THE PASTOR SPEAKS

I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them. (Hosea 11:4)

I remember when God and I were best friends. The long walks, the hours spent quietly and alone in Bukit Timah Hill Forest Reserve; yet I was never alone. We had deep conversations. No subject was off-limits – we talked about the beautiful and the ugly, my raw feelings of hatred and lust, my lofty dreams and wild aspirations. Obeying God was not a dread; it was a joy. Not a moment passed when I did not yearn for snatches of time to talk with God.

What drew me to God was first, a welling inside me of a powerful sense of being loved that defied description. I found myself passionately in love with God. I felt safe when I spoke with God, and I felt powerful. I felt as though no obstacle was too difficult for God and me to scale. Most of all, I found that we shared a common passion for the many hurting people I met every day.

I fear that we, no I, have formalized God. I am embarrassed to talk of God in endearing terms, of God as a friend we could fall in love with. We think it is safer to be proper, to perform our duties to God, to give mental assent to His decrees, to acknowledge His Presence. While we use a language of reverence, it is also formal, business-like, an officious attitude towards God.

Safer perhaps. Certainly less vulnerable, more controlled. But with it, we risk losing the passionate friendship, the quiet sobbing of one overwhelmed by love, the simple obedience of a child eager to please his Father.

The lyrics of the song “You were Always on My Mind” (made famous by Willie Nelson) express regret of a friendship gone formal, and a longing for a return to the first love.

“For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6,7 NIV) We declared these verses in unison at the 3 services held in the sanctuary along with the familiar carols. “Silent Night, Holy Night”, “Joy to the World” and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” on Christmas Day December 25, 2014. Rev Malcolm Tan’s message at the 3 services was from Luke 2:10-14 and was entitled “The Sign of the Christ Child”. We were reminded of our God with us Emmanuel, who offers us the exchange of our fears for His joy, our troubled hearts for His peace and our sin for His pardon and reconciliation. We rejoice that His favour rests upon us (2:14). Glory to God in the highest.

The church held an appreciation and farewell dinner party for our outgoing Pastor-In-Charge, Rev Malcolm Tan at the ACS Auditorium on the evening of December 28. Rev Tan was posted to Covenant Community Methodist Church (CCMC) effective January 1, 2015 at the 39th Session of the Trinity Annual Conference. It is noteworthy to mention that CCMC started out as a preaching point birthed from BRMC and Wesley Methodist Church in 1993 and it became a full-fledged Methodist Church in 1994. Almost 600 people were in attendance at the dinner party to bid a fitting farewell to our beloved pastor and to show our heartfelt appreciation for his faithful leadership over God’s church for 16.5 years.

Local Church Executive Committee (LCEC) Vice-Chairman Loke Beng Fong hosted the dinner which began with a reprisal of a dance by the Creative Arts Ministry choreographed to the 2014 Church Camp theme song “Send Us Forth”.

Chan Kai Yau and Benjamin BC Tan, who were both former LCEC chairmen, commended Rev Tan. Benjamin referred to Rev Tan as “a special Pastor to us all” whose “faithful pastoral ministry touched all our lives...serving the LORD in BRMC with great care and dedication...bringing the message of God’s Word alive and relevant in so many ways”.

When it was time for Rev Tan to share his parting words, he thanked church leaders and staff in partnering with Him to grow God’s church. In growing God’s church, Rev Tan quipped that the Pastors also grow together with the church. Rev Tan took time to ask his fellow pastoral team, Rev Dr Chiu Ming Li, Rev Lawrence Chua, Rev See Swee Fang and Rev Edmund Koh (Rev Daniel Terence Yeo was away), to stand with him on stage to give glory to God and to ask for the church to support this new team to be led by our incoming Pastor-In-Charge, Rev Dr Chiu in the coming year.

Tan Loo Yeh, Rev Tan’s wife also took the stage to deliver kind words of appreciation back to the church for their long-standing and continued love and support to her and her family. Loo Yeh and her sons will continue to worship and minister in BRMC. Loo Yeh’s faithful service with the Women’s Society for Christian Service (WSCS) was commended by BRMC WSCS President, Vivienne Chiang who presented Loo Yeh with a token of appreciation.

The closing song “Thanks To God For My Redeemer” was led by Lim-Low Sow Yee accompanied by Dr Benjamin Ong on the keyboard. We praise God for the many who worked behind the scenes to make the event a success and to all who wanted to give Rev Tan a beautiful farewell. We wish Rev Tan every blessing at his new posting.

