“The Do’s and Don’t’s of DOAS” by David Lindsay
If designed and utilized correctly, a DOAS, or Designated Outdoor Air System, can provide a multitude of benefits innew construction or retrofit applications. Due to the extreme climate in Hawaii, some special considerations must bemade in order to maximize these benefits. You are invited to join us as we discuss the proper implementation of Ha-waii DOAS for optimal performance and sustainability.

About the Panelists
Automatic control systems are widely used in the HAVC industry. As design consultants, contractors, equipmentsuppliers, we all need to deal with it on a daily basis. Controls can sometimes be mysterious, and understandingtheir application in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems is important for ensuring proper operation ofequipment, as well as to save energy for clients. Towards that end, ASHRAE Hawaii chapter assembled a panel ofcontrol experts in our local industry for the upcoming October monthly meeting to unravel the mystery of controlsystems, as well as discuss changes and advances made in the controls industry in recent years and update us aboutthe future direction of the industry. Therefore, please join us in our upcoming monthly meeting to hear and learnfrom the best control experts of our local industry!

Research Promotion
The Research and Promotion CommiĴee manages and supports both the Society-level fundraising and Chapter-levelfundraising of the RP Campaign. Traditionally supporting just research, the RP Campaign was expanded 10 years agoto include support of Education & ALI, Endowed Research through ASHRAE Foundation, YEA programs, ASHRAEScholarships, and the General/Unrestricted Fund. Research, the backbone of ASHRAE, remains the primary fund ofthe program with over $2 million raised for this program annually.
A strong endowment is a solid indicator of an organization's financial heath and ensures stable, long-term support forprogram, student and initiatives in perpetuity.
Join ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter in reimagining the future of education in Ha-waii.
The ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter - Kokua Scholarship, once fully funded, will provide a yearly $1,500 scholarship to Hawaii students interested in theHVAC industry. Please consider earmarking your donation to this worthycause. You can donate now by visiting www.ashrae.org/make-a-gift.

I am honored and feel privileged to serve as your membership promotion commi ee chairman for this year. I tookover for Lori Arakawa last year when she moved to the mainland due to a job promotion. I am glad to get a secondchance to do a be er job this year and with a be er understanding of what needs to be done.
Goals for Membership promotion this year:
1. Get new members – We would like to get an overall increase of at least 5 members. Last year we had an incredi-ble amount of new members (27), but we also had 37 members that did not renew (about 17 of them were formerstudent members).
2. Retain existing members – As mentioned, we need to help our members make sure they renew with a special em-phasis on the 2nd and 3rd year members.
3. Advance existing members – There are four grades of membership: Student, Affiliate, Associate, and Full mem-bers.
· Affiliate grade is to help transition young graduates with a reduced cost for 3 years, but this membershiplasts only for 3 years – person must be under 30 or discharged from military service within the last 5 years.
· Associate grade is the same annual cost as the membership grade but the person may not have the experi-ence, or education levels to meet the Full member criteria.
· Member grade - Members shall have the equivalent of 12 Society-approved years of experience composedof an approved combination of: (1) completed education beyond high school; (2) work experience; and (3)professional engineering or related registration or license issued by a legally authorized body.
Some of the ways we hope to achieve our goals:
1. Form a membership promotion commi ee – as I’ve learned, no one person can do it alone, we are all so busy and itis way easier to get people to take 1 or 2 tasks to focus on and do well than having 1 person try to do 10 things.
2. Have Membership Promotion nights in November and January, to help members as well as guests realize all thebenefits of being a member of ASHRAE.
3. Communicate with our new members welcoming them to ASHRAE HI, reminders to lapsed members, and wel-coming our chapter meeting guests that are non-members le ing them know how to become a member.
4. Communicating with members to encourage them to upgrade their membership.
