summer Reese (eight). Shafer married his wife, Denise, on Oct. 18, 2015.