As we bid farewell to Rev. Malcolm Tan who spent 16.5 years with BRMC, Yeo Yee Ying, pays tribute to him with a poem below. Yee Ying worships at the 5pm Sunday service and sings in the choir. She is a regular contributor to our church newsletter Uphill & Beyond. Yee Ying has this to say: “A poem dedication to Pastor Malcolm Tan and the flock that he shepherded at Barker Road Methodist Church. We will always remember our shepherd. May he be to us a pastor who gave his heart and life to Jesus Christ that we may do likewise unto the Lord.”

A team of 4 trippers and the new Cambodia Sub Committee Chairman, Christopher Khoo set out on July 25, 2014 to visit and update ourselves with the recent developments in Phnom Penh as well as to explore new outreach opportunities in northern Cambodia, Banteay Meachey Province. Here is the account of the meaningful trip with photos.

CAMBODIA MISSIONS:RENEWING OLD PARTNERSHIPS, ESTABLISHING NEW FRONTIERS

Phnom Penh ChapterUpon arrival in Phnom Penh the team went straight into action visiting Boeungkok Methodist Church kindergarten & Methodist School of Cambodia Kindergarten (MSC). It was a joy to see the vibrant MSC Kindergarten campus and how it is growing year by year by the grace of God.

Exploring potential outreach site for a youth centre led the team to the industrial (garment factories) district of Phnom Penh. The pot-holes laden main street and the overall environment revealed a sad image of tough working conditions for factory workers. May we continue to uphold the blue collar workers in prayer that their working conditions will be improved and their living standards will be elevated with a steady income.

The next day, the team participated in Prek Toal Methodist Church Kindergarten’s graduation. BRMC has been supporting this Kindergarten since it started in 2008. We thank God for the progress in this Kindergarten. It started off with BRMC teams planning the entire graduation programme but now we only need to play a supportive role. The children’s performance was a reflection of the teachers’ dedication. The team planned a friendly captain’s ball game and some relay games for the parents. It was truly a joy to see the children, teachers and parents enjoying themselves that morning.

As a keepsake momento for the graduates, the team took pictures of each student and teacher, and helped them mount it onto a handmade decorative picture frame. The children also took home a handcrafted cross pendant decked with colourful hearts prepared by Jesmin Lim from Singapore who did not manage to join us at the trip but volunteered to help us with the preparation. Banteay Meacheay ChapterNext the team readied themselves for the 6 hours van ride to Banteay Meanchey,a province 100 km from Siem Reap. The drive took us through padi fields and remote villages. Our partner Church, Banteay Meanchey Methodist Church (BMC), organised an evangelistic Sunday service. The Church was full, the youths led in vibrant praise and worship and the team gave a testimony. After the service, the poorest in the community were blessed with a feast and gifts of blankets and towels. Thereafter, the team went to the more remote residential area to meet some of the villagers in the neighbourhood, a district subject to flooding every rainy season.

The BMC members took leave from work and brought us to visit and minister at two rural churches (Mongkolborey and Korng Va Methodist churches). The team and BMC members blessed the children in these churches physically and spiritually through anti-hair-lice hair washing, hair and nail cutting as well as interactive games and songs. The rural church visits left a deep sense of admiration for the BMC Members. Their spirit and zeal to serve the community was apparent through the love and blessing they shared with the poor. The BMC members demonstrated devotion and commitment, ever mindful to protect the young children from the snares of drugs and sex traffickers that pervaded the province. We left Banteay Meanchey with hearts encouraged to return with medical support and to uphold our brothers & sisters serving in the fields there.

Our final destination before returning home was in Siem Reap. There we met the local Methodist pastor Rev Lun Sophy who shared with us his programme in the community. A pastor and wife team dedicated to help the poor by building a tuition centre cum Church. Rev Lun Sophy also shared with us his chicken rearing project in the community. This was the brainchild of a young university student cum teacher. The project involved teaching the villagers to build chicken pens and how to take care of the chickens even when it floods. It aims to help villagers to earn more income as well as an outreach platform for Church members to visit the villagers under this project. Overall, the trip was a fruitful one where the Lord opened doors for future ministry in the province of Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap.

Regardless of the number of mission trips we make, each trip carries a renewed revelation of God’s awesome works in the fields. A new experience each trip that will spur you forward and challenge your comfort zone to go forth to serve in His kingdom on earth! Doing God’s work is truly a marvellous adventure beyond our wildest imagination. It is always a joy to serve in the Lord’s mission fields!

Shalom Foundation (Vellore)We spent the first part of our trip with Pastor Jayapaul and his team from the Shalom Foundation. We visited and ministered at various sites within Vellore and Yelagiri Hills, and we had the opportunity to witness the amazing work of the Shalom team in their ministry to needy and destitute children and youths. There was such a strong sense of God’s love and peace flowing through the children’s home, youth training centre, and village night schools run by Shalom. This ministry has touched countless lives in its over 20 years of existence, and Pastor Jayapaul remembers with amazing clarity, the many names, life stories, talents and achievements of Shalom children past and present. He beams with pride and joy as he speaks of them. He and his entire staff serve with a tireless compassion, and in the gentleness, love, humility and faithfulness of Jesus. The fruit of their sacrifice is evident in the hope and joy radiating from the faces of the children and youth, whose vitality and zest for life is extremely contagious. The ministry staff and the children of the Shalom Foundation shine brightly as lights in a dark world, full of the life spoken of in John 1:4, “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind”.

The BRMC Upper Room Service commissioned an eight-member team for a mission trip to South India from August 29 to September 5, 2014. They were: Benjamin BC Tan, Susannah Tan, Hui Mei Ling, William Teo, Deborah Ho, Esmond Yong, Gwendaline Lee and Khoo Boo Tiong. The strong presence and grace of God were with them throughout the trip. Team members fell in love with the people they met there, many of whom were from the Dalit caste and considered by society to be “untouchable”. Though themselves living under impoverished conditions, they lavished the team with extravagant hospitality that so greatly moved their hearts. God showed the team members beautiful examples of the amazing fruit borne out of lives lived in surrender and obedience to God’s calling. This article is written to honour the works and worship of the faithful in the mission field of South India, who are often unseen and unnamed, but to whom “the pearl of great price” is of far greater value than any fame or riches the world can offer. ChittoorThe next leg of the trip was spent in Chittoor with the ministry team led by Brother Paul and Sister Shantha, who for many years have relentlessly and selflessly laid down their lives for the cause of the Gospel. We visited St Paul’s Vidyalaya (SPV) School, which was founded by them. For many of the students here, this will be the place where they will first hear the Good News of the Gospel and be introduced to Jesus as loving God and Saviour. This will also be a place where hope is birthed and the promise of a future is nurtured, particularly for the majority of students who come from very poor families.

Signs, wonders and miraclesDuring our ministry in Vellore and Chittoor, God moved powerfully among the people who came up to the altar for prayers. Many whom we prayed for were healed from headaches, pains and all kinds of physical complaints and illnesses! There was also a great harvest of souls, many rushing to the altar to receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour! Hallelujah!

More than stepping into the amazing things that God is doing through His people and witnessing His power at work among them, this experience has brought us all so much closer to the heart of God. We were filled with His love, His goodness, His kindness, His generosity, and His humility. I cannot begin to describe this adequately in words, but it feels like we touched a piece of heaven and had seen up close the very face and heart of Jesus. In Isaiah 57:15, God says “....I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” This Scripture verse came to life for me during this trip, as did so many others. I think this is what makes our God beautiful - it is the exceeding abundance of love, goodness, kindness, humility and holiness in His heart.

On a personal note, I have to say that I embarked on this trip thinking that this would be a chance for me to be a blessing. However, I did not expect that I would be blessed so much more than I could ever have imagined. I left India with the deep knowledge that I had been forever changed by this experience. The faces of all the people we met there, especially the children, are etched in my mind and I do not think that I can ever forget them. Please pray that the partnership between BRMC and the various ministries in India will continue to flourish. Pray for the nation of India - that His Light will continue to shine even in the darkest of places, and never be extinguished.

To God be all the praise, honour and glory, Amen and Amen!

The URS Team with Brother Paul and Sister Shantha

Besides SPV School, the team ministered with Brother Paul and Sister Shantha at various village outreaches. Brother Paul and Sister Shantha have been actively involved in spreading the Gospel of Jesus and planting churches in remote villages that are often inaccessible by public transport. They regularly carry stacks of tracts and Bibles on motorbike to distribute to the villagers, many a time braving unfavourable weather conditions and venturing through rough terrain in the pitch darkness of night. They oversee a group of church planters who also do the same, except that some go on foot because they cannot afford motorbikes. Our hearts were stirred and inspired by their devotion to the cause of Christ. They are all living testimonies of the overcoming light of Christ spoken of in John 1:5, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.

Our hearts were captured by the Father’s heart at the recent URS Evangelistic Service.

The service started with worship leader, Mr Edward Ong, leading the congregation in prayers soaked in compassion, for those who were oppressed and broken around us, and for those in war-torn countries who had lost their families and were experiencing great suffering.

During the rousing worship, Jesus was exalted as the One who opens prison doors and sets the captives free, from whom living waters flow. Our hearts and mouths gave Him glory as we declared that there is no other Name under heaven and on earth by which men can be saved. Words of edification were then released to the congregation. Those who were continuing to stand afar were encouraged to draw near for He is our Friend and the answer. Psalm 123 exhorted us to lift our eyes off our discouragement and the cares of this life, and look to the Lord our God, who has mercy and loving-kindness on us.

BRMC UPPER ROOM SERVICE (URS)

URS EVANGELISTIC SERVICE: DIGNITY

RESTORED

BRMC’s Upper Room Service (URS) held an evangelistic service on August 31, 2014. Evangelist Edwin Filles, who is from South Africa and attached to Youth With A Mission (YWAM) was invited to share from the Word on the pulpit that morning. In his message, he recounted to the congregation about his early childhood struggles which had caused him to harbour much anger, hurt and bitterness. However, through the saving grace of Jesus he came to accept and forgive those who had brought much pain in his life. Many in the congregation came away from the service blessed by his message on dignity and its significance to us, the redeemed of the Lord. The Lord ministered to many that day. He ministered to marriages, broken lives, those of us trying to hold on to our lives, not wanting to let go. It was an invitation to surrender our hearts and lives, to come ‘home’ into His life where we belong, as His beloved, children of the living God. Those bound up for years by unforgiveness and bitterness towards others were encouraged to untie the knots, not condoning the wrongs done, but to acknowledge that God is the judge and to release it to Him.

Even for those of us who have walked with Him for a long time, some have felt that the road has been difficult, weary and depressed. Some have always felt left out. But the Lord restored joy and set many hearts free that day.

Restore our hearts Jesus! Thank you for freedom and dignity! Amen.

South African evangelist attached to Youth with A Mission (YWAM), Edwin Filles, then shared from Luke 13. This recounts the woman in a synagogue who had an infirmity caused by a spirit and who was bent completely forward and unable to straighten herself up for 18 years. In a time and an environment where women stayed behind the dividers in synagogues and were unseen, Jesus saw her! This is the Gospel of Jesus. It challenges the status quo.

Edwin Filles shared that in this world the names of the powerful and the wealthy are known, but Jesus sees what no man sees. This woman was crippled and unseen, she was not meant to be chosen in her generation, but He called her to Him in full view of all present and healed her. There was more than physical healing that day - there was inner healing because Jesus is the One who restores our dignity. While respect is earned, dignity is what God had placed within each one of us when He made us.

Dignity is to be loved, to belong and to be included. God sees the poorest of the poor sleeping by the sidewalks, He also sees the one in the high tower, surrounded by the greatest success yet feels empty, unwanted in his heart. Jesus has included us in His promises.

Today, the same Jesus is here in the house! Some of us have come to church every week. We have left the same way we have come, but God desires to open our eyes to see ourselves and others.

The Witness & Evangelism Ministry (W&E) aims to proclaim the Gospel to all people, using proven and creative methodologies that are culturally sensitive and relevant. One way in which the Ministry reaches out is through the Alpha Course, conducted twice annually in BRMC. The 12-week course, which includes a ‘weekend away’ typically draws about 35 participants and 15 helpers. Here is an account of the Alpha Weekend Retreat that took place in March 2014 by Derrick Yeo.

On a Saturday evening in March last year, many may have thought that there was a lively party taking place in a Changi hotel.

But this was no party and the evening that was about to begin was anything but ordinary. Rather, some lives were about to be transformed.

Upon completion of dinner, a group of enthusiastic (but somewhat anxious) Alpha course participants entered the function room to attend an evening talk entitled “How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit”.

Following the talk was an invitation made to the participants. That was no ordinary invitation either. With “Is there more to life than this?” being the central theme preceding this event, this may well be the most important invitation one can and will receive in their lives - an invitation to accept Christ as Lord and Saviour.

And praise be to God, 17 participants responded to the call and accepted Christ into their lives. Revelations 3:20, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” For them, Christ was no longer waiting at the door and knocking. Indeed, their lives will never be the same again, with Christ by their side.

That was what happened at the Alpha Weekend Retreat. The retreat (also called the weekend getaway) is a part of the 12-week Alpha Course conducted by the church. Our church conducts two Alpha courses a year: One that starts in January and the other, in July. The Alpha Course provides an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, non-confrontational and friendly environment. It is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. Weekly sessions begin with a meal, followed by a short talk and small group discussion on what’s been taught.

In an interview with Nicky Gumbel, author of the newly-revised Alpha Course, Ravi Zacharias describes the Alpha course as one that clears the path filled with obstacles for the Holy Spirit to sweep in to touch the hearts and lives of the participants. Helping to clear the path, is a team of dedicated facilitators who give, not just many hours of their time but also of their hearts. From the weekly catering of food to facilitating post-talk small group discussions, this assembly of men and women put together by God continue to inspire and support one another in the Alpha team, commissioned to fulfill the ultimate purpose and be of service to all as taught to us in Mark 16:15, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation”.

Called to serve as the course leader in 2014, and knowing next to nothing in the inner workings of how to run a course, it was with the support of this team of highly effective facilitators, empowered by the Holy Spirit, that we were able to complete the year’s double run of the Alpha Course.

As 2014 comes to a close, we look back at a fruitful year of how both participants and facilitators have grown closer to the Lord. With that deep abiding knowledge, love and faith propelling us, we look forward to another year of the Alpha Course, another year of new friendships and of witnessing God’s power and amazing grace.

BRMC OSC currently provides Financial Assistance to about 80 needy individuals or families. They are usually referred to us by the Singapore General Hospital and other organizations when a breadwinner can no longer work temporarily or permanently. Each individual or family is assigned a caregiver like in this case, Matthew Tham. The role of the caregiver is not just to deliver the monthly cheque and help out in practical ways but also to gently introduce Christian values. OSC also provides Education Bursaries to needy students. Each student is assigned a befriender from BRMC.

In our previous issue of Uphill & Beyond July to October 2014 we featured an article by our Outreach & Social Concerns Ministry (OSC) entitled “A Caregiver’s Perspective”. The article was by Matthew Tham who shared about Christian outreach to Mdm Khoo Siew Luan and family. Matthew is a BRMC OSC caregiver. We featured many photos of Mdm Khoo’s flat which lacked much of the most basic furniture and was seriously in need of a good coat of paint. Matthew Tham and OSC church worker Janet Lee have been working hard to help Mdm Khoo to repaint the flat and to secure the necessary basic furniture for her and her family. On this page are photos of Mdm Khoo’s flat with a new coat of paint and new furniture made possible by donations and church sponsors. In addition, Alan Lim writes a brief description of the role of the OSC caregiver ministry in BRMC.

BRMC’s Outreach & Social Concerns Ministry (OSC) reach out to the members of the St Luke’s Eldercare at Whampoa (SLEC) every Friday through songs, activities and the sharing of the God’s Word. They play interactive games and provide snacks to the elderly members and their caregivers. There are 24 caregivers who accompany their elderly charges to SLEC everyday. These Filipino, Indonesian or Myanmese domestic helpers are precious mothers, daughters, sisters or wives who have left their loved ones at home to look after our elderly people in Singapore. We praise God for providing OSC an opportunity to show appreciation for the love and care they shower on the elderly at a caregiver’s appreciation party on August 29, 2014. Let us to tell you more about them.

Hanny’s story...

Hanny came to Singapore a little over two years ago to take care of 100-year-old Madam Tan Hin Mooi. Little did she know that six months into her job, Madam Tan’s 72-year-old daughter would be stricken with cancer and thereafter also needed her care. Every morning, Hanny wheels Mdm Tan to SLEC, then hurries off to do marketing and cook lunch for Mdm Tan’s daughter. Before noon, she returns to SLEC to feed Mdm Tan her lunch. It is for caregivers such as Hanny, that the appreciation party was held.

Tommy, the volunteer worship leader, kicked off the party with “Dahil Sayo”, “Bengawan Solo” and “Chan Mali Chan”, which drew active participation and joyful dancing by caregivers, the elderly, staff and volunteers. About 10 elderly friends then dedicated the song “A Gift of Love” which they had practised for weeks, to caregivers. Following the song, Madam Tan Pek Ngin presented a big thank-you card to caregivers signed by many elderly friends. Madam Chin said a big thank-you to her caregiver Joy on behalf of all the elderly. The caregivers, who were each introduced to the audience, also took turns to perform songs in their native languages. SLEC staff, Peter, also presented a song. On behalf of BRMC, Pastor Jun and Lai Fun said a few words of appreciation to caregivers in English, Tagalog and Bahasa Indonesia. We also gave a Hello phone card to each caregiver, as a token of appreciation. The party closed with a benediction by Pastor Jun.

The elderly friends at SLEC were reminded that as their caregivers had made great sacrifices to come to Singapore, they should be appreciated and treated with dignity and respect. It is hoped that caregivers felt Jesus’ love that day and as a result, will be more open to the good news we bring to SLEC and come to know Christ.

WSCS LADIES’ RETREAT: THE RIVER OF LIFE

The vision of BRMC’s Women’s Society For Christian Service (BRMC) is to build a community of love amongst amongst the women who attend the church. And with this strong support, draw, equip and empower women of all ages to make a positive impact on their families, the church and the larger Christian community. BRMC WSCS runs many programmes and activities throughout the year to facilitate fellowship, to equip parents, to nurture discipleship as well as to teach life skills—such as culinary and craft. Over the next 3 pages, we feature a report on the BRMC WSCS Ladies Prayer Retreat by Ong Cheow Lan together with photos and testimonies of participants.

Last November 2014, our facilitator Mrs Christina Zheng took us on a fascinating tour of the river, the swamps and marshes, the vivid landscape of our heart including the clogged up sewers of our lives.

Through the teaching of the Living Word and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, all 42 of us could identify specifically the swamps and marshes in our seasons of our life’s journey.

We came hungry for a word in season, and we were not disappointed. We learnt about ungodly soul ties, managing control, handling fears and spiritual warfare. We prayed over our unresolved issues that were hindering us from living the abundant life of joy and peace.

The one hour of quiet reflection time was meaningful. Quite a number of us recorded our revelations, our thoughts and our prayers in the journals that were given to us at the retreat. Some were moved to tears as the Holy Spirit ministered to them.

We came away refreshed by the rivers of living water. All said they would like to attend the retreat again. All praise and glory be to our Almighty God. Look out for the WSCS Retreat next year and join us for River of Life Part 3!

Growing Deep In Christ (GDIC) is a spiritual formation course that helps foster the spiritual disciplines of Quiet Time, Prayer, Meditating and Memorizing Scripture. Participants also embark on a journey to lead a Christ-centred life. BRMC’s Discipleship and Nurture Ministry were able to run 4 classes of GDIC in the year 2014. Interestingly, there were many married couples who committed to attend GDIC together. The couples discovered that as they grew closer to God, they were able to testify that their relationship with each other was also strengthened. We praise the Lord for His loving Hand in blessing the marriages at BRMC through GDIC. “We have drawn closer through our sharing - not just about our children, careers and ambitions but also about our walks with our Heavenly Father. Being able to share this with each other has helped deepen our relationship from a spiritual perspective. By openly acknowledging Christ as Lord of our lives, marriage and family, we have gained a new perspective on how we confront difficulties and challenges. Scripture that we memorized during the course have also been very helpful in exhorting and encouraging each other during times of frustration and desperation.

Through increased commitment to prayer and application of God’s word, we have re-affirmed our values and goals for our family. This has led to more intentional conversations and interactions with our daughters, for example, greater discipline in praying with and reading the Bible with them and more reflection on how we can be better role models for our children.

The second run of the Marriage Preparation Course (MPC) began in August with 18 couples. This course is not just intended for couples who are already engaged and are about to get married soon. In fact, some of the couples that came for the two runs of the course were not yet engaged but wanted to have a deeper understanding of their relationship. By taking this course at an earlier stage, many couples are able to appreciate each other better and work towards a happier, more fulfilling journey in life together. BRMC Counsellor Chiang Ming Cherng writes this short report which includes testimonies from the couples who attended the course.

Using the PREPARE/ENRICH inventory, couples learn more about the different aspects of their relationship and explore ways to build a closer and stronger relationship with one another and God through individual sessions with the guidance of a counsellor. Couples also go through five class sessions that explore the biblical concepts of marriage, managing conflicts differently and other issues that may affect a couple’s relationship.

BRMC runs the Marriage Preparation Course (MPC) twice a year; one beginning in March and the other in August. The course is open to any couple interested in building up their a relationship and would like to know more about one another. Each run is able to cater up to a maximum of 15 participants and priority is given to members of BRMC. If you are planning to get married soon, we look forward to seeing you at our next run starting in March or August. Registration details will be announced in the church bulletin. This past year (2014) has seen GYM glow more brightly, with more activities for its members. It has also grown in Christian maturity, as seen in the increasing closeness of its members to God and to one another during its various activities, some of which are highlighted below.

GYM Activity DayThis takes place every Wednesday, from 10am to 5pm. The enthusiasm of the GYM seniors is palpable, with a number of them turning up well before 10am.

The day’s activities include about an hour’s morning devotions in which members learn to pray and to walk more closely with God. They then play board games such as Rummikub, Scrabble, checkers, and Chinese checkers. Some practice on the ukulele, while others do some craft work. Everyone does stretching exercises before delving into a Bible-study session based on Bishop Emeritus Robert Solomon’s book, The Sermon on the Mount, and an educational video on lessons from the Old Testament which takes place on alternate weeks.

Besides food for the mind and the soul, there is also nourishment for the body, with a light morning tea, lunch, and an afternoon tea/coffee break. Generous contributions of snacks by members and the warm fellowship have made these Wednesdays truly special.

BRMC’s Glowing Years Ministry (GYM) faithfully organizes activities throughout the calendar year to cater to the well-being of each member; spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically. They are on the look out for more senior members (those generally 50 years of age and above) to come and join in their activities and be blessed. I like singing with GYM. We sing hymns to praise God for His blessings and for looking after us each day. We sing oldies to bring back fond memories of yesteryears and recall how such songs help us to move on in various stages of our life. How pleasant it is to see people happily singing in GYM as long as their voices can hold. Belting out the lyrics with the accompaniment of the musicians is such a marvellous sight of hearts in unison. Truly everyone is enjoying a wonderful time with the Lord and with each other at through the sessions at GYM.

Communion with God is ascending the mountain of holiness. “Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god” (Psalm 24:3-4). We gathered in March 2009 for Boys’ Brigade (BB) Asia’s Mount Kinabalu Climb, to raise funds for BB Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines and Cambodia – a tradition initiated by Paul “Robokop” Juby. Aged 78, with two artificial hips, Paul had trained hard for this, his fourth climb.

BB Officer from Sabah, Stephen Liew warmly welcomed us with a hearty dinner at Kinabalu Park. Paul noted: “This is more than just about raising funds – we are a fellowship of friends from U.K., Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore – to encourage all Brigaders around Asia.” It began as a challenge in 1999 from Paul’s former BB boy, Michael Moorthy. Michael spoke of BB Asia’s pioneering work and how BB Malaysia’s Girls’ Wing provides a steady crop of lady officers.

After breakfast and worship, Michael flagged us off in what was to be to a sunny start. Soon we were blessed with drizzles, light, then heavy rain – our wettest climb so far! BB Hong Kong’s team of mountaineering auxiliaries expertly accompanied Paul all the way to Gunting Lagadan hostel. A very tired but happy Paul shared: “I sang Walking with Jesus along the way!” We dined and retired early for the next leg of our journey.

At 3 am we arose, prayed and set off into the cold, pitch dark. Our trusted local guide led the way. Head-lamps lit our path. Step by step, we negotiated upward trails and rope climbs round steep bends. Altitude took its toll. In the thin air, I slowed down, fell behind and eventually sat down - exhausted. Next to me, a father comforted his son, who was bent over, overcome by altitude sickness: “It’s OK, we can turn back down, son.” I thought to rest here and not continue. The crescent moon sank. Dawn broke. Early morning light lifted my spirits. Suddenly I remembered: the BB flag was in my satchel! Teammates must be anxiously waiting for me at the summit. Strength renewed, I laboured up. Small steps made for a slow trek. The uphill path seemed unending! Then came the last hurdle: an agonising crawl up rocks and boulders to Low’s Peak. Teammates greeted me with cheers. I was overjoyed. We unfurled our BB flag at the summit. Lord, we ask Thy blessings, on the Boys’ Brigade!

Below the wind, above the clouds, we admired the sweeping views of Sabah’s mountain peaks and valleys. It was a grand sight! Elated, we made our way back to Gunting Lagadan for sumptuous meals, great fellowship and sweet sleep.

Next day, we began our journey down. Clouds rolled gently into the pristine forest. Paul remarked: “God says: ‘Remember to thank Me when you get down!’ ” And we did. We celebrated with a thanksgiving dinner at Kota Kinabalu. Chaplain Rev. Richard Tok reflected: “This climb marks our journey of faith. We meet problems along the way. We need encouragement and help. Looking up at the many head-lamps winding up to the summit - it looked out of reach to us. But thanks to the support from teammates, we made it.” Paul and Michael shared jokes and fond memories – a friendship which began as BB officer and boy some forty years ago.

We said our goodbyes – until we meet again, God willing – to challenge this great mountain. Thank you Paul, for showing us that with God’s help, all things are possible. Onward!

This issue of Uphill & Beyond comes to you in the first quarter of the brand new year 2015. At the close of 2014, what resolutions did you make for this new year? Our God who makes all things new (Rev 21:5) has allowed us to make a fresh start and new beginning in 2015. On this page is an exhortation by church member Kenneth Seet. He reminds us to live as a people called to shine for Jesus, diligent in holy living, making effort to use our talents and giftings, staying faithful in forgiving and loving that all man may see Christ in us. Kenneth has been a member of BRMC since 1991 and worships at the 10.30 am service.

I was watching the movie Spiderman recently, in which the main protaganist, Peter Parker, was trying to live an undercover superhero life. He does so in hope that he can be like the man in the street, leading a ‘normal’ life. But as we all know, that is not to be and he is compelled to fulfil his superhero responsibilities to save his loved ones as well as the city he lives in.

Likewise, it made me wonder if we have been too busy with our work and social lives, or too preoccupied blending into the market place that we become so disconnected from our Christian lives and even try to hide or suppress our Christian values and character while we live lives that are of this world? Do we only show our Christian side on Sundays only and even then, only in church? Does godliness and Christian love dissipate once service is over? Are we the salt and light of the earth, or do we go undercover from Mondays to Saturdays?

In my daily life, I have found myself in situations where God or His Word is attacked or ridiculed, and I have kept silent or laughed it off to “blend in with the crowd”. It may also be situations where I am able to intervene to help a disadvantaged person who is being bullied, or someone in need, but have instead kept quiet and minded my own business for fear of getting dragged into “other people’s problems”. In some instances, I have been like Peter, in the Gospel, who boasts that he will follow Christ to the grave but following Jesus’ death on the cross and in the face of adversity, denies that he knew Him.

But God is also a God of mercy and love. He understands our struggles and gives us the grace to carry on being his special children. His patient and persevering love continues to build us up, as He waits for us to grow in confidence and trust in Him to finally shine for His glory. In 1 Peter 2:9, we are reminded that we are “a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” We are special! We are not here by a mere coincidence or by our own design. We are specially chosen by God for a purpose and that purpose is to glorify Him, the Almighty! The call to shine for God is a constant refrain in the bible. In Philippians 2:15, we are called to live a life that is beyond reproach so that we may shine like stars in the sky. Likewise in Matthew 5:14-15, we are called to be the light of the world and to give light to all those whom we come into contact. But more importantly, the second part of Matthew 5:14 says that “a town built on a hill cannot be hidden”. How true it is! We cannot and are not given the option to hide or to shy away from directing people to Christ!

Like lighthouses that guide and warn ships when they are approaching land, we too are to shine for Christ, living a life that would direct others to Christ. We cannot be undercover Christians and shy away from our priestly duties, living Christian lives only on Sundays, Easter and Christmas! Our lives are an open book for others to see, like a city built on hill, we cannot hide, secretly hoping that we will not be called to testify and glorify our Lord. We need to pray and ask God to grant us boldness and humility to lead confident Christian lives. Just as how lighthouses save and prevent ships from crashing into the harbour rocks, we too can save and lead people to the safety and comfort of Jesus Christ.

It is my prayer that when others see us, they may see Christ in us and also, how the stories in our lives may cause them to experience Jesus in a personal and special way. May we all be more like lighthouses than undercover Christians!

On November 16, 2014, visitors of our church for the past 6 months, newly-baptized and confirmed members of our church were cordially invited to a luncheon held at Oldham Hall. This is the second ‘newcomers’ lunch conducted in 2014 for those who are new to get to know more people in church, meet with the church leadership – our pastors, members of the Local Church Executive Committee and ministry staff. It was also an opportunity for them to find out more about the various events and ministries in BRMC. We are grateful for the efforts of our Witness & Evangelism Ministry for organising this lunch. On Sundays, prayer ministry at the altar is available in the Sanctuary after worship services.

For those who need someone to pray for them, please use the left railings near the pulpit. The Pastors and Lay Ministry Staff are available to pray with all who come forward. Those who wish to pray by themselves should use the railings on the right.

During weekdays, the Sanctuary is open and available from 10am to 2pm for anyone who wants to be alone with God in prayer.
